So where would you recommend buying memory, instead of getting it from
Crucial?
Crucial shows a 2GB kit (two 1GB cards) of DDR PC2-4200 memory at $89.99

I usually hunt around a litle.

I see newegg offering 1GB cards of DDR PC2-4200 memory for $30 each ($38

Re: [CGUYS] Replacing laptop memory

2007-09-10 Thread Phil Marchetti

I like www.memoryx.net they seem to have a good balance
between price and quality.

If I purchase the very cheapest memory, I find that it often
fails to work properly. Thus wasting my TIME and the time of my
customers, and I end up looking like I do not know
my profession.

If you are a reseller, or purchase RAM frequently, MemoryX
will grant you a very nice discount. I am not sure what exactly
you must do to prove your status, but I guess in my case,
they just looked at my past buying trends and allowed me to
be in that reseller category.

Here's a nice disclaimer from Tom's vendor:

FREE USPS SHIPPING: applies only to orders which are placed online.
There is no minimum order amount for the free USPS shipping. Average
delivery is 3-7 business days but this is only an average and some locations
may take longer. **If your order gets lost, there is no insurance and DMS
takes no responsibility for packages which are lost by the United States
Postal Service.**

Even funnier Tom, is that RAM for one of my home mobos is as follows:

ASUS K8V: 1 GB ECC, PC3200, 1 stick:

MemoryX: $89
DMS: $93 (Tom's vendor)
Crucial: $80

Here's another that I just bought last week:

Dell GX520, 1 GB Non-ECC, PC-4200

MemoryX: Didn't carry RAM for the very popular GX series, which is odd.
DMS: $49.50
Crucial: $42 (I get a small discount off of that price)

I guess I'll have to take back what I said about Tom's cheap-o RAM; it costs
more.

I've used Crucial for years, even in the servers I've built, in use every
day for years. Zero problems. Crucial ships by a trackable shipper,
usually UPS or FedEx.

I have an older model that I upgraded. If you have any experience
installing RAM in a computer, this is easy (esp. dissipate static first
so you don't fry it or the computer and also to know when it's in its
slot all the way - push HARD). On the PowerBook G4 models, shut it
down, lift the keyboard, install DIMM(s), put keyboard back, start it
up, check the memory and you are done.
