I don't really see the point in having a yet another
distribution. Just take an existing distribution and configure it to
fit this task. Optionally contribute back some new packages.

Configuring a system for GPS-only use is an interesting challenge.

 1) The filesystem probably should be read-only so that you can turn
the power off at any time, right?

Set it up so you suspend it, instead of turning off. Unsuspend
is much faster than boot.

I wonder: For such a simple setup, could unsuspend be used
instead of booting? I.e. if you lost power, you unsuspend into some
saved image, instead of waiting for a cold boot.

 2) The only volatile part of the filesystem would then be the gps
 tracks?

To be completely power-proof, use a synchronously mounted sdcard. Slow
fs, but gps logging is low volume anyway.

The state of hardware will be lost, it's not so easy.

Maybe something like LVM snapshots could guarantee an atomic way to
update files on the disk?

I second OpenWRT. The image available for Freerunner is very light and fast
(didn't clock it, but perhaps just over half a minute for booting?).

It is usable as phone since it's so responsive (it wakes up before the caller
loses patience and hangs up). It leaves more than enough resources for
(Tango)GPS.

Only two things I have a problem with, are lack of capital letters (!) and GPRS
in the default image (or anyway, I couldn't figure those out).

Give it a try!

Thanks for this hint to openWRT. But i have problems to get a connection over
wifi to the internet. I did read the wiki
(http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/OpenWrt#Usage) but still get the message of
ping:

PING 88.198.93.221 (88.198.93.221) 56 data bytes
ping: sendto: Network is unreachable

How can I solve this?

I intended to give a hand, but I can't find the uSD with OpenWRT anymore to try
it out. I downloaded and flashed anew, but now I do not even manage to get a
connection to my Freerunner :-(

Perhaps my problem at the moment is similar to yours but the other way around;
my network here is in the 192.168.1.x range, and I might have addedd incorrect
routes to 192.168.1.1 that the Freerunner occupies now.

As suggested in another reply, what does ip route say?

Yes of course, you are right, maybe there is no need for a new distro, a
modification of a existing one can work. But when we come to your mentioned
read-only filesystem, then I dont't know if it is possible only by
configuring? And what is with all the drivers for wifi, USB, GSM and so on

Ok, my first test would be to take an existing distro and remove all

What would be a good starting distro? I would take SHR, but maybe another

 Greetings, Carsten
maybe use SHR as distro or derive from it and make a custom and new
image.

Denis.

Surely it is possible to configure.

There are no drivers for GSM in kernel. Is it a problem if there are
drivers for wifi and usb? Surely it should not cause any problems if
you just don't use them?

No, take an existing distro and only install the packages you
need. There's no need to install some packages and then remove them
again, right?

Maybe:
*take SHR or derives from it in openembedded,
*create a new lighter image.

Freerunner - small and fast distribution only for GPS

2010-08-27 Thread Carsten Gerlach
Hello,

does someone know a small distribution which is only made for GPS usage? For
outdoor holydays it would be nice to have such a distro. There is no need for
using the GSM, blootooth, wifi, acceleration sensor and so on. It should only
be fast at booting and should have a small energy consumption. For the
application I'm thinking of something like tangogps. It should be able to show
the position on a map and log a track.

Ok, if there is not such a distro, would it possible to build it? My
programming skills are very small for this topic so I don't know where to
start. A little help from you would be nice. :-)

Thanks for reading and for any hint to the right direction. :-)

Greetings, Carsten

I haven't really looked at it, but perhaps the OpenTom project has
something to offer that could be easily adapted to the FreeRunner
in the case that you don't come across anything else:

http://www.opentom.org/

They're mainly focused on documenting how to get a Linux OS other than
the stock TomTom firmware installed onto TomTom hardware, but maybe
there is some subset of that community that's interested in
using their GPS units as a GPS units, too. :)
