I tried iPhoto and think it's awful. All the pictures always
seem to remain in the library even after they are categorized.
I do edit some of the pictures, cropping and resizing (make
some for web shots, some for thumbnails for bigger links - sort
of like story boards, etc. for how I think)

I find that keeping links to all of the pictures in the main
library as well as any category to be a bit distracting.

IPhoto has a pecular mind set because it was designed for a user that
knows nothing about computers. Apple tried to make it idiot proof, but
the consequence for someone who expects a computer to act like a computer
is a tough adjustment. Foremost, iPhoto is designed so that the you can
always return to your original photo. Non-destructive editing. Tough for
those of us who cut out teeth on destructive computing. DEL *.* and all
that.

iTunes (I think), Picasa2, Adobe Lightroom, and whatever
ships with Vista all manage your images and allow limited
global editing. They do not change the underlying image
files instead they maintain a record of the edits in a
separate data base so they can be undone anytime.

At work on a managed computer, I use MS Photo Manager. It's
okay, definitely not great. I usually create smaller versions
of larger (300k+ jpg's), save the picture with a _small at the
end of the filename before the extension and then reverse the
changes so that there aren't any changes. I typically want
to keep both the original and modified images for different
uses at the same time.

Adobe Bridge (Photoshop, Elements 4 for Mac) and Organizer
(Elements 5) don't provide any image editing capability.

In addition to Adobe and Google, you might check out the
photoshop_elements list on Yahoo. They argue incessantly
about Organizer; some love it, some (like me) hate it.

Thanks for the capsule summary. I have another account on
yahoo mail where I am _way_ behind.

each other out?

The current Mac version of Photopshop Elements is Version 4. It includes
Adobe Bridge, my favorite image management program. Bridge also comes with
the PC version of Photoshop CS2 and later.

The PC Version of Elements is Version 5 and includes a function called the
Organizer that I won't even mention in my Elements class. It does not
notice any changes in your image masnagement that may have happened outside
of Organizer.

For the Mac, I suggest Elements 4 with Bridge. For the PC, you might want
to check out Picasa2 from Google. It's free.

Check www.adobe.com to see what they have in the way of trial versions.

And remember, Photoshop doesn't cost any more than a Walmart-grade deer
rifle or a Bernini sewing machine.

I forgot all about Picassa! I used that on a Linux laptop.
I thought that was terrific when compared to iPhoto. That
behaved the way I wanted iPhoto to work.

Check www.adobe.com to see what they have in the way of trial
 versions.

And remember, Photoshop doesn't cost any more than a

I don't much use for either of those.

I've been using GraphicConverter for many years (since OS9 days) to mess
with pictures. It seems to me to be very powerful and I like the way it
works.

I think they've done a great job with the software and they are very
responsive if you ever have a problem. You can try it for free and pay
for it if you think it's worth it. I did.

I also don't like the way iPhoto works. It's like iTunes in that
everything is in the library. But I guess that way of thinking is the
future to some.
