.29 has issues but those in kernel are workaroundable. Those in
firmware are independent from the kernel and are unlikely to be ever
solved. Luckily they don't affect the majority of users.

Please try wpa_supplicant method as described on FSO_Resources
wikipage and report the results.

I don't have any problems connecting with mofi.
Sure after, connecting I do wmiconfig -i eth0 --power maxperf and then keep a

running just to know if the connection is alive, but mofi establishes the wifi
connection and then it works.

With connman+mokonnect I have had ZERO success, so if it works for someone,

Qi installed properly?

2009-08-11 Thread Niels Heyvaert

Hi,

I downloaded the latest testing Qi version (not the unstable or experimental
one) from

http://downloads.openmoko.org/distro/testing/NeoFreerunner/qi-s3c2442-1.0.2+gitr3b8513d8b3d9615ebda605de4bda18371aa3f359.udfu

and afterwards flashed the Neo FR using

dfu-util -a u-boot -R -D
qi-s3c2442-1.0.2+gitr3b8513d8b3d9615ebda605de4bda18371aa3f359.udfu

Which ends with status 0, no error conditions - Done!

Sounds great.

Holding the AUX button and powering up the FR, the NOR boot menu tells me I'm
using

U-Boot 1.3.2-moko12 (May 9 2008 - 10:28:48)

Is this correct? Shouldn't this say it's Qi?

The reason I'm asking is that whenever I boot the FR (using either simple power
up, or choosing boot from the NOR menu) the FR is booting from NAND instead
of booting from the ext2 SD Card.

The boot sequence of the Qi is first to look for the SD partition for a
bootable uImage before turning to NAND.

So is my FR still using with u-boot?

Thanks,

Niels.

RE: Qi installed properly?

2009-08-11 Thread Niels Heyvaert

So this means when I boot by just pressing the power button I should be
booting with Qi. But whenever pressing the AUX button and boot from the
NOR menu I'm booting with u-boot... Is that correct?

basically yes (iirc you can frinst press aux when booting qi to skip a
 partition).
nor is your fallback, in case you corrupt nand beyond booting.

OK since we've now established this, I come to my next point:

I've created one large ext2 partition and untarred
http://build.shr-project.org/shr-unstable/images/om-gta02/full-om-gta02.tar.gz
to it.

I've created the partition using using fdisk (primary partition and flagged as
bootable) and mkfs.ext2.

After inserting the card in my FR, he still boots from NAND instead of the SD
card. Understanding the Qi bootsequence the FR is first trying to boot from the
SD card. But for some reason it is not or it is failing and skips to the NAND
part.

Could this be a permission issue on the SD card (ie not able to mount or read
files)?

I had to use sudo all the time when using fdisk or mkfs, including when
untarring. To try to avoid permission issues I've done chmod -R 777 * on the SD
card root before inserting into the FR. But this does not change the behaviour.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Niels.

there are some feedbacks (flashing led and vibration iirc), signifying the
result of the checked partition (boot or skip).
when booted from flash, can you access the sd card? maybe it is not
detected properly?

Could this be a permission issue on the SD card (ie not able to mount or

no idea. but i don't think so.
btw: with
sudo su -
you can get a root shell in ubuntu which removes the need to prepend
everything with sudo and would have saved you from chmod.

- i am not quite sure how much information qi would print at all, but
maybe you should increase the loglevel?
- if available you should compare the md5sum of the archive or download it
again with another tool (wget) and compare both.
- you could in /boot remove the link
uImage-GTA02.bin
and instead _copy_
uImage-2.6.29-rc3

Don't fear... It won't be damaged for only 1minute and in tap Water.
Salted water (sea) can damage it.
You only have to dry it the more you can, and then let it alone for a

Mikhail Umorin wrote:

Has it been damaged (did it retain its capacity and won't damage the FR)?

Well, surely a small amount of stored charge was lost due to current
flowing between the contacts, but it can't lose capacity from that,
since the battery contents are encapsulated very well. (If water
could manage to reach the lithium, it would go up in flames, so
lithium batteries themselves are pretty much watertight I think)

However the contacts can corrode, especially since there is voltage
on the contacts. And water could manage to get between the charge
counter / protection pcb and the lithium battery.

IMHO your safest bet would be to put the battery in an airtight bag
together with a desiccant which should remove any remaining moisture I think.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_desiccants
Maybe you got some silica gel packets somewhere? If the silica gel
has been exposed to air for some time, you can remove the absorbed
moisture by heating it in an oven and reuse the dried silica gel

   So, _why_ are Freerunners different?

One of the problems is that some freerunner revisions are in fact
different in hardware. Most devices have 1uF capacitors instead of
R3004/R3005 (which should be 0R), and that's not a joke. That is

0R's are placeholders for possible future modifications, right? Is the
1uF capacitor deliberately (but mistakenly) inserted or is this a
  manufacturing bug?

 The first :(

Hmmm... maybe the idea was to improve audio quality by inserting a
filter? Too bad it didn't work out that way...

Unfortunately, there's no way to find out which devices are affected
by this bug judging only by revision and serial number as BOMs were
lost due to an incorrect file format conversion, one needs to actually
  try and see for himself.

If I open up my phone (have to do it someday, right?) how can I
  distinguish a 0R from a 1uF?

Unlikely since those caps are under a can and dismounting it requires
extra effort and you can damage something doing it.

How many cans are there inside a freerunner? I'll have to study the
schematics and really have to open this thing.

AFAICT A7s are affected while at least some A6s (mine e.g.) not.

  Hmmm... that's bad.

Are there many differences like these?

I don't know of anything important except those fake 0Rs and that the
bass was a bit improved in A7 (from 1uF to 4.7uF). If you're really
 that interested, ask Joerg.

Maybe I will, yes. Would be nice to have an exhaustive list. Probably
this can also be found in the core project.

Yes. On resume, the CPU executes the reset handler, with the registers

information left there by the kernel on suspend. The boot loader performs
very basic setup of CPU and memory clocks, then checks these two registers

The WSOD problem on resume is a kernel problem. It should perform all the

delete them afterwards using PodCat. Furthermore, I can switch headset
and speaker audio profiles from within the player. I can also access any
directory on my device and listen to audio files there and they are
listen not by their filenames but my their ID3 tag content. Everything
can be done on one screen without menus.

Is there any VoIP/Skype software on SHR?

Is there any VoIP/Skype software on SHR?

If there is, a link will do :)

Well, I can tell you that there is no Skype software for FR. Skype is closed
source, and the protocol is closed as well, so no-one can compile it for ARM
processors and no-one can make a 3rd party client.

Aside from that, you can use whatever VOIP software you want, but you'll
probably have to build it for FR yourself.

Is there VoIP software avaliable for SHR, which doesn't need any
compile/install actions, simply opkg install voip software?

My wife washed one of my batteries with my trousers in the washing maschine
 and it still works excellent.

I left my FR on top of my outdoor reptile enclosure overnight while it
rained ... heavily. When I picked it up water literally poured out of it.

Except for a millimeter of unresponsive touchscreen and some corrosion
on the FR's battery contacts, it still operates fine :)

Salted water (sea) can damage it.

Yes it can, My FR got dropped into the sea and it's dead. It still turns
on an I get a bright-white screen as the WSOD, and the wierd thing, it
still gets the charged, but I can't do nothing. I get no 'nor' nor nand.

The good part, It happend two months ago and I just got a new one into
my office today, I'll picl it up tomorrow and I'll be happy again.

 Mikhail.

Thank you all for the suggestions and comments.

I dried my battery with a paper towel and let it sit on my desk for about 6
hours (no desiccant but I think it would be the best way to go). Phone booted
without any problems, except ophonekitd would not start, strange. Battery seem
to have the same charge as I remember. It started charging without any

What's a good website to get the required cap (and what cap, brand,

What you need is 0805 ceramic capacitor, 22uF, 6.3V (or more).

If you're in Moscow, i suggest buying here:

 http://chipdip.ru/product0/276924954.aspx

This was bought and used successfully by Q-Master.

Thank you for the info, Paul. Thanks also for the hint about digikey.com as

 Full Log is appended

 Any hints?

Well Ueli -- you are not alone. I think that error is pretty generic
and that you really have to look in this file --
/mnt/debian/var/log/bootstrap.log -- to see useful messges.

I am surprised that a standard piece of hardware with a completely
standard OM distro can't run this Debian installer script. It's also a
drag that I can't restart it once it's failed to try again -- well, I
can -- ./install.sh debian but it starts over again and that step
takes a long long time. Well it even says might take a while. :-)
That's true! Takes FOREVER actually since it never completes.

Today I tried flashing each of these to the phone to use as a starting point.

OM2009
OM2008.12
OM2008.9

backing off to an older distro each time figuring maybe THIS time it would work.
Same results every time

P: Configuring helper cdebootstrap-helper-apt
E: Internal error: install

Checking the log file in /mnt/debian/var/log/bootstrap.log I see this

 O: Failed to fetch bootstrap:/pool/main/t/texinfo/install
 info_4.13a.dfsg.1-4_armel.deb
 O: E:
O: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with
 --fix-missing?
 O:
 E: Internal error: install

This looks pretty bad -- missing archive -- It's a different error
than I got with OM2009 - which I did not note. Reading the wiki page
at http://wiki.debian.org/DebianOnFreeRunner I just figured OM2009 was
too new.

I wonder where it's going for the archive.
I wonder why it can't get there.

I googled for the error and found this

http://www.mail-archive.com/smartphones-userl...@linuxtogo.org/msg01501.html

Trying that now-- manually wget the deb file and put it in
/mnt/debian/var/cache/bootstrap/
Maybe this will help...

Well, I saw your site and realised that the English dump is 7 GB. I have a
8 GB card - but this would leave me with almost no space for anything else.
I wonder if there was a way of reducing the image sizes further by splitting
them into topics (maybe science / computers / physics etc).

Otherwise I'll just have to buy another 8GB card - but the card swapping is
a little cumbersome. What do you think?

I agree with c_c... The 7GiB dump is just too big. Is it compressed? I
assume it's just a text dump, and the images are already thrown out.
Otherwise it would probably be far larger than 7GiB.
