[CGUYS] MP3 Player for the Visually Handicapped?

2008-12-16 Thread John covici
The newest ipods have talking menus and will even speak the song
title. Also, if you go to rockbox.org you could get a player which
you could put their software on and it would speak quite a bit of
useful information.

Hope this helps.

Re: [CGUYS] MP3 Player for the Visually Handicapped?

2008-12-16 Thread Stephen Brownfield
As a person who works with individuals with disabilities, I feel that I
should weigh in on this.
It is important to find out works for the person. Different things
work for different people. So as far as a portable MP3 player goes, I'd
recommend taking her to a store where she could try different types of
them. That way she could tell you what controls she likes and which
one she dislikes. If she has a computer she can access the MP3 files
through something like Media Player (for windows) or iTunes (for
Windows or Mac). What is important if she is using a computer to
use the Accessibility Options (in Windows control panel) or the
Universal Access (in Mac's System Preferences) both of these can be
used to change the size and contrast of the items on the screen. Mac
also has a built in screen reader. (I have not used it, so I don't know
how good it is.) Windows does not have built in screen reader, however
two very good third party screen readers are out there for Windows
machines (JAWS and Window-Eyes). They are both rather expensive. I
have a client who is blind and accesses a computer using JAWS. He often
goes to an Old Time Radio site and listens via his Windows Media Player.
I realize this is more of a general answer, but as I stated
earlier different things work for different people. If I can be of
any help, feel free to contact me off list.

Why not? If the best won't do you need to tell us what your special
requirements are.

I know several people who got iPod Shuffles ($49) for their elderly
parents. All were very happy. Controls are very easy for someone with
poor vision.

Are there any other solutions than the 4th gen iPod? I don't know of
any other mp3 players that have text to speech for menus, albums,
artists etc. You do need the latest iTunes, but it is much less of a
dog on Windows than it was.
