I checked all fans, used a shop vac to blow the case out etc. Idle, the two
programs report the cpu at 48c. Once I start transcoding, it jumps to 70,
CPU activity of course jumps to 95% plus.

It's certainly possible. Especially if the CPU fan isn't working, or
is dirty, or the thermal paste needs replacing, or if the room temp is
high. I suppose the giveaway would be if the temp gradually rises
after turning on the machine. i.e., if it comes on at 65c, it's likely
just a temp sensor calibration problem.

I've read these CPU's run hot...but that hot?

I found that page in my searching also..this was one of those pages that was
very useful...or not. It seems pretty vague. You could be ok, or you might
not be. The temp listed for my class of CPU seems to be near what I'm
hitting so...we'll see I suppose. You wouldn't think reporting the temp of
a cpu would be so hard to pin down since that is such an important factor in
the health of the computer.

Thanks, I might just open it up and stick a big fan on it while I transcode.

 http://www.heatsink-guide.com/content.php?content=maxtemp.shtml

While not listing the D 495 specifically, this page suggests that 70C is
 not too hot.

Note that this page lists case temps, which are lower than reported temps.
This gives you even more margin.

You can often bring down temps significantly by opening the case and
pointing a big fan at the thing.

Also consider how much of this you are going to be doing. If just a little
 then don't bother to fix.

This Intel PDF should have the answer. They certainly don't make it easy to
find.

Re: [CGUYS] pentium d 945

2009-06-10 Thread Tony B
I can't get either cpuz or Everest to show mu cpu temps. What am I
doing wrong? I know I've got apps here somewhere that will do it, but
it's still early for me.

I swear I used to have something that showed cpu temp in my Google Sidebar.?

Oh, okay - Speedfan shows 51c 49c now, and says that's hot. But it
shows my GPU at 70c and says that's hot too. I'll render a project
later and check again, but I can easily imagine pushing these babies
up 20 degrees if they were actually being used.

Oh and btw - I have one side of my case open and a small 5 desk fan
pointed at my junk. Room temp 75f.
