Re: [CGUYS] boot G4 or Intel Mac from flash drive?

2007-10-15 Thread Tom Piwowar
Techtool Protoge is on a FireWire, not USB drive.
http://micromat.com/index.php?option=com_contenttask=viewid=34Itemid=49

That's right. I forgot that detail. Booting from FW has been built into
the hardware for many years. Booting from USB is newer, but works for
recent models (as previously noted). I would expect USB booting to be
less reliable just because I generally find USB to be less reliable, but
I have not tried it. I note that Apple's migration tool uses FW, not USB,
even though Macs all come with USB2 these days.

Haven't seen a tiny FW drive like that before. Can I get one without the
TT software?

They are rare, but if you google on firewire flash drive you will find
them. Reviews say they are no faster than USB2 flash drives and a bit
more expensive. Definitely a special-purpose only product.

Re: [CGUYS] [SPAM] Re: [CGUYS] Security Ignorance

2007-10-15 Thread Tom Piwowar
You sure about that John? eWeek seems to agree with me. Now, I won't argue
that running as a least privilege user will absolutely eliminate security
exploits...

You misapply the eWeek story. EWeek is comparing different settings of
the same insecure OS. No one here is proposing that some settings are
less dangerous than others. You don't make a good case for your position
by trying to change the topic.

The ease with which you can change these settings in Windows is prima
facie proof of insecurity. The reason you have to jump through hoops to
do this on a Mac is exactly because of the built-in security.

Also note that that Apple procedure is not actually changing the name on
an account. It is migrating the contents of an account to a new account
and then changing security settings of the files that were moved.

This does not really get you what you want. The 501 account has special
privileges when running as administrator. This new account will not have
those.

Since you can log in using the long name I don't know why you insist on
changing the short name. Why not just make all the long names the same
and be happy? This is an artificial crisis.

Re: [CGUYS] UPS Question

2007-10-15 Thread MrMike6by9
The more sophisticated units often have self-test circuitry even if
the unit is setup to be monitored by a connected computer; this may
relate to the 2-4 AM thing. The other issue might be a failing
battery. They do wear out. I have 2 TrippLite 1000VA units that have a
real time read-out for the line voltage. They were about $100 the last
time I saw one at Costco.

YMMV

I know UPS issues have been covered in the past. As many of you may know, I'm
an advocate of using them. Recently (within the past 2 weeks!) we have begun
 having UPS issues:

To wit: Sometimes, in the middle of the night (2 am - 4 am), two of our UPS's
begin to click / beep. Not sound an alarm, mind you, just to click / beep
quietly in a rhythmic pattern. I cannot find reference to what this might
 mean,
though I think it means that the circuit being used is browning out power
 and
the UPS is making up the missing power.

Last night this happened at about 11 pm!!!

Eventually, the UPS's (we have many, but only two are involved in this
situation) begin to blare. Then everything shuts down and they continue to
 blare
 until reset and recharged.

This is a very frustrating situation as it only affects two of our 4 UPS
units (all in the same room, but possibly on separate circuits). It is also
happening to a neighbor! Same scenario. Only our UPS's are far enough
 away that
they don't wake us. Hers, sadly, wakes her when it begins to scream. (Please
don't ask about the 2 am - 4 am thing. I sometimes work late into the
 night/morning.)

We can tell when this scenario has occurred because a telephone answering
machine ceases to work, and because my iMac is turned off. There are two UPS
units involved. One has only the telephone answering machine plugged into its
battery back-up sockets, and the other has only my iMac connected to its
 battery
back-up sockets. Dedicated UPS's if you will. It is unclear if these are on
 the
same circuit breaker or not. It's also weird that sometimes one of the UPS's
is affected, and sometimes both of them are affected at the same time.

I have searched for references to sounds made by APC UPS units without
success. These units are all relatively new (a higher capacity one was
 purchased
last week for my computer in the hope that would help resolve the problem
 with my
computer shutting down, but to no avail), and their batteries should be in
 good condition.

Any help / advice / would be appreciated.

[CGUYS] Details on Apple's Time Machine

2007-10-15 Thread Tom Piwowar
This is a long article and the first part is a history of backup
strategies (something not everyone will find interesting). However, after
that it goes into a lot of detail about Time Machine. This is a big
deal for Apple and they have invested a lot in making it work by making a
very interesting change to how its file system works. They have created a
new type of alias (shortcut) that keeps a file around as long as any one
of these new pointers exists and lets them stack up multiple instances of
the same file. This allows them to make many snapshots of your files
while automatically eliminating duplicates. Very interesting.

[CGUYS] UPS Update

2007-10-15 Thread Chrperson
My thanks to all the suggestions re. the UPS unit(s) that we have had
difficulty with. My husband got serious and did some internet searching re. APC
UPS
units and found some info about the Battery Back-UPS ES being problematic when
dealing with line fluctuation. We phoned APC today (sent them info by e-mail
and they actually sent back a phone # that actually reached a real tech support
department. Very impressive.) It turns out that they are replacing the unit I
bought 3 weeks ago as being defective. They are replacing the unit we bought
a couple of years ago (still under warranty) as being defective. They are
replacing the battery in a 3rd unit, also under warranty. I'll keep you posted
re. whether, or not, the replacements work any better than the current units.
