Re: UMA anyone?
Hi, The answer is no, at least as long as Openmoko's phones use the current TI Calypso modem. This is because UMA requires hacking in the GSM firmware itself. But the firmware has to be certified and will never be open source so that it can be modified. The only possibility would be to get a GSM firmware and hardware that support a way of hooking so that the appropriate software can be implemented in the modem. Also, UMA authentication requires running the GSM A3/A5/A8/cant-remember in the sim, and this facility is not provided by the AT sim commands in the modem. Outside the modem, it's only a matter of IKE and IPSec. (Yes, I did my master degree internship on UMA, and I investigated how to do it on Openmoko ;) ) SL ___ Openmoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

Re: FR adapter - shocking experience!
Just guessing, FR power supplies blocks are really high-tech ones if they contain a usb-powered 230V power inverter in the same package :-D to get 5VDC from 230VAC you need at least a transformer and a diode bridge + low voltage capacitors, or a step-down hasher like desktops/laptops power supplies. but, to get 230VAC from 5VDC, you will first need 5VAC with an oscillator, then a step-up transformer :) This is not something you'll find on a standard power supply plug :) Also, the shock would not be the same if you had been shocked with a normally operating 230v supply (I mean the amount of energy absorbed by your body) :) this is more likely to be a capacitor effect. There are some on the 230VAC side of all power supplies, to filter EMI. and a coil cannot store potential, it's a capacitor job :) a coil regulates spikes et reacts to transient voltages only. for DC current, a coil is a simple wire. sl 2008/10/9 Thorben Krueger [EMAIL PROTECTED] It might be a case of the transformator working in reverse: A small voltage applied to the usb output leads to a high voltage at the prongs. This could also be caused by a capacitator on the low voltage end, but I am not sure. Just guessing here. However, if you were to touch the prongs the moment they were out of the socket, the coil could still hold some potential to shock you. Also just guessing. Re: Input Method Development
(keeping [EMAIL PROTECTED] and communitylist in the loop) Hehe, This is totally understandable. :) We will explain to you the best as we can. If you want to make a korean keyboard with a key for each letter then you'll need a keyboard with... (sit down before next line) ... 11,172 letters, ie from \uAC00 to \uD7A3 + 24 single letters or jamos ! see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hangul http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hangul#Syllabic_blocks Of course there is a special method. The korean keyboard layout is a single qwerty, each key with a jamo (single letters). The 11172 syllabes are made of combined jamos , and a state machine can be used to track which keys have been pressed, and how they have to be combined. See my previous messages for an explanation. However when I searched the Internet for my use, I did not find a lot of information on this, so I did the research. About you soft keyboard, I think the problem can be solved with the use of plugins, ie a method that takes keystrokes and outputs characters. For European scripts, the routine will be quite trivial, but for other scripts, this is needed. With such plugins, we can also imagine support for other complex scripts such as chinese or indian or whatever. An input method will then be made of an XML file describing the layout, and a .so to hold the key-character translation algorithm. Sebastien 2008/2/7, Jeremiah Flerchinger [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Please forgive me for not putting much thought into the problem before. I'm really only familiar with European languages none of this work is in my area of expertise. I have started some reading on IME and other input methods. I'll have to think about the issue and what extensions would eventually need to be made. Jeremiah Flerchinger wrote: The idea behind what I started is that you can make a soft keyboard with any number of rows keys. Each key could be assigned any arbitrary utf-8 value. If more symbols are needed a file can be created describing another keyboard layout with additional keys. Maybe it's impractical to have a key for each character place them all into different keyboard layouts. Any insight to the problem and how keyboards are typically used/configured in Korea would be appreciated. Even though I would be unable to do localization, I could try to rethink the current design to further meet international needs. Sébastien Lorquet wrote: Hi, nicely done, this program is complementary with what I did! But a Korean IME engine will require additions to your program, it's not only a matter of xml layout. Maybe a plugin system that receives key presses and emits characters. Basically it's a state machine that will read latin letters and output korean letters according to combinations. I have a small keypress stack and a ~60KB next states file. for example, you type b a and you get a ba syllabe as a single Unicode character. Not to mention we will need to add a korean font in the neo. I'm happy with this project. I'm OK to help, if needed. Re: Input Method Development
for what I recall, backspace starts by removing *letters* from the last syllable, then entire syllabes. Moreover, hitting a directional key like LEFT RIGHT or any key that changes the caret position terminates composition of the current syllabe. In fact, when you type, the currently composed syllabe appears in blinking inverted video, and a SPACE or the end of possible composition (ie, no more letters can be combined into a valid syllabe) terminates the sequence. At this point, the real syllabe is displayed normally as a unicode character and composition starts again. I noticed that in some editors where this blinking character cannot appear (e.g. in a cmd.exe console), the current combination is displayed in the corner of the current window in a small frame. Writing a complete spec is a good idea ;) seb ___ OpenMoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community

I'm not sure a magnetic sensor is useful when you have a GPS, because a GPS can give you a heading as soon as the measured velocity is not zero! Re: SIM Card Copy
I don't even understand how it's possible to register to the network with a different Ki! 2007/11/29, KISS Attila [EMAIL PROTECTED]: AFAIK, the duplicate SIM cards are not equivalent cards. They have different IMSI and different Ki code. Only the network's configuration bind them to the same phone number. Theoretically you could have a dozen of them, but usually only one is allowed to receive the calls. This should clarify the questions regarding chances of hacking the Ki code by obtaining multiple cards to have more chances before lockout. (Those limits are so low on som SIMs, that they died after 2-3 years in hands some of daily traveling business mans:-) ) It also explains that the operator will always be able to trace every single SIM card by IMSI, if they want. So, don't be too happy with second SIM cards. They really help you only when you have a second outdoor phone and don't like to swap the SIM every time you go to mountains.. Atlasz SIM cards are smartcards. They can not be copied by design! The only way to duplicate a SIM is to hack it. No idea if and how far that is possible. But it is certainly not legal. Ask your provider for a duplicate SIM. Many providers will give you multiple identical SIM if you need them. Normally (if all is OK), I'm seeding this one (it's vmware server downloaded from their site) I tested bittorrent-curses under linux, but it didn't work because this is not a gzipped file. i need to understand this problem clearly. When resolved, I will be able to seed 24/7. This is a good experience for me, I'm learning how to run a tracker... useful and educative at the same time ! OpenMoko future.
(This is a suite to laforge's message on gsmd-devel) hello, I'm a little disappointed about laforge's message :( Targetting geeks only will never help to make OpenMoko known. Even if our resources are limited, I think we should interest other firms in opensource, to show them the benefits of such technologies. Of course we can't compete with big phone makers, but there is no reason to be afraid of that. Why no distribution deals with carriers? Why not targetting the normal phone market, even if it's a long term goal? Setting such goals will help to motivate developers, It's far more challenging that only for openwrt guys. One important point is reputation. If openmoko is known to be a geek phone no one else will get interested in it. Others developers will comment by themselves. -- Sébastien LORQUET - 이세영 (李世榮) Ingénieur ENSPG 2006 / ENSIMAG-ASI 2007 ___ OpenMoko community mailing list community@lists.openmoko.org http://lists.openmoko.org/mailman/listinfo/community
