Precisely. Apple knows that some drivers won't work right with the 64
kernel, but it doesn't know if you have such drivers. It suspects that
you probably do so the default is 32 bit. You can try 64 by starting
up with the 6 and 4 keys depressed and from then on it will run
with the 64 kernel. If you run into trouble you restart with 3 and
2 depressed and that puts you back to a 32 kernel. A very elegant
solution to a problem that gave Vista users conniptions.

What I don't understand is why WFBs have such a hard time
understanding something so simple.

You'd think for a $400 peripheral, he would have made that simple check at

I agree, he shouldn't have to, but that's the reality right now.

Can any of our developers enlighten us as to how hard it is to port a driver

2009-08-28 Thread David K Watson

Well, in the past you've linked to John Siracusa's critiques when
discussing your problems with the finder. One of his big criticisms
(which has always seemed very silly to me) is that the finder is
a bad analogy or a mixed metaphor, in that it is not consistently
spatial. Since the finder is getting an anti-facelift (mostly the
same on the outside, revamped on the inside), I don't think
that this problem will be addressed.

If your issues are with moving large numbers of files or putting
trashed items back in their original places, then these have
supposedly been fixed. I'll find out for myself in just a little bit.

From:t.piwowar t...@tjpa.com

Reviewing Apple's tech notes I'm seeing many small changes and
improvements that I think will make Mac users far happier than flashy
new features. This may be the upgrade that finally fixes the Finder.

The Finder has been completely rewritten using the modern Cocoa
framework in Mac OS X, taking advantage of the new technologies in
Snow Leopard--including 64-bit support and Grand Central Dispatch. The
familiar Finder interface is unchanged, but you will discover the
Finder is faster and more responsive.

I haven't been following the story closely, but I suspect it was just
a random piece of clip art someone found. And it's unfair to now
analyze the job so closely as to try to match the skin tone of the
hand. Clip art is manipulated all the time; this really isn't a big
story.

Much funnier are the ones with extra hands or man-hands in place of
women's hands. There are collections of these on the internet, and
they're a staple on late night talk shows.

It would be a big mistake for MS to apologize. So far, the only
'apology' I've seen is a blurb in someone's blog.

That's interesting. It didn't occur to me to test the battery, since
the board is new. Now it's packed up for RMA ($11 shipping for a $60

With these LGA775 sockets you really don't have any choice of how the
cpu sits. It's either in the notches or it isn't. How the heck would I
even know if it's a bad cpu and not the mobo (in this case I tried an
old one, but for future reference)?

What jumper could be in a position to not cause a POST? There's a cmos

didn't think there _were_ any others.

I haven't been following the story closely, but I suspect it was just
a random piece of clip art someone found. And it's unfair to now

 story.

Much funnier are the ones with extra hands or man-hands in place of
women's hands. There are collections of these on the internet, and
they're a staple on late night talk shows.

It would be a big mistake for MS to apologize. So far, the only
'apology' I've seen is a blurb in someone's blog.

It would be just as embarrassing for the images to be found on a stock
image sellers web page. M$ can afford to buy new.

[CGUYS] M$ Google-Bashing Dirty Tricks

2009-08-28 Thread t.piwowar

http://www.dailyfinance.com/2009/08/28/microsofts-secret-screw-google-meetings-in-d-c/

Nevertheless, one source familiar with the meetings says, Law Media
Group has several people who work full-time on Google-bashing.
Everybody knows Microsoft is trying to throw roadblocks at Google and
knock them off their game. Microsoft is trying to harm Google in the
regulatory, legal, and litigation arenas because they're having
problems with Google in the competitive marketplace.

This is textbook Microsoft, the source adds. Microsoft has got some
of the best, highest-priced lobbyists that money can buy in Washington.

Probably. I've been meaning to get a new one for a while now. I'll
probably get a MSI net top box for now. Or a refurbed Mini when
another one comes available at the Apple store. . .or both. (-:

The only trouble I'm having is that MS seems to be pushing IE8--even
after I've declined to install it 3 times now, and have hidden that
update. I don't use IE (except for updates), and don't want an update.

I have auto updates set for notifications, but if you use the icon at
the bottom of the screen, you do not get to see what is
downloading. You do get a chance to see what the updates are before
you install them. I suspect I have downloaded IE8...maybe even
twice, but have not allowed the install.

I'm using XP Home SP3.

Textbook? Hardly.

MS didn't have any lobbyists until they were sued by the DOJ in the 90's in
collusion with MS competitors whose lobbyists were deep in the system. Now
MS plays the game.

Congrats.

Ok, At least that tells me, it isn't exactly a widespread problem.
