Re: [CGUYS] Correct way to burn a video DVD

2009-12-28 Thread Fred Holmes
Check out the compatibility of the explicit burner [brand / model], explicit
writable blank disc, and explicit intended player before performing the burn.
Or tread the first burn as a test flight. The latter is easier, as the
compatibility information isn't always easy to find. Few burners or players
are compatible with everything.

It's basically a crap shoot much of the time. Competition, you know.

If it won't play on the computer, the problem may be that the correct playing
CODEC isn't installed on the computer.

What's the correct way to burn a DVD video so that it can be watched
on either a computer or stand-alone DVD player? Any suggestions will
be greatly appreciated.

Windows XP

Re: [CGUYS] Correct way to burn a video DVD

2009-12-28 Thread Robert Carroll
Sounds like the DVD player isn't able to read the DVD disk. Some older
players are not compatible with some kinds of computer DVD disks.

Best advice for older players is to use a DVD+R disk. The brand of DVD
disk also might be important. I had an older DVD player for which some
brands of DVDs could be read only on about 20% of the burned disks,
whereas other brands could be read nearly 90% of those disks that were
burned.

My advice for brand: for single layer DVD, use the Taiyo Yuden brand.
For dual layer, use Verbatim.

What flavor of DVD is your friend using? DVD-R and DVD+R discs work in
most drives and players, while DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs work in fewer.

There are also a number of less common formats like VCD, SVCD, CDV, etc.

[CGUYS] iPod Touch App Downloads Jump 1,000%

2009-12-28 Thread tjp
In the on-going comparison to Android apps, Flurry noted that Android
apps experienced a 12% increase in downloads from November, while
Apple’s apps increased 51%. In addition, Android’s app download volume
was 13 times less than that for Apple. (Android apps did see a 93%
increase on Christmas Day.)

Makes sense...course you can't compare the ipod touch to the iphone or
android phones. But looks like good news for everyoneexcept those silly
WM and Palm holdouts.

Re: [CGUYS] Correct way to burn a video DVD

2009-12-28 Thread Tony B
Most DVD players can only play mpeg2 files, either as standard .vob or
as plain .mpg files. A few can play Divx or xvid encoded .avi files
(Philips). So the short answer is you need to find a program to
convert the file, and also (if desired) make a standard DVD.

The newest WIndows Movie Maker might do it. Whatever DVD program you
have there might do it. A bit more complicated, but free is Super
(http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html).
