US TV networks have mostly abandoned serious news for stories about kittens and handicapped children and cable is the land of screaming idiots. PBS has just cut back their news programming with more cuts to come. MHz has one great newscast after another. These are produced for a US audience so they cover as much or more US news as US networks, plus news of their countries, plus international news. I love it. I'm particularly impressed and surprised by Al Jazeera. Their English service is trying to out BBC the BBC. High quality and smart analysis with no propaganda. Re: [CGUYS] nexus one, the 'google' phone
Not sure where you meet these people, I don't know any iPhone haters, just ATT haters. Steve Ballmer laughed at the iphone before it came out, you'd think after about say...3 weeks on the market he was crapping his pants and diverting half of MS to coming up with a better WM handset...apparently not so. Android has only been out a little over a year and they are pretty strong, the widespread update to 2.0 and more handsets coming won't hurt anything either. After using both phones, I've seen only a slight advantage of the iPhone overall, but solid points on both sides to get either one. RIM has been doing this years, they are (for the most part) dependable and until recently the easiest best way to sync email which was it's most touted feature. As recent as 3.0 release iPhone didn't have full exchange support and those users with the BB need that kind of integration. There is also the fact that there are diehards who refuse to give up a hardware keyboard, some minds won't be changed on that front. I suspect one could also use a cordless handset, if one were to plug the base station into the MagicJack. (just as the base station is plugged into the RJ-11 wall outlet the same way that a corded handset is plugged into a wall outlet.) You just couldn't use a cordless handset by itself, without the base station. What the information is telling you is that the MagicJack does _not_ include its own handset. Nor does it use a headset (like Skype does). Nor does it use a USB speakerphone (like is available for Skype). It uses a POTS telephone, connected by the customary cord with an RJ-11 plug on the end. Anything that electrically looks like a POTS telephone connected with an RJ-11 plug should work. Dunno if it would accept pulse dialing, haven't tried it. But so much calling requires DTMF signalling for navigating menus that pulse dialing has limited use today anyway. Corded handset and rotary [pulsed] dial are two completely different concepts. Re: [CGUYS] MagicJack: a VoIP question
The real usefulness of magicjack is you can register it at the area code in the USA you wish despite being somewhere else ...that way, anyone who calls you using the magic jack phone number from the us in that area code makes a usually free local call and you receive the call in Brazil or wherever you are without further fees at all. If you are in the USA and have family in Brazil who must call you, you can leave them your magic jack and they can call to your USA phone number (for instance, if you visit the USA and get a cheap cell phone at WalMart or 7-11 store with prepaid sim card) for no charge!! If you leave your VOIP (e.g. MagicJack) always at one specific premises and register that premises with that telephone number at 911 (there is a process for doing this), then you will have reliable 911 service, just as landline numbers are registered with 911 (but the registration is done by the telephone company). But one of the advantages of MagicJack is that you can connect it to your notebook computer wherever you may carry and use it. There is no way (except manually) to change the 911 registration at present. There may be some way to do a lookup on the i.p. address of your computer, to determine where it is actually connected, but such a system hasn't yet (to my knowledge) been set up. If you connect your MagicJack to your notebook computer that is connected to the Internet anywhere (e.g., Iraq), calls that you place to the U.S. are free (no call placement or connection time charges) (unless for some reason VOIP packets are somehow killed.) It's also nice that voice mail messages received on VOIP systems can be sent to you by e-mail as .wav file attachments. Its all about central control. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** * * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] Droid/Eris questions
I believe many carriers allow a 30-day experience with a new subsidized device before you are fully committed to the 2-year contract. With ATT, I only needed to wait 18 months before going from a Q9h to my 3GS. It would have been 2 years if I had switched carriers. I've seen my 3GS perform noticeably faster than a friend's 3G. OS 4 is rumored to be soon and Apple seems to be on an annual summer cycle for new iPhone iterations. YMMV Subject: Re: Droid/Eris questions I'm waiting out CES to see if anything really cool gets announced. The Droid is a near miss- I want a better keyboard than than one. More like my LG ENV with raised buttons not a flat plane of keys. The droid keyboard is everything I dislike about the touch screen keyboards but mechanical. The value of an idea has nothing to do with the honesty of the man expressing it. -- Oscar Wilde * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] Kill it!!!
So if I decide I want to wire my outhouse for broadband, Eric should be compelled to haul a cable or go to jail? If you've got the casheesh to cover my costs, and you're in my territory, I'll wire that joint like George Jetson. But I'm not going to do it at a loss. I'm not a charity, I'm a for profit business accountable to my stockholders. Who are happy with my dividend but not exactly pleased with the stock performance. I think there's a lot of stress here that is based on ideology and self-interest. Folks, I CAN put a chicken in every pot as far as broadband. I'm working on it. The problem is that my pockets, while deep, aren't deep enough to do it as fast as certain people would prefer. Take rate is an issue. If I wire fifty houses for FIOS and only ten subscibe, I'm losing money. The reality is that a lot of people don't actually give a rat's ass about broadband. Those that want it the most tend to live further away from my POPs, which drives up the cost of the buildout. We'll get to them, but this is all a capital investment balancing act. But we don't need no stinkin' government handouts. We'll do this on our own, unless the American people get fed up and vote for more bread and circuses. If that happens I'll deploy faster. But I will not compromise the quality of my build or the financial basis of my company under any circumstances. And you can take that to the bank. (Obviously not a feel-good message, and of course I don't speak for anyone other than myself, certainly not that telephone company that I allegedly work for,) * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Re: [CGUYS] Kill it!!!
You could blame it on terrorists. That's not fair. We lost people in the 9/11 attacks. Maybe you didn't know that. They were on their jobs. I'm not forgetting that, ever. We're somewhat of an extended family. What can I say about those we lost? Probably not enough. I have nightmares about little Asia Cottom on her first plane ride. Donna Bowen burned to death in the Pentagon. The guys in the WTC. But we won that day. Yes our people did do their jobs. Yes we got the network up and running after a major hit. I'm proud to say that everyone around me did their job, just as they were trained. And our training is the best in the world. Don't make any mistake. We don't forget this. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
Re: [CGUYS] bug
Time for you to run some malware scans. http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/10-free-online-malware-and-virus-scanners/ . Install Spybot as suggested and do the Immunize thing. I think the ultimate cause of this was that you probably invited it onboard. i.e., it wasn't some virus payload. You need to be real careful when installing apps. I think you're running Win7 now? That's good, but add more protection by running a limited user account, and keep UAC set fairly high. PS pwn is pronounced pone rhymes with bone. Or pwned poned rhymes with and means owned. Like a few others (zomg!), presumably started from fast typing with the o and p keys being switched. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Malwarebytes is another good one. Excellent choice. I have used their products numerous times (free ones) to fix some very buggy computers. Stewart At 08:09 PM 1/3/2010, you wrote: Malwarebytes is another good one.
