TAXES:
What Every Entrepreneur and Consultant Needs To Know
Speaker: Jina Etienne, CPA, Etienne Associates

Is your business paying more in taxes than required by law?
Whether your business grosses millions of dollars each year
or you are just getting started as an independent
consultant, you probably hire an outside accountant to
handle tax return submission. The ultimate responsibility
for paying appropriate taxes, however, is yours. Do you have
the basic accounting knowledge needed to supervise the work
of your accountant? Do you stay current on tax law changes?

Because tax return deadlines for corporations and
individuals are approaching, the focus of this presentation
will be on income tax compliance and preparation rather than
on tax planning and consulting issues. This presentation
will alert you to mistakes and oversights that can cost you
money, and to tax law changes you need to know about. The
presentation will be followed by a question and answer
session, so gather your questions and join us.

Speaker: Jina Etienne, CPA, has more than 15 years of public
accounting experience. She began her career with Deloitte
Touche, one of the Big Eight accounting firms, where her
focus was tax planning and compliance for corporations,
partnerships, and S corporations ranging from government
contractors and vending companies to hospitality and retail
firms. When she left Deloitte Touche to start Etienne
Associates, LLC, her focus shifted to the needs of small-
and medium-sized businesses.

With her own practice, Jina Etienne provides a wide range of
accounting services for businesses and individuals,
including tax planning and preparation, and business
consulting. Her client base is diverse, including retail and
service-based businesses as well as consultants and
contractors. For individuals, her services generally include
tax return preparation and tax planning, including tax
research and representation before the IRS.

Ms. Etienne earned an M.S. in taxation in 1993 and a
B.S.B.A. in accounting in 1989 from American University.
Jina has also taught accounting as an adjunct professor at
American University and teaches QuickBooks at accounting
seminars and conferences.

TECH OPTIONS FOR MOBILE BUSINESS:
Smartphones, Netbooks, Accessories, Plans, Software,
  Services, and More
Speaker: Rob Pegoraro, _The Washington Post_

What's worse than forgetting your laptop's power adapter
before embarking on a 5-day business trip? And, choosing not
to pack your phone's power adapter--because you can just
recharge it off the laptop's USB port. This month's speaker,
_Washington Post_ technology columnist Rob Pegoraro, managed
to pull off this two-fer of blunders 3 years ago on his way
to the Consumer Electronics Show, but then managed to put in
a solid week of reporting.

Pegoraro--who, despite his youthful appearance in some
out-of-date photos, has been doing this long enough to
remember when filing copy meant dialing up to a _Post_-run
BBS and pasting text into a terminal window--will talk about
what to do in that situation. He'll also share other tips
about gadgets, software, and services he's used and
appreciated when traveling for the _Post_ and on his own
dime.

Speaker: Rob Pegoraro writes the Fast Forward column, a
weekly look at computers, the Internet, and consumer
electronics, and the Help File QA feature. Online, he
writes the Faster Forward blog, hosts Web chats, and holds
forth on Twitter.

Pegoraro has been with the _Post_ since 1993, during which

MICROSOFT WINDOWS 7 OPERATING SYSTEM
Speaker: Mark Mabee, IT Network Pro

Microsoft released its Windows 7 operating system in October
2009. Did all the release candidate features make it into
the final product? Is now the time for you to get a new
computer with Windows 7, or does the new operating system
have more bugs than you have time to deal with? Can you look
forward to using Windows 7 effortlessly after suffering
through or working around the Microsoft Vista operating
system? Is it true that some of the features of Windows 7
make it more like a Mac in appearance and functionality?

Join us on Saturday, March 20, 2010, as long-time CPCUG
member Mark Mabee demonstrates Windows 7 and investigates
its capabilities. Bring your questions.

Using Windows 7 now? Join us and share your experiences.

Speaker: Mark Mabee, an IT network professional, is a
long-time member of CPCUG. He has been the featured
presenter at a number of CPCUG events and has handled
technical questions during pre-presentation QA sessions at
other events.

INCREASING PRODUCTIVITY WITH MOBILE APPS
Speaker: Barg Upender, Mobomo, Founder and CEO

Smartphones powered by Apple's iPhone and Google's Android
platforms are transforming the business landscape. Now, more
than ever, people on the go can carry their offices in their
pockets and be more productive. With small pieces of
software known as apps, smartphones do so much more than
send and receive calls and e-mail and text messages. With
more than 100,000 apps on Apple's platform, there's an app
for just about everything. With the touch of a button,
someone on the go can manage client relationships and sales
leads, find a nearby shipping center, comparison shop, and
much more.

During this session we will discuss some of the best
business apps for the iPhone, including several from Mobomo.
We will also explore where the mobile industry is heading.

Speaker: Barg Upender is the founder and CEO of Mobomo, a
mobile development company focused on building Smart Apps
for Smartphones. As a technologist with 20 years of
experience in commercial software product development, he
has helped launch successful products for Fortune 500
companies, nonprofits, and government agencies including
AARP, NIH, Comcast, GEICO, and United Technologies. In 2009
_Washingtonian_ magazine named Barg one of its Top 100 Tech
Titans.

As a serial entrepreneur, Barg Upender founded and sold
Concentric Methods, a biomedical informatics company. He
also was a founding member of NeoDiagnostix Inc., a
biomarker-based cancer diagnostic company. In addition, he
was a founding partner of Intridea, a Web development
company. Products developed at Intridea are funded for
launch.

Barg Upender has been covered by many publications including
BusinessWeek, VentureBeat, The Washington Post, The Wall
Street Journal, and Washington Business Journal. He earned a
Masters in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University
and a Masters in Computer Science from Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute. He is an alumnus of the MindShare CEO
Network.

Mobomo provides end-to-end mobile strategy, design, and
development for businesses and organizations that want to
acquire, retain, and engage mobile customers. Combining
mobile expertise with disciplines in business strategy,
interactive marketing, Web development, and systems
engineering, Mobomo creates mobile applications for the
Apple iPhone, Google Android, Palm Pre, and other smartphone
platforms.

TAXES: What Every Entrepreneur and Consultant Needs To Know
Speaker: Jina Etienne, CPA, Etienne Associates, LLC

Jina has also taught accounting as an adjunct professor at
American University and teaches QuickBooks at local
accounting seminars and conferences.

FIREFOX AND FIREFOX EXTENSIONS
Speaker: Steve Auerbach
Independent Software Developer

The best thing about Firefox is that there are thousands of
extensions available to customize it--the very worst thing
about Firefox is that there are thousands of extensions
available.

We will discuss the differences between add-ons, plug-ins,
and extensions, and the extensions speaker Steve Auerbach
has installed on his laptop. Assuming the Internet
connectivity gods smile on us, we will explore the online
Firefox extension library. Those already having strong
opinions on extensions are urged to attend and share their
experiences so we all benefit.

Speaker: Steve Auerbach wrote his first computer program in
1962 for a high tech company in New York City: Macy's. After
Macy's he spent 7 years with IBM in various sales offices
doing technical support. He's been an independent software
developer since 1975, and still does some coding.

Steve volunteers at the Smithsonian Institution, helping out
where he can at http://www.ResidentAssociates.org.

Steve Auerbach has a BS from MIT and an MS from NYU, but, at
age 72, he says his college education is really old news.

HOW TO GET BUSINESS WITH SOCIAL MEDIA
Shashi Bellamkonda, The Social Media Swami, Network Solutions

Social Media is a term that is getting a lot of attention.
The tools are usually free but require a significant
investment of time. How can these tools help you in your
business? Are there success stories? What goals need to be
set? How best to manage the time spent? This session will
answer these questions and more. By the end of the afternoon
you'll be ready to connect with your customers on their turf
and to gain new customers.

Speaker: Shashi Bellamkonda works at the heart of Web
hosting company Network Solutions as the Head of Social
Media Strategy, its first Social Media Swami. In this
leadership role he has helped Network Solutions aggressively
move into the online space to actively listen to and
interact with customers. This effort was rewarded when

Communications Award for Online Reputation Management and
the 2009 Gold Quill Award of Excellence in Social Media from
the International Association of Business Communicators
(IABC).

As a prolific Twitterer, blogger, and product innovator,
Shashi lives for technology, testing new innovations and
helping small business owners succeed. A self-described
Internet junkie and thought leader, Shashi has presented
on Social Media Tools for Small Business, How To Sell
Social Media to Your Boss, and Online Reputation
Management--Best Practices Lessons Learned at national
and regional conferences including SXSW, NewComm Forum
(SNCR.org), Online Media Boot Camp, DC Chamber of Commerce,
the Affiliate Summit, American Independent Writers, and
PodCamps. _Washingtonian_ magazine named Shashi a Washington
Tech Titan. Other media mentions include _The Washington
Post_, Webmaster Radio, BlogTalkRadio, and Shel Holtz's For
Immediate Release.

and tech toys, and to answer questions about social media
and technology. Topics covered include how to prevent
popups, avoid viruses, and save computers from hackers, as
well as the ever-popular Why is my computer freezing?

Re: [CGUYS] Difference between a mailing list and a web forum

2009-08-09 Thread Barbara Conn
On Sun, August 9, 2009 10:12 am, Tony B wrote:

Wow. What a wacky take on things. I think the distortions we're seeing
are due to the fact that you're asking the question on a mailing list,
which still has some members that have never done it any other way.
But 'web' forums are much older than mailing lists (they used to be
called 'bulletin boards') and can do anything a mailing list can and
 then some.

Web forums can be set up to send you emails when people post. And they
can even be set up to take your email responses. This isn't a
particularly popular way of doing things, but it's not unheard of.

It's hard to draw a direct comparison because a lot depends on how
things are set up. This list for example, allows no attachments at
all. In fact, it doesn't even allow you to underline or bold your
text. And it doesn't store any messages.

Archives of messages to this are available. Go to http://www.cguys.com for
more information. (This info at bottom of messages.)

I'd like to say the biggest difference is that mail lists require you
to receive new messages in your email as soon as someone sends them.

Not if you set your list subscriptions to receive messages via digest.
Then you get messages in batches one or more times a day, depending on
list setup.

This is true on this list, but Yahoo 'mail' lists allow you to browse
online and never actually ever receive an email from them at all!

LISTSERV has the option to allow subscribers to browse messages online
instead of receiving them via their e-mail accounts. It depends on how the
software has been structured by the LISTSERV administrator. Depending on
setup, you can also post to LISTSERV lists online. (I like the LISTSERV
Web interface, but it does have several of what I'd call glitches,
depending on setup.)

I think the real reason web forums have taken off lately is because
they're just better at handling large amounts of messages in a
universal threaded manner. Today's email clients have gotten better at
threading, but once a discussion goes beyond 10-20 posts, few people
want to store all that at home. Of course, even this is changing with
clients like Gmail as there's almost no reason to ever delete a
 message.

Still, pick any busy forum and try to imagine dealing with that amount
of email. e.g. the Corvette Forum (http://forums.corvetteforum.com/)
with 75,000 posts last week. No Way! My own small community forum had
1257 posts last week; no one person wants to read a tenth of that, so
why would anyone want to receive all those emails?

Perhaps so that it goes through your own mail filtering system? You can
set up auto deletes for mail not filtered into designated folders, if you
choose.

AOL does not offer archiving. Nor, AFAIK, online viewing of any type.
As I recall someone is doing this themselves with third party
software. That's nice, but forum software does it automatically.

Yes, I imagine a really dedicated person could just get a digest of
e.g. 200 messages a day and still manage to follow a few threads. I
sure can't see myself doing it. And our Neighborhood Watch and Lost
Pets forums offer instant notification via email/text. What good would
those alerts be in the middle of a digest 12 hours later?

No, I don't think it's possible to automatically filter in wanted mail
(or out unwanted mail). In the first place, it would require the OP to
accurately name a new thread, and participants to accurately rename
the thread when it wanders. e.g. I never visit our community's Sports
forum. But how would I filter out those threads using keywords?

Here's a possibility to tweak as desired, so it works for youo: Don't use
digest mode. Filter messages to folders via your selected message
keywords, set to search entire messages, not just subject keywords. Set up
auto-delete for messages from active lists not filtered into desired
folders via keywords. (If need be, you can always go searching for a
missed message in the Web archive of the list.)

Most businesses can benefit from a good Web site, but there's more to looking
good on the 'Net than jazzy graphics. Your business Web site needs appropriate
content as well. Ineffective Web site content can mean prospective clients pass
right over your site, moving on to the next site and business. Speaker Merry
Bruns will provide new practical tips on making your content live up to your
site graphics and maximizing your content for your customer.

Speaker: Merry Bruns is an online content strategist, editor, and Web writing
trainer who focuses on communicating Web content to audiences clearly and with
impact. Producing and editing Web sites since 1994, she brings a background in
communications, advertising, and journalism to her work. Merry provides
in-house training for organizations and has taught Writing and Editing for the
Web to hundreds of students around the world.

Frequently interviewed about content strategy and Web writing issues, Merry
Bruns is also an invited speaker and trainer at Web conferences and meetings
across the United States. In Washington, DC, she holds open classes at the
National Press Club. In addition, since 1997 Merry has hosted Content
Coffee, an occasional roundtable at the National Press Club for Web content
managers, editors, and writers.

As principal of ScienceSites Communications (http://www.sciencesitescom.com),
Merry Bruns has produced and edited Web sites for numerous business,
government, educational, and science organizations. Clients for content
strategy and training have included Accenture, National Academy of Sciences,

CASHING IN THROUGH A WEB PRESENCE
Speaker: Tom Gutnick, Sunny Banana IT Consulting

Audience: No technical expertise needed--just your good business savvy.

Every small business, consultant, and freelancer needs a presence on the
Internet--that's where potential customers expect to find you. This session
will discuss the reasons why, and walk you through the steps involved in
establishing a domain name and Web site, inexpensively and easily. We'll also
have a brief discussion of search engine rankings. Learn how to bust through
the jargon, and learn enough to do it on your own or to confidently hire
someone.

Speaker: Tom Gutnick, the owner of Sunny Banana IT Consulting, has decades of
experience in many areas of information technology, including information
security, enterprise architecture, Web site design, and software development.
His clients have ranged from Fortune 500 corporations to small businesses and
nonprofit organizations. He has taught everything from junior high science as a
Peace Corps volunteer to high-level computer seminars for corporate audiences.
In addition to personal technology classes for Arlington Adult Education, he
teaches information systems classes at Northern Virginia Community College.

Sunny Banana IT Consulting helps small businesses and individuals who are
struggling with the complexities of technology and are too small to have their
our own IT departments. With in-depth knowledge and experience, Sunny Banana
helps clients harness the right technology for their business, with patient and
jargon-free consultation and training customized to their needs.

Re: [CGUYS] error message makes plugin installation fail

2008-08-07 Thread Barbara Conn
Hmmm . . .

Clicking on PayPal_Plug-In.exe with the Zone Alarm quarantine window in
view results in the immediate quarantine of--

 Trojan Dropper.Win32.Agent.vfw

I could find no useful information about this specific trojan on the Web.

I deleted it from my system.

I guess it's time to write to PayPal.com.

Puzzling--others seem to be happily using this incarnation of the PayPal
plug-in.

[The echeck cleared, transforming JV16PowerTools 2008 from trialware to
licensed software, and I also uninstalled the program recommended by a
friend last week.]

The software says it has 27 days left to run--it's acting as a trial until
the echeck clears? I don't remember running into that before.

I'll try installing the PayPal plugin again after JV16Tools recognized
 that its been purchased.

I don't know the details of that program. Anything recently installed
 would be a suspect.

A runtime environment is like a virtual machine that the application
 runs
under. It can be use to more easily move the application among different
kinds of hardware or to simplify the programming of the application. For
example an application coded using an interpreted language would need a
runtime environment while one that is compiled would probably not.

[CGUYS] error message makes plugin installation fail

2008-08-04 Thread Barbara Conn
I was trying to install a PayPal plugin (for the virtual MasterCard) and
got the following error message:

Feature transfer error:

Feature: Program Files
Component: ATL71
File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\atl71.dll
Error: Access is denied

About my system:

Computer OS: Windows XP Home, Service Pack 3
ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite 7.0.483

JV17PowerTools2008 1.8.0.466 registry cleaner
I don't find atl71.dll in the windows\system32\ subdirectory
[I used to have the PayPal Virtual MasterCard installed, but it has
disappeared--I may not have used it for a couple years (or more)]

Is the error likely because I'm missing atl71.dll?

Does Windows XP Home come with this DLL?

Or, is it more likely that registry cleaning removed it?

Or, is there a conflict with Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite?

Does atl71.dll pose a threat to my computer?

Should get this dll?

What site do you recommend for downloading this file?

Thanks,

Barb

steps will be described and demonstrated.

Speaker: Gabriel Goldberg is a technology consultant, writer, and editor. He
has written for and edited an IBM technology magazine, contributes to trade and
consumer publications (such as the Jobs and Real Estate sections of _The

INVENTING BASICS:
Getting Started As an Independent Inventor
Speaker: David Whiteis
Microsoft Certified Networking Engineer, BubbleRings.com

You've got a great idea for an invention--what's next? Inventor David
Whiteis will give us an overview of the process of getting an independent
invention to market. His talk will include information on how to evaluate
and protect your idea, how and when to create a prototype, and how to
publicize and license or sell an invention.

Speaker: David Whiteis is a local inventor who sold his first patent to a
subsidiary of Microsoft in 1998. He works full time as a computer
networking engineer, while continuing to work part time on inventing and
developing new products. He has also been involved with helping other
people interested in creating new inventions and obtaining patents.

David is a Microsoft Certified Networking Engineer, currently working at a
local pharmaceutical firm. His first patent was for a method of
recommending music to individuals based on the music they already enjoy,
much like the LAST.FM Web system. He may be better known for making it to
the final 24 during season 1 of the ABC TV show _American Inventor_. His
invention: a jewelry box that takes a short video of a woman's reaction
when she first sees her diamond engagement ring. His current inventing
efforts include perfecting and trying to get to market a line of
underwater toys.

Description (for Feb. 16 FREE seminar):

So, you've got an idea to produce a podcast. You've heard them--some
well produced, others, well, not. All you know is that everyone seems
to be doing one. How do you start? During this overview of the
process of podcast creation, you will learn--

o How to ask the questions your podcast will answer
o What elements go into a production to make it sound better than
ordinary
o How to identify your target audience
o When are you ready to piece it together
o Where should you record (Hint: Not in your office!)
o Why the extra effort can pay off

Mike Weiner will share some of the ingredients that go into creating your
own podcast, or what you need to look for if hiring a contractor to do the
work.

Speaker: Mike Weiner brings 36 years of broadcast and production expertise
to this seminar. He is a nationally recognizable voiceover talent and
producer, and, in addition to radio, television, film, and multimedia
production, he is hired regularly to create podcasts for clients such as
Fortune 100 corporations and federal agencies, including the U.S.
Department of Energy.

Mike holds a BS in Communication Arts, a BA in Business and Management,
and an MBA in marketing, along with an advanced degree from the SOHK.
(He'll tell you what that is during his presentation.)

Mike Weiner formed The Image Generators, Inc., in 1985 to create marketing
communications that tell the client's story. He has vast resources of
talent throughout the United States, including in his hometown of
Washington, DC, and in Hollywood. The mission of The Image
Generators is to make you sound great!

TAXES:
What Every Entrepreneur and Consultant Needs To Know
Speaker: Jina Etienne, CPA

Audience: Consultants, Small Business Owners, Entrepreneurs, Soon-To-Be
Small Business Owners, Freelancers, and Free Agents

Description: Is your business paying more in taxes than required by law?
Whether your business grosses millions of dollars each year or you are
just getting started as an independent consultant, you probably hire an
outside accountant to handle tax return submission. The ultimate
responsibility for paying appropriate taxes, however, is yours. Do you
have the basic accounting knowledge needed to supervise the work of your
accountant? Do you stay current on tax law changes?

Because tax return deadlines for corporations and individuals are
approaching, the focus of this presentation will be on income tax
compliance and preparation rather than on tax planning and consulting
issues. This presentation will alert you to mistakes and oversights that
can cost you money, and to tax law changes you need to know about. The
presentation will be followed by a question and answer session, so gather
your questions and join us.

Speaker: Jina Etienne, CPA, has more than 15 years of public accounting
experience. She began her career with Deloitte Touche, one of the Big
Eight accounting firms, where her focus was tax planning and compliance
for corporations, partnerships, and S corporations ranging from government
contractors and vending companies to hospitality and retail firms. When
she left Deloitte Touche to start Etienne Associates, LLC, her focus
shifted to the needs of small- and medium-sized businesses.

With her own practice, Jina Etienne provides a wide range of accounting
services for businesses and individuals, including tax planning and
preparation, and business consulting. Her client base is diverse,
including retail and service-based businesses as well as consultants and
contractors. For individuals, her services generally include tax return
preparation and tax planning, including tax research and representation
before the IRS.

Ms. Etienne earned an M.S. in taxation in 1993 and a B.S.B.A. in
accounting in 1989 from American University. Jina has also taught
accounting as an adjunct professor at American University and teaches
QuickBooks at local accounting seminars and conferences.

STRATEGIES FOR WEB SOURCING
Speaker: Miles Fawcett, Executive Vice President and General Manager,
Bridgeline Software Inc.

Audience: Individuals who manage the creation of Web sites or plan to
create a Web site (primarily through outside resources)

Description: The Internet is littered with unsuccessful efforts to build
Web sites. In August 2004, _InfoWorld_ reported that only 34 percent of
projects surveyed were successful. There are many risk factors that
contribute to this. At the same time, options for Web development sources
have exploded, ranging from 6- or 7-figure projects created by national
firms to projects developed by offshore or individual contractors for just
thousands of dollars. A large amount of money invested does not always
assure a positive outcome.

In this session, Miles Fawcett, founder of the Web development firm iapps
(acquired by Bridgeline Software Inc in 2004), will identify the pros and
cons of various approaches to Web development contracting. The risks of
different approaches and how to mitigate those risks will be discussed.

You will learn--

1) The various approaches to Web development (for example, local firms,
offshore vendors, and individual contractors), the pros and cons of each,
and strategies for mitigating the risk with each.

2) How to select a partner to deliver a Web project

3) The differences between open- and closed-source technology and systems,
and how they could impact your project

4) How to get the results you want from a Web development initiative

Speaker: Miles Fawcett founded iapps in 1994 and has led the development
of more than 200 Web initiatives. In 2004 he sold iapps to Bridgeline
Software, where he serves as General Manager and Executive Vice President.
Miles has extensive experience with Web technologies, human factors
engineering, visual art direction, entrepreneurship, and search engine
marketing and optimization.

In addition, Miles Fawcett is an active painter, photographer, and
documentary filmmaker. He has produced a number of films, including one on
a unique subculture of retirees who travel the United States in Airstream
Travel Trailers. Many of his paintings are exhibited at the iapps
Washington, DC, office.

Miles Fawcett graduated from the Park School of Communications at Ithaca
College and served 2 years on the faculty of the American University
Graduate School of Communications. He currently serves on the board of Men
Can Stop Rape (http://www.mencanstoprape.com) and is a judge in the
Nonprofit and Government category for the Computerworld Smithsonian Awards
(http://www.cwheroes.org).

[CGUYS] CPCUG Programmers SIG: Ruby on Rails, *This* Wednesday

2007-10-02 Thread Barbara Conn
Wednesday, October 3, 7:00-10:00 pm
Capital PC User Group (CPCUG) Programmers SIG

RUBY ON RAILS
Speaker: Brian Moelk, Brain Endeavor, LLC

Location:
Inter-American Development Bank (Annex Building)
1350 New York Avenue, NW, Room B-300, Washington, DC
Metrorail (two stations within two blocks):
o Metro Center: Red, Blue, and Orange Lines
o McPherson Square: Green and Yellow Lines
Directions and map: http://programmers.cpcug.org/directions.htm

Featured speaker Brian Moelk will discuss Ruby on Rails, the hot Web
development framework. He'll begin with a quick introduction to the Ruby
language and Rails framework, build a simple application, and demonstrate
how Rails takes care of a lot of the grunt work. Discussion will include a
technical as well as a cultural comparison of the Delphi type of RAD with
the Rails framework approach, which many Java Web developers find
appealing.

Ruby tools such as CodeGear's new Ruby on Rails IDE, 3rd Rail, will be
demoed. (Tools, however, will not be the focus of the presentation.)

Time permitting, Brian Moelk will discuss how Ruby is already expanding
(JRuby, IronRuby, YARV) and some Rails-like frameworks such as Grails and
g-framework.

Speaker: Brian Moelk has been programming for most of his life. His formal
training began with Turbo Pascal, and he has been working with Delphi
since it first came out. Since then, coding Delphi, C++, and Java, he's
been a part of two start-ups in the Washington, DC, area.

Brian owns and runs Brain Endeavor, LLC, and cannot conceive of doing
anything other than crafting great code and helping companies use
technology effectively. When not coding, he enjoys cycling, soccer,
movies, music, and being in the moment.

Optional Networking/Socializing: Before the meeting, about 6:15 pm, we get
together informally at the Shops at National Place International Food
Court, southwest corner of 13th F St., NW, Lower Level.

Special Guest: Marco Cantu, Author, _Delphi 2007 Handbook_, the guide to
what's new in Delphi 2007 for Win32, best-selling author of the Mastering
Delphi Series.

BUILDING A SCALABLE BACK OFFICE, WiMAX
Speaker: Doug Smith, CIO, DigitalBridge Communications

In recent years the IT software and services landscape has changed
dramatically. How have those changes affected the building of back office
systems and infrastructure? By describing successful implementations, Doug
will discuss how his company built, with very limited human and capital
resources, an end-to-end, automated back-office environment in a very
short period of time.

During the course of the presentation Doug will also give attendees an
overview of WiMAX, covering how it works and the advantages its use is
expected to bring to the market.

Speaker: Doug Smith is the CIO of DigitalBridge Communications, the first
WiMAX operator to deploy a production WiMAX network in the United States.
Doug has more than 18 years of IT and IT management experience across a
number of industries including manufacturing, publishing, distribution,
insurance, and Internet/telecommunications. Before joining DigitalBridge
Communications, Doug was Vice President of Business Systems Development at
America Online, where he was responsible AOL's back office systems,
including billing, marketing, customer care, and online advertising.

DigitalBridge Communications (DBC) provides broadband wireless services
(including high-speed data, voice over IP, and locally hosted community
content) to consumers and businesses in underserved rural, suburban,
military, and university communities. It utilizes WiMAX technology to
provide portable high-speed connections anywhere in its service area. DBC
is committed to working with local communities and schools to make
broadband services and content available to residents and students often
left behind.

With WiMAX, DBC is able to offer a broadband wireless service that is
reliable, portable, affordable, fast, and easy to install. Setting up DBC
service involves plug-and-surf installation, enabling customers to set
up service on their own in minutes. When DBC launches service in a
community, it deploys base stations that use licensed radio frequencies to
reach each customer through small, wireless modems. Because no wires are
required to establish service, DBC's service is portable throughout its
service area, and customers can use the service inside or outside their
homes and offices.

Speaker: Derek M. Meyer

Audience: Anyone with a mobile phone, PDA, and/or a smartphone

Purpose: To wade through the hype surrounding the next generation of
smartphones (including the iPhone) and to become more productive

Description: While on the go, do you need a better way to keep in touch
with colleagues, friends, and family via texting, instant messenging,
e-mail, and the Web? Would you like an alternative to lugging around a
heavy laptop to make presentations? If you answered Yes, you won't want
to miss this event--put it on your mobile calendar now!

Smartphones are increasingly popular. And, as the next generation moves
into the marketplace over the next 3 months, they will become ubiquitous.
They are used for organizing business and leisure activities, and even for
recreation. This presentation will describe what they are, what functions
they are best suited to handle, what the choices are, how to set them up,
and how to integrate and synchronize your smartphone with your PCs.

In addition, attendees will learn what's available now in Blackberry,
Windows Mobile, and PalmOs smartphones, what's arriving soon, pitfalls in
selecting a device and a carrier, unlocked devices and options, must
have software and hardware, and how to maximize productivity and
troubleshoot.

Derek is a lively presenter who will also share ways to have fun with a
smartphone!

Already a smartphone guru? Come to this meeting and share your tips and
tricks.

Speaker: CPCUG member Derek Meyer is a consultant and trainer
on using wireless devices, including smartphones, PDAs, Blackberry
