I've updated https://trycontra.com with what I believe is a full list of
dances that have resumed: https://trycontra.com/list

It looks like there are about 26 now.

Yes, I have talked to them, suggesting that they not allow tests as an
alternative to vaccination, and that they provide free surgical masks
(~$0.08/each) to people arriving with cloth masks.

Jeff,

Any test?
So like, someone can take the rapid test which is only about 55% accurate
when no symptoms are present? :/

Yikes.

Hopefully someone can message the Worcester orgs and suggest they tighten
up the language on that?

At least they have a mask mandate, which seems to be a big factor in
reducing transmission, assuming people don't have slipping and loose masks
or bandanas.

2021-11-05 Thread Jeff Kaufman via Contra Callers
The first Massachusetts dance to be starting up in person indoors is the
Worcester dance: https://www.worcesterdance.org/. They list:

"Documented proof of either full vaccination or a negative COVID test. The
COVID test must be taken no more than three days prior to the dance. Photos
of either vax cards or said test results will be accepted as proof.

Per City of Worcester mandate, masks are to be worn at all times by
everyone in the building.

Each attendee must provide their name, email address, and cell phone number
for contact-tracing purposes.

The gymnasium where the dance is being held is quite large for the expected
number of attendees. We will augment that by placing box fans in front of
open windows in at least two locations to provide for the circulation of
fresh air. The facility also has several ceiling fans which will assist in
that process."

2021-11-05 Thread tedsims--- via Contra Callers
In Louisville, the group that usually organizes dances has not started dancing
again so other dances have popped up to take their place.

There is a weekly dance recently on Mondays, all volunteer everything, with
donations, vaccinated only, not checked, and you have to sign a waiver. Masks
not required. Some people wear masks and some do not. 30~40 people.

There is a second dance, not the same people organizing, happening occasionally
but not on a regular basis that has been going on for months. Also vaccinated
only, and masks strongly recommended. The last one was well attended. There's
one scheduled 3rd Sat this month and the announcement says they will be
checking cards.

Between the two groups mentioned above, there will be 5 contra dances in
Louisville in November, not counting the tin-hat-crowd barn dance east of town
which has been going on monthly for more than a year, except summer.

Some people are fine dancing in a mask and some people object for various
stated reasons, obviously.

On a related note, the club salsa community in town here, which is significant,
has been dancing business-as-usual for most of the year. Ditto the west coast
swing crowd.

I am not personally aware of any dancing related breakouts.

[Callers] Re: Does anybody know of active vaccinated-only, in-person contra dances?

2021-10-21 Thread Martha Edwards via Contra Callers
Here in St Louis, we've had a small handful of dances - outdoors in a city
park, live music, open calling, proof of vaccination required, with a
signup sheet provided in case we hear of anyone getting sick (so we can
notify all the others who attended).

The dances have only a small percentage of our regular dances, but everyone
is SO HAPPY to see their friends, to chat, to hug -- and dance!

We won't be able to keep them up much longer - outdoors starts to get
pretty cold here soon. If we can find an indoor space with good
ventilation, we could probably continue getting together, but otherwise, we
will probably try to figure out how to make "pod dancing" work - that is,
dancing at home with a small group of clearly vaccinated and boostered
friends. If we could get a handful of "pod groups" to broadcast on Zoom, we
might even start thinking they're fun!

also hear current news and perspectives from a public health professor, Dr.

2021-10-15 Thread Jonathan Sivier via Contra Callers

Our local contra dance group has not started dancing again. In June and early July we were
discussing starting again in the fall and trying to figure out how that would work. It was likely
going to be for vaccinated only, but wearing masks seems less useful when you are in physical
contact with a large group of people. However, the Delta surge has made us put all these plans on
hold. I'm not sure what conditions will need to be in order to start up again. Certainly I think
we would want to wait until the transmission level is below "High". Whether we need to
wait for it to be "Low" I don't know.

However, our local English group did hold 3 dances in the late spring and
summer. These were for fully vaccinated dancers (and band members). They were
held outdoors and everyone wore masks (except the woodwind player in the band).
Under those circumstances we felt comfortable enough to do some dancing. We
didn't have any negative occurrences. We didn't specifically slow things down
due to masks, but we did go a bit slower since it had been over a year since
any of us had been dancing. Whether that made a difference with the masks or
not I can't say.

Hi caller friends,

I’m the president of Toronto Contra Dance and we’re about to survey our
membership about when they’ll feel ready to return to in-person dancing, and
under what circumstances. We’re expecting that at first dances will be
vaccinated-only spaces, probably with masks required. But it would be very
useful to us if we knew of other dance organizations that had already begun
vaccinated-only dances, so we could learn how that’s going. (Do they require
masks? Can people enjoy the dance with masks? Has anyone gotten sick? What

I had hoped CDSS would be monitoring back-to-in-person dances to inform the
rest of us how those ventures are going, but as far as I can tell, they’re not
doing that.

Any information anyone can provide would be most appreciated! Back-channel
messages welcome! If I’m re-inventing the wheel here, please put me in touch
with whatever group is looking into this!

Thanks!

2021-10-15 Thread Marie-Michèle Fournier via Contra Callers
Make sure you contact public health to know what's allowed. I believe in
Quebec the rules are max 25 people in the room, masked, 2 meters between
couples. At least that's how the only event I'm aware of operates (West
Coast Swing, not contra). Rules are likely different in Ontario but it's
worth checking.
As you can imagine, contra is not possible under the Quebec rules and we
would lose too much money with only 25 people anyway so we'll wait until
the rules are more appropriate
