[CGUYS] Google Voice

2009-03-12 Thread Chris Dunford
Word is that Google Voice (formerly GrandCentral) will be launching within a
couple of weeks. It looks very, very cool (and free for domestic use).

The idea is you have one phone number, which you pick, that you give out to
everyone (business AND personal). Using caller ID, it will ring any of your
phones based on rules that you set up online. Even if you change your real
numbers, the Google number stays the same (one number for all your phones,
for life). It can transcribe voice mail, record conversations, route text
messages to your cell, tell you who's calling before you decide to answer,
and provide custom per-caller greetings. It can block individual callers'
numbers, and it has a telephone spam filter that can identify and block
telemarketers based on community input. It can send voicemail notifications
via email, and you can listen to the voicemail from your computer. Pretty
nifty stuff.

Like so many other new things (Twitter, Facebook), I'm going to have
to be convinced. I already have a single phone number. Can this thing
automagically ring a cell phone if you're in the car, the home phone
when at home, and the work phone when at work?

Sounds like it would have been more useful 5 years ago.

The site doesn't have all the details yet, but it does appear that you can
have it ring wherever you want. I assume that you would need to tell it
where you are going to be, so I don't know if that qualifies as
automagically.

Or perhaps there is a schedule. I don't know.

I* will look those o0ver and it is indeed old news.

Our list is a private list. All aspects of the list are classified
as private. I am one of the owners listed with the list.

We original were hosted by a company (I cant remember the name) but
eventually got bought out and bought out so it is a Yahoo group.

In the rules of the community, we do state that all correspondence
are to be considered private and that they need permission of the
poster to disseminate.

It is unfortunate that in some circles this is not considered enough
prohibition to stop someone from doing this.

In Church circles they very often confuse religiosity with
superiority to civil laws.

A policy like that has to be difficult to enforce. Haven't you had

We maintain an exclusive right to publish, which means: Don't expect

could dig it away from the search bots anyway.

Attached media is still the property of the author, and they retain

[CGUYS] Ergonomic keyboard: what actually happened

2009-03-12 Thread Constance Warner
Many thanks to everyone who posted with advice on where to get an
ergonomic keyboard that I could use with a broken left arm.

I bought a flexible keyboard from Microcenter for around $20.
Unfortunately, it turned out that casts and splints are far more
restrictive and painful than I had anticipated. I'm now in a
removable splint and doing physical therapy, and I'll post a report
when I finally get to use the spiffy new flexible keyboard. (For
now, though, I'm still typing with one hand.)

I had a lot of time to think, though. I thought about the roughly 50
million Americans who don't have any medical insurance--and if you've
looked at the cost of insurance lately, you know pretty much why.
Can't we, as a country, do better than this? FYI, a simple broken
arm will cost you $10,000 to $20,000. How many people of modest
means can take that big a sudden hit, especially in this economy?
Fortunately, I did have some insurance--I'm one of the lucky ones.
For now, that is

I also thought about the frequently made assertion that people who
are covered by insurance overuse medical care, choosing the most
expensive treatments; and seeing doctors when Grandma's home
remedies--and a day or two of bed-rest--would be just as good. If
people were forced to look at the price tag of their medical care,
and pay more of the actual cost, they would choose more economical
options, and the rising costs of medical care could be controlled.

Oh, really? When you break an arm, you don't have time to shop
around. Your only choice is what emergency room you go to; after
they patch you up, they refer you to an orthopedic practice for
immediate follow-up (like, putting the actual cast on your arm, which
needs to be done within hours of the initial break). You really
don't have the leisure to do a lengthy survey of all the doctors in
your area, comparing evaluations (when you can get them) and prices
(which usually aren't available anyway). And the stakes are high; in
my case, I really need two working hands for any job I could possibly
get, with my qualifications. If something went wrong because I
shopped around and chose cheaper but second-rate medical care, I
could be stuck with a crippled hand and permanent unemployment.

I'm just using my broken arm as an example. But there are many
medical situations that are comparable; in fact, many are much, MUCH
worse. It's something to think about

Re: [CGUYS] Relinquishing copyright on Wikipedia photo

2009-03-12 Thread chad evans wyatt
I concur with Betty's passion.  But doing what is right often isn't even
perceived.  My parents were musicians.  Friends have offered ripped music
gratis, I always refused, to their disbelief.  Unfortunately, the
internet has brought piracy that is not worth litigating.  One of my photos was
used in a sweater ad in the Czech
Republic, with neither compensation nor attribution.  Everyone knows
Kafka, right? The Czech courts are very much in that stream.  Another image
was taken by a small French company to advertise sorbet.  Again,
unfruitful to go after them.

Many are the reasons, but we live in an
era of theft on a universal scale.  90% of the software in CZ on
private and business computers is pirated.  I remember this when
throwing cinderblocks at Adobe, who now compete successfully with other
onerous software providers.  They often have a point.  But that's small
potatoes compared to commercial and government intrusion.  Against that scale,
my individual images are important only to me.

My attitude in this is to continue creating ideas I assume will be harvested
eventually - often swiftly - by the unimaginative unwashed.  It's so easy.

I applaud David for asking.

The first thing I considered was the USB ports. The one in the front
wasn't working. I couldn't find a USB driver in the System. I think the
one for 10.5 is IOUSBfamily.kext, but I can't download it without
subscription to Apple's developer site. Found a general open source link
for USB drivers. I can get into the site using my general Apple login
[same as for iTunes], but don't know what to do with the files yet.
ReadMe says they need to be updated--well, so does the Mac.

http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/10.5.6/IOUSBFamily-327.4.0/

The keyboard is plugged into the back and works OK. System Profiler sees
the printers but can't print. I figured they disabled those ports for
USB2, so I did an archive and install for 10.5 and 10.5.6. The front
port now works with my flash drive, but it may be set up that way. The
tech uses a 16 GB flash drive to boot from when he does troubleshooting.
If I wipe the drive and reinstall the system that might work. I also
have a USB2 PCI card to install. I hope the USB is disabled with
software and not hardware. Maybe I'll just wipe the drive and start over
to exorcise the bank's network settings.

Annoying as it is, I'm glad the bank has good security--just not on my Mac.

someone answers at work, will we have a 3-way conversation? I wonder
what it will be like at the office with everyone's private calls
ringing the phones???

Actually, there is a story on Market Place tonight. Apparently (in answer to
Tony's question), *all* your phones will ring at once. You should be able to
 read/hear it at www.marketplace.org.

Maybe I'll just wipe the drive and start over to exorcise the bank's network
settings.

That would be a good thing to do. In your situation archive and install
may be insufficient.

You have to live in or near Delaware. Big and small companies use Macs
in their art departments and science labs [I used a Mac when I did work
on robotics for Hewlett Packard]. One place got new 24 iMacs a few
months ago and got rid of their old Macs. Most are donated to nonprofits
and schools. Some are sold as surplus. Tips are announced quietly over
the grapevine.

Shhh...Wanna hot deal on a monitor?

Re: [CGUYS] Google Voice

2009-03-12 Thread Eric S. Sande
It will be interesting to watch Google terrorize complacent telecom
providers. Do you think they will suddenly find they need to manage
Google's traffic?

Probably not, it really doesn't make sense to be the traffic management
police when the bottom line is selling bandwidth.

Who are these complacent telecom providers?

And what is their agenda?

Is there a connection with the Illuminati?
