Well, not all GPS devices are equal.. and there's always going to be a
device better at XYZ if the device specialises in a particular
technology.. but the power to extract more meaning from less accurate
data is preferrable to having more accurate data which is harder to
apply context to.

E.g. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/London

'Tagging' street names is slower than extracting the data.. but how
quicker would it be if one could in 'map my route' mode, hit a button,
speak the name of the street.. or a geographical feature, which is
recorded relative to the GPS timestamps?

I have a bit of experience in GIS data and applications. Okay, a lot.

Sean is absolutely right about the rarity and high price of street maps,
not to mention the legal rights problems which can drag in Queens and
Kings.

The first question to answer is: what is the necessary accuracy?
If you're not routing ambulances then there may be adequate data
available from public sources. Availability varies tremendously by
country, even by internal divisions, but streets are always changing,
hence more difficult to obtain.

If street level geocoding is needed, one approach would be to take
advantage of Google or Yahoos geocoding APIs. Would work for a limited
(but large) number of hits/day, and for a non-commercial application.

For basic context like major roads, landmarks, postal code or political
boundaries, data may well be available for free or the cost of bashing
them into a useful shape. These data also have the advantage of smaller
file sizes.

Hope this helps.

Mapping data is actually really difficult. There are only two providers
worldwide:

* Navitec
* TeleAtlas

And they are really expensive. We have some commercial software lined up
that we could sell, but I'm not too excited at anything at this point.
Hopefully we can come up with something free together.

I think it is much more interesting, at least at this stage, to add the
possibility to upload personal data. This should be feasible with
"almost standard" freeGIS tools, and would add a wealth of applications,
both for fun and for professional work.

Exactly - the application Google Earth gobbles 3D graphics resources
like mad. (3d chipset, cpu, math) Does beautiful things with them, and
I'd love to have a handheld zoomable satellite-imagery globe, but unless
rendering is offloaded to a server somewhere (and I suspect Google would
have to do that) I don't see it running too well.

Don't get me wrong, I'd buy a Neo just to have handheld linux wireless
GoogleEarth with GPS. But apart from the resource requirements (both in
horsepower and bandwidth) there's also serious UI concerns that would
need to be addressed. A gesture-oriented interface is a great match for
Google Earth, but a 2.8" 640x480 screen is far from optimal... Pared
down to view-only with gesture controls, and pop-up menus and toolbars
for things like waypoints and searches, it could work. But it would
require significant effort from some coders at Google/Keyhole to make it
happen. (the idea of GoogleEarth travel/directions animations synced
with GPS data is exciting)

Now Google Maps is just web-access. Needs Javascript and Java, IIRC,
with a modern browser, so you can drag and zoom and what-not. I've
crafted links in a wireless tower monitoring program that pulls the GPS
data from the radio and opens a browser window looking at satellite pics
of the tower vicinity via Google Maps.

I've been lurking' since I found out about the OpenMoko effort/product, but
this looks like a good time to chime in.

The GPS applications, especially in combination with phone functionality, seem
like a great differentiator. Could end up redefining the answer to "What is a
cell phone besides 'just' a cell phone?" The answers have so far mostly
included (a) a PDA and (b) a music player... this would be a new entry in the
race.

I'm at PayPal (one of the eBay properties, along with Skype), and have a good
friend who is well-placed in the Google Earth division. (Note that Google Earth
and Google Maps are quite different, BTW.) Said friend is on holiday at
present, but I'll forward him this thread and relevant links, and we can see
where that goes. (I also hope to join the development effort- VoIP and embedded
experience from time at Avaya- but need to gauge my available time carefully
before committing.)

More news if/when I have any...

Unfortunately it seems we cannot.
Google maps API's terms of service allow you to use it in a website and not in
a
standalone non-Web application (FAQ clearly says that)
And Google Earth requires the client to be installed on the machine that you

So both ways are not valid :(

The only doable thing I can think now is a client to compile information
