Mason Miller Before you add the songs/videos to your iTunes library, set the press to not have iTunes organize your library. Most (?all?) of the content is coming in through the use of CD's. I don't like the way the CD's were ripped on the PC so I'm redoing them all. Re: [CGUYS] Apple Will Not Provide Safari 2.0.2, or 2.0.3, or 2
Alvin Auerbach asked: I had Safari 2.0.4 installed on my iMac G5. I installed Safari 3 Beta over it. I liked it, but had some problems. I trashed it and went back to Safari 2.0 from my original install disks. Apple Software Update did not update Safari 2.0 to 2.0.4. That is right. Safari 2.0.4 is only available on the latest OS X.4 install DVD or via Software Update. If you run the OptionalInstalls.mpkg you will have it as an option. I think the issue is that certain versions of Safari depend on having certain versions of OS X. Software updater is supposed to handle this. If this is not working right try running Disk Utility first to verify/repair the drive and then repair permissions. Then update OS X if necessary and run Updater again to see if it gives you the Safari update. (Works for me.) jemmerling opined: Don't waste your time with Safari, it's a bad browser. I will spare you a diatribe on just how bad it is. No Safari is not a bad browser. It is different in some respects from somebody else's favorite browser, but that does not make it bad. Having a variety of browsers available is good (for a lot of reasons). * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? You can even have multiple iTunes libraries (for the multiple iPods you should own). Start iTunes with the option key depressed and you can switch iTunes libraries or create a new one. There is a lot of flexibility about what gets stored where, but I have not had a need to play with these features. Today I see the Apple Online Store is offering an external 500 GB USB2 drive for $140. Will anyone want for storage again? * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? Re: [CGUYS] Update OS X 10.3.9 to 10.5?
There are some neat new features and some worthwhile improvements to the standard Apple programs that would be useful, but I'm happy and comfortable doing things in ways that are becoming old fashioned I think (after the long discussions we have had here about backups) the best feature may turn out to be TimeMachine. The default setting takes hourly (yes, hourly) snapshots of your files. It keeps the hourly snapshots for today. TimeMachine then automatically thins out the snapshots to daily for this week and then to weekly for this month. It keeps monthly snapshots around as long as you want. I think this is going to make a big difference in file security. * == QUICK LIST-COMMAND REFERENCE - Put the following commands in == * == the body of an email send 'em to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] == * Join the list: SUBSCRIBE COMPUTERGUYS-L Your Name * Too much mail? [CGUYS] Leopard Party
I was near an Apple Store at 6 PM Friday so I decided to see what was up. As I rounded the corner at exactly 6 there were loud cheers as the store doors opened. There were about 300 people in line to enter the store. I was impressed by how calmly and effectively this mob was handled. I think most stores would panic at this sitation. The line moved quickly then stopped. I think this was to enforce a fire department limits on how many people are allowed in the store at once. After that a few people were let in every time a few people left the store. People were leaving at a good rate because the checkout was marvelously fast. It only took a few minutes for me to get into the store. Right at the door there were a half dozen Apple staff handing out Leopard T-shirts, acting like the most important thing at the moment was my getting the right size T-shirt. Despite the mob the store was functioning well. There were lots of smiling staff thanking us for coming and apologizing for the crush. I had no trouble getting the attention of one of the techs who gave me a 20 minute detailed demo of TimeMachine. He knew the new software well (you know I don't ask easy questions). He could not answer one question and he had no trouble telling me he did not know -- no bullshit. I asked questions about the X Server and he knew that too. He even gave me tips on saving money on the server.
That is a really nice and compelling feature. For some people this will be valuable. But for those of us who don't generate critical or important data or files all day, it's not enough to merit a purchase. I might feel different in a few months or if I started having trouble.
