The 60 watt light bulb that they make a cost comparison with has a light output
in the rage of 700 lumens. It puts out a whole lot more than the 30 to 60
lumens of the 2 watt led that it is compared with. Energy saving is obtained
as much by reduced light as by increased efficency.

Most of those have lumen ratings.

I found a 1.3 watt bulb for $15.38. That might be worth it in
electrical savings alone. They didn't specify a life span but
ccranes 60,000 hours translates to 6.8 years of continuous use. I
like these things for places that are just too much of a pain to
change frequently. Nobody seems to provide a lumens rating.

Whoops here is a cheaper one. $12.95 for 0.5 watt bulb. This one is
rated at 100,000hours or 11.4 years.

New Jersey was one of the first states to encourage its residents to

fluorescent bulbs, then offering additional ones below cost. Any
indication that New Jersey or other states will have incentives to
switch to LEDs? $35 at C. Crane is prohibitive for a light bulb--I see
they have one on sale for $15.

I've been working on LED lights for outdoors, using small solar panels
with rechargeable batteries. They're fairly easy to make, especially
since they're being used for viral graffiti and instructions are online.
I haven't seen instructions for making wired LED lights for indoors yet,
but expect to see that soon in Make Magazine.

The state of NJ changed over every traffic light under their control
to LEDs. As you suggested, the cost savings in power and not having
to constantly change bulbs paid for the conversion in a year. It was
one of the very few intelligent things the state has ever done.

As the cost of LED's comes down, we are going to see more and more
use of them, where it is appropriate.

Actually the new technology is for LED bulbs. Supposedly less power
consumption and much longer life.

They replaced two traffic lights in town already with the new LED
bulbs and they are brighter and cleaner looking. Many of the top of
the line models of cars are using LED technology for taillights and
Brake lights.

Well, not too exciting; but just a little exciting.

Many years ago there was an inexpensive night-light sold that put 2
bulbs, 7 W each, in series. It still gave enough light for a
night-light, and it didn't have or need a switch. The cost of
electricity was low, and the life of the bulbs exceedingly long, so
they were on at all times and I never forgot to turn on the
night-light. Of course today we have solid state light detectors,
circuits, and light sources; so the same function is achieved and
the night-light is on only when it's dark. I don't know how the cost
and lifetimes of the old and new technologies compare.

Link for a source of LED light bulbs.
http://www.ccrane.com/lights/led-light-bulbs/index.aspx More
expensive than a Compact fluorescent was 10 years ago; But it evens
out with the cost to run them being negligible and the savings from
all the standard bulbs that don't need to be changed. Plus these are
dimmable.
