Woot.com had Refurb 30GB iPods last week for $100. You can find them on amazon for $125. I had one of those from buy.com (which owns woot) and the hold switch was broken when I got it. The battery life was very poor, too. I returned it and luckily, they were out, so they issued a refund. This let me buy a much better refurbed 80 GB from Apple for $169 (the 30 GB were $150 when I bought mine about 9 months ago, which I didn't know about until after I bought the 30 GB). * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

I've been putting together the box o'stuff/junk (as poromisde) and it's getting _heavy_. More specifically: 3 250gb SATA drives of unknown status (they may/may not work) 1 120gb IDE - Spinrite'd and wiped 3(?4?) 80gb IDE - Spinrite'd and wiped 1 30gb IDE - Spinrite'd and wiped 2 15gb IDE - 1 has been Spinrite'd and wiped, the other will be when I get back home 1 DVD reader/writer - gee, it wouldn't work with Windows98 SE who would've guessedg 1 tape drive (Hornet? TR4?) - worked last time it was used, the tapes are long gone Some of the drives are mounted in trays so they can be removed easier as in swapping OS's - yeah, I didn't do that much. I also have keys that will be accompanying the drives. I may take the drives out of the trays and see if they guys that got most/all of the other racks if they want the trays, keys and last rack. I also intend to pack the video card and floppy drive from the system that is doing the wiping along with mice, etc. When I was fooling with the individual pieces, they don't weigh much, but put them together... I'm going to have to see how much this will cost to ship before a decision gets made. I hope you understand. This is in addition to the Windows XP license (I still haven't found two, only one) that I have along with various books, etc. There's also a cordless phone that needs a battery (I didn't see one at Best Buy), there's cell phone cases (my current one) that interfere with it working for me, there's some MP3 stuff (one player working missing the battery cover, a case for a Sansa something, an offer to download some music for the Sansa since I have a Mac, it was of little use to me, I had hoped the Sansa would be a viable alternative to an iPod - it wasn't, very sad. -- Take care | This clown speaks for himself, his job doesn't Wayne D. | supply this, at least not directly Remember: COBOL can be cured if detected in early stages * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Re: [CGUYS] Ipod Touch question
In high-end audio, as far as headphones, there aren't that many players. AKG, Beyer, Denon, Grado, Sennheiser, STAX. That's basically it. I may have missed a few. Headphones are a most bang for the buck product assuming that you don't need speakers. A preamp or a dedicated headphone amp will drive headphones well. An Ipod by itself will not drive any top class headphone. Sorry, but the physics isn't there. The Ipod isn't bad but it needs help to make it happen. The earbuds that ship with an Ipod are OK for a cheap MP3 player. They are totally unacceptable for actually listening to music. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

If I have to I will. Verizon is changing the way they price plans and how the devices work on the plans. My son wanted a new phone and purchased it off Ebay. Turns out the new phone will only work with one of their new plans. (Their rules not mine) So I had to change plans, problem is I have a Motorola Q and it is a Smartphone/PDA. Cannot have a plan with Internet access while I have a Smartphone/PDA becasue they want me to buy a separate (read more costly) plan for that phone. We finally got it done, but I have to have my PDA/Smartphone as a secondary line with a lesser plan. 1.99 per megabyte downloaded. (expensive) Also I will not be able to get another smartphone/PDA without getting a Data plan (I presently do not have one.) Do not tell me to change carriers as they are the only one with the best coverage in my area. So I am seriously looking at my next phone not being a PDA, but I will need something that has a lot of what my PDA does, contacts etc. Documents the like. Re: [CGUYS] Ipod Touch question
This is one of the best reasons for ALL U.S. mobile phone carriers to switch to GSM. With Verizon and Sprint, if you change to another carrier or plan, you often must buy a new phone. When Cavan bought an iPhone from ATT, he unlocked his Sony-Ericsson phone and gave it to me to use with T-Mobile. If Verizon used GSM instead of CDMA, you could keep your phone and switch carriers, assuming that there's coverage in your area. Does your smartphone/PDA have WiFi? If not you may need a new one anyway. Are there any used ones you can get? eBay? Are there any other third party carriers that also use the Verizon network in your area? How about Alltel? Verizon owns them but has different plans. Cavan also gave me his iPod Touch when he got his iPhone to combine his phone/wifi. The Touch is terrific with WiFi, as long as there is an open network [library, schools] or one where I already have an account, like at Starbucks. I have a 1st gen Touch. The second gen Touch can get software to unlock bluetooth, and to use it as a flash drive. Do you want to have a WiFi phone? Are there enough open networks where you can use the Touch? Re: [CGUYS] Ipod Touch question
GSM down here sucks. T-Mobile, ATT and others just do not have the coverage I need. (Would be great but just not feasible.) I have looked at a few of the WIFI phones but they are not that great, and again the newer ones are fine but Verizon will require a Data [plan with the activation of any new PDA/Smartphone. That is why I am asking about an Ipod Touch. My church plus many other locations do have Wifi so it is usable for that purpose plus many of the others you mentioned. With a regular Verizon phone (one of the nicer newer ones) I would get a lot of good stuff, and not pay the extra. Re: [CGUYS] iPod Touch question
This is tricky, Betty! What they told me when I bought my iPod is that it only syncs to one computer. What that means is, anything in iTunes on the designated one computer, that is what syncs to the iPod Touch. I can download blogs to my iPod Touch through iTunes. Also sync my calendar, contacts, etc. But as far as I can tell, the iPod Touch doesn't sync in two directions -- only from the one computer to the iPod Touch. (So if you want to sync between computers, you have to somehow copy the iTunes files between computers.) From what I can gather, anything that cannot appear in iTunes -- will not appear on the iPod Touch. If you have songs, video's, whatevers, on the iPod, they will not transfer (or sync) from the iPod to the computer. It's a one way street. So you have to get whatever to install into iTunes, and then sync to the iPod Touch, to effect the transfer. Alternatively, of course, you can post the video to your website and Cavan can access it through the Touch if he has a wifi connection. As you know, I'm not much musically, so I haven't played around much with CD's, etc, as yet. But this is the case with Podcasts and talking books, etc, and I assume it's the same for anything video. Good luck!
