[CGUYS] CSI goes to Second Life
I guess you could call this one, computers go where no man--oops, I mean no avatar--has gone before: The October 24 episode of CSI New York takes place partly inside Second Life, where an investigator attempts to track down the fugitive avatar of a murder victim. After the show, viewers can go online to Second Life, get their own CSI kit, and try to solve the murder depicted in the show. They'll have plenty of time: the TV episode in which the murder is revealed will be broadcast in February. Think I'm joking? There's a story about this in the Arts section of Thursday's New York Times. [CGUYS] Home Server [Was: MacMini [Was: XP Gets Life Extension]
Microsoft Home Server is supposed to do that sort of backup. That is-was due out last month-real soon now- http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/whs_preview.asp A Mini would be too expensive for this. Prices for Linux-based home servers are incredibly low. OWC has the NASPerform Network Storage Solution with 500GB storage going for $210. I have been using the Linksys NSLU2 for a couple of years now. That sells for $60 (without disks). The Microsoft Home Server runs Windows Server 2003 which I don't think any sensible person would pick for trouble-free operation. However, the price looks to be competitive. LaCie promises a version for later this month with 500GB storage for $199. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] Acrobat .pdf file durability
I use Adobe InDesign. InDesign gives lots of choices for export, including prepress, crop marks, compressing images, embedding fonts [default], compatibility with earlier versions of Acrobat Reader. Only Postscript fonts can be embedded [? maybe]. A PDF/X file embeds lots of extra information for offset printing, but I don't know if that includes fonts. It's a choice in the OS X print dialog box. Yes, PDF/X includes the fonts and they don't have to be PostScript. Simplicity is the point of this standard. It is a complete ready-to-print package. It is a dumbed-down version of PDF that includes only the features that have been proved to be bullet proof. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? [CGUYS] Data Cables
I (physically)installed several hard drives in my computer yesterday but, now when I turn the computer on, the computer doesn't recognize my boot drive. I have configured my computer to boot from the CD-R/W drive since, I use the XP Pro disc to boot and, not the hard drive. I know power is going to all the connected drives(147GB U320, CD-R/W, floppy) but, even after checking to see if I put the cables on backwards, they still aren't recognized through the data cable. Re: [CGUYS] Data Cables
IDE is simple. If it is the only one make sure it is set as master. On the U160/U320 which are SCSI drives. You have them plugged into their adapters, and I assume they are both properly terminated? Once you make sure they are terminated, I am not sure how to make the BIOS recognize them but the old way to turn the drive ID to zero in the old BIOS. You also need to make sure you the proper drivers in the WinXp installation. Also note you must make sure the SCSI BIOS is booting and recognizing the drives. Make sure you have that set up properly. I have never set up XP with SCSI drives so I am not sure of what all needs to be done, but the settings in all of the BIOS's need to be set properly. Re: [CGUYS] Data Cables
OK I get it you need the CDROM to be recognized. Check the cable connection it may look connected but it may not be properly. Also check the power connections. Swap out power connections if possible. Also if after you check the cables and verify they are all properly seated and connected. Swap out with a new one. I know sounds too simple to be true but I have had cables that looked good but just failed. Also the cable may not be on all the way but look attached. Also make sure the BIOS sees it and registers it as a device. It should be the first master device. If all that fails it may have gone bad.
