--Blackberry Update Found to Contain Spyware
 (July 14, 2009)
A United Arab Emirates service provider pushed out a BlackBerry update
that contains spyware capable of intercepting users email and text
messages and sending them back to the server. The
performance-enhancement patch was sent as a WAP Push message to 100,000
users. Its spyware capabilities were discovered only after one user took
a closer look at the update because it appeared to be draining the
devices battery. The battery was being drained because the application
was trying to register with a central server that became overwhelmed
with the traffic, so the devices repeatedly tried to make contact.

touchpad on OM

2009-07-20 Thread Michal Brzozowski
Hi,

I'm not sure if anyone has ever tried this. I thought it would be handy to
have a mouse pointer on the phone, driven by a touchpad area in the lower
part of the screen. To click you just hit an appropriate button. This way
you can do left click, right click, and any other mouse buttons you want. It
should be useful for apps unsuited for finger use.

Here's a graphical explanation:
http://pvtrace.com/moko-touchpad.png

I've implemented this as part of literki. The touchpad area is of course
transparent, and the pointer is just a little x-shaped window. The pointer
is a bit shaky, because of noise coming from the finger input. It's also a
bit slow on some windows, vala-terminal in particular. I'm not sure if it's
possible at all to use a real mouse pointer for this.

If you want to experiment, install this package

Great job, Michal!

Literki is the best keyboard I've used on my FR.

Thank You, and keep it up!

2009/7/19 Michal Brzozowski ruso...@poczta.fm

 Hi community,

This is a new version of your favorite keyboard.

This update is concentrated on using libfreetype for fonts, and this means
 2 things:
 - it supports unicode input (at least I hope so, I tried it only with
 Polish letters :-))
 - it looks much nicer
 - the keys are much more visible when transparent, and thus I left
 transparency always on
 - you can change the font and size

The mechanism for showing/hiding the keyboard has also changed.

To pop up the keyboard: slide your finger upwards from the bottom right
 corner.
To hide the keyboard: slide your finger down on the keyboard.

You can configure what distance you need to slide. If you just click the
bottom right corner, the click goes through to the application, so it
(almost) doesn't affect using other applications when the keyboard is
 hidden.

 Here's the package:

 Here's a literki.conf explanation (I will update it shortly):

Yes, I use the XTest extension to do the clicks. The problem is that when
you're touching the touchpad, that's where the pointer will normally be
moved, and I don't think X supports two pointers to have at two different
places. That's why I have to draw a fake pointer.

When you click the L or R buttons, the pointer is now free and I can
move it to the location of the fake pointer to simulate the click.

 Hi community,

This is a new version of your favorite keyboard.

This update is concentrated on using libfreetype for fonts, and this
 means

If you just click the
bottom right corner, the click goes through to the application, so it
(almost) doesn't affect using other applications when the keyboard is
 hidden.

 Here's the package:
 http://pvtrace.com/literki_0.0.2-r3_armv4t.ipk

 Here's a literki.conf explanation (I will update it shortly):
 http://pvtrace.com/literki_conf.html

 Here's a recent screenshot:

 Have fun,
 Michal

[FSO] Paroli/frameworkd version?

2009-07-20 Thread Evgeniy Karyakin
Hello list!

like to know which version of Paroli and FSO framework I have inside.
The reason for this interest is to determine who's responsible for
this bug: http://www.paroli-project.org/trac/ticket/198 -- first
thought was Paroli is too recent (or frameworkd is too outdated) to
match with this method, but according to git.freesmartphone.org it was
there from the very beginning.

Hi,

Im wondering why that many dependencies are required.

Well, OM2009 doesn't yet have mplayer in the feeds.
Even if it did, the one normally in the feeds is generally the one linked
against floating point libvorbis. Using the version linked against
libivorbis (which uses integer based decoding) reduces CPU usage by about
50%. Hence the recommendation to use the one so graciously provided by
PaulTT. Ideally, one day when people have time to contribute a patch/.bb
file, mplayer from the feeds will be linked against tremor/libivorbis.

Laszlo KREKACS wrote:

Can you kindly let me know the steps to duplicate the crash so I can fix
it? There was one happening if you were in album art view and selected
another plalylist. That's been fixed.

Laszlo KREKACS wrote:

Oh, I almost forgot: why the volume is going only between 70% and 100%?

:-) Well, I thought the volume below 70% was almost inaudible. Using the
pause button to mute saves me space neede for another button.

Davide wrote:

Well, I couldn't find anything wrong. The thing is that when I tried
creating a similar file structure on an ext3 filesystem - I had problems
with permissions and links. Though once those were sorted out - the scan
worked fine. Can you recheck the permissions? Also, I've managed to delete
the file you sent me (with the output of ls -R). Can you resend it? Thanks.

In OE mplayer there was

Specifying the category in .desktop only causes illume to launch the

in the code, and for me, using only xlib in literki, sounds too complicated

Specifying the category in .desktop only causes illume to launch the

in the code, and for me, using only xlib in literki, sounds too complicated
atm to bother. I'm planning to set up an Icewm environment soon anyway, as I
 don't like Illume.

If there's a volunteer to integrate literki and illume, I'll gladly accept a

I don't think matchbox-keyboard, openmoko-keyboard, gridpad, Qtopia

Nope, it occured only once, cant reproduce it.

Improvement ideas:
- Implement delete song
- Please use equal width buttons
- Implement the same sliding what paroli has. So in a list, you can slide
left or right, and additional options appears (like delete, rename), and
even it could change the Album name/Artist name/song title field.

I find realy nice in paroli how is it implemented. Please steal the
nice ideas.;)

In paroli, all list elements are an .edc group. (so in your case:
[icon]Song title).
After it should be simple to create some animations and actions on the item.

They have a learning tool for it. It is implemented in flash. It

There are many applications of it, not just the above one. (but it is

So the requirements is just a bit more than for the lyrics.
Not a text but an image is shown at a given time.

Compatibility with dual sim tool

2009-07-20 Thread emanuele carrea
Hi guys, just lost my phone and it's the best occasion for buying a
FreeRunner!

As I'd like to use it for both work and home number, I'd like to know if it
might work with this dual-sim tool:

http://www.simore.ch/en/index.php

They have two options: a version with sim card cutting and a version that
allow not to cut it. I'd prefer the second one, for being the second sim
card belonging to the office.
Mainly I think it's a space problem, but I really know a few about the free
runner sw compatibility and the space inside.

Forgot to mention that I'd have no problem to use it with OpenMoko and
Android, for if they have different compatibility.

I really hope to have an answer as it would give a definitive solution to my
phone problems!.

Thanks a lot.

It doesn't really use two SIMs at the same time, does it? If I understand
correctly, you need some software to alternate between one and the other.

If that is so, and if the interface for the adaptor is undocumented, it
is likely it won't ever work.

Re: Compatibility with dual sim tool

2009-07-20 Thread emanuele carrea
Actually thei claim you can use both or choose which one to use, it probably
emulates one sim, comprehensive of the two you put inside.

They say it's compatible with smartpgones and pdas.
here is a brief description.
http://www.simore.ch/en/technology.php

For what I can get from the site, but it's my interpretation, in thus
unified sim they create some additional services, like the ones you get from
the telephony providers, for managing the two sims.

On the faqs I found this one that is quite discouraging:

*May I receive phone calls on both numbers at the same time?*

Mobile Phone are composed by only 1 receptor and 1 transmitter. So they can
not connect simultaneously 2 SIM card on 2 different networks.
Nevertheless you can activate the auto switch function allowing you to
settle you switch sequence with a high flexibility.
That way, you are rapidly notified of a missing call.
Example:
1 hour 35 minutes on SIM 1 and 5 minutes on SIM 2.

Thus it's just a card switcher...It seemd strange it could connect to twp
different networks.

Anyway still it's an interesting tool.

If you are having problems with the audio quality, I'd suggest you get a
buzz fix as soon as possible. Until then, I'd suggest you tweak the alsa
config file to see if you can get something usable - my process was to set
my laptop next to a landline - run alsamixer via ssh, and then dial the
landline from my FR. I then basically experiemented with the controls

I got something relatively buzz-free that still let me hear the other

Using glamo acceleration can be faster than Xv or slower than Xv. It
all depends of file, which you are trying to open. We have quite glamo

Re: Intone 0.60 Almost Stable ;-)

2009-07-20 Thread c_c

Hi,
I'm uploading a binary for SHR-Unstable that will print out key press
scan codes if run from a terminal. Just replace the intone binary in
/usr/bin/ with the attached file.
This is for people with bluetooth headsets - so that I get an idea what
the AVSCR scancodes are like.
BTW - this binary also incorporates fixes for reported bugs (except the
scanning bug which I still haven't found the reason for) and 'equal sized
buttons'. So people who *desperately* need to edit their playlists can us
this straight away.
I'll package this once the AVSCR functionality is working fine - which
should be soon ;-)

Note: for some reason, my headset likes to send play/pause twice (I assume
it's my headset, could be bluez, IDK) which confuses things. I'd appreciate
it if you would ignore a second play/pause press if it comes less than a
second after the first one, but that's purely up to you.

I've implemented this as part of literki. The touchpad area is of
course transparent, and the pointer is just a little x-shaped window.
The pointer is a bit shaky, because of noise coming from the finger
input. It's also a bit slow on some windows, vala-terminal in
particular. I'm not sure if it's possible at all to use a real mouse
pointer for this.

Everything works as expected, but my play/pause still likes to send two
events most of the time, and therefore the music pauses for a moment then
resumes. This means Intone is doing everything correctly, but it makes it
somewhat pointless for me. :P

The only thing you need to do is `modprobe uinput`, after that the AVRCP
commands will work. Intone can do that when you turn on bluetooth.

Re: New Open Hardware company

For the first device we wanted to be 100% sure that we had fully
functioning hardware, so we left the ID alone, and just focused on a good
keyboard layout ( given the keys we had)
and getting linux to boot. If we start with that solid base and have a
good engineering process
then improving the device over time becomes a lot easier.

Check time when you get an event, and if it's within 1 second of the last

do it anyways.

First problem: I tend to lock the screen when intone is running so nothing
presses the screen and messes things up, but AVRCP events don't come through
a locked screen. Does anyone know a way to catch those keypresses?
