I believe the case is that when you download free AVG, registration
is required to keep it running. They send you an email with a
registration key or such and you have to install it in your AVG
within 60 days or such or the free AVG copy will stop working...

db

Untrue regarding registration or it stops working. NOT according to
my having it installed on a few machines.

Basic antivirus and antispyware protection for Windows available to
download for free. Limited features, no support, for private and
non-commercial use only.

http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe

db, where did you get the information regarding AVG and it stopping
working without registration???
Something tells me that you are thinking about another of the free
Anti-Virus programs..

I use it on my anti-spam server, which scans incoming mail for viri as well.
Works nicely and has a reasonably small footprint. $50/year.

I've always found it at http://free.grisoft.com. That's where I
went to get 8.0 as an upgrade to 7.5.

In a few days AVG's free antivirus software will be defunct,
requiring an upgrade to a paid version. Are there any other free or
low cost anti-virus programs or is the paid AVG as good and
comparably priced as any?

Thanks

2008-06-23 Thread Ranbo
Thanks for the suggestions. Funny, the ONLY option it was giving me when I
clicked on the notice of expiration was for the paid AVG 8.0; think it was a
larger security bundle than just antivirus or whatever is provided in the
free AVG. Had to go to Grisoft.com to get the free version. Guess they'd
rather have me pay $54 or something than get the free version.

AVG misleads it's free users every year or so into believing their
free product is being discontinued. It hasn't been yet, but it gets
harder and harder to _find_ the free one.

Re: [CGUYS] Free antivirus to replace AVG?

2008-06-22 Thread Steve at Verizon
Are you using AVG 7.5 and getting that message? Because AVG came out
with 8.0 in April and many of us are using it and there is nothing on
their website about discontinuing the free version. Google free AVG to
get the free version. (They don't make it easy to find the free version
from their main site.)
