I will run menudrake so it creates the dups and then send you the contents of
/etc/menu.

Okay. This was an upgrade from 9.1. Could somehow the leftover configuration
from 9.1 be causing a problem.

I will do a fresh install of 9.2 the upgrade to Cooker tonight and see if I
get the problem on a clean install.

The two menu entries added in the last package of fluxbox added the menu entries
to all of the wm menus, not just fluxbox. So for instance, Fluxbox = run was
showing up in KDE.

Caused by entries in fluxbox-menu patch defined needs as x11 instead of fluxbox.
Here is a patch to fix.

When drakclub is run from the command line, it prints the machine root password
in the console after it is entered in the gui with *. Here is the output of my
console. (Don't worry, I changed the characters of the password.)

$ drakclub
##
6 ##
Password: hgj6873f

added medium club.comm_i586_9.2

I believe that the password should not be output to the console, this is a
security breach.

[Cooker] [Bug 6074] [drakxtools] Mandrake Control Center cannot setup Samba Mount Points

2003-10-12 Thread [cybercfo]
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=6074

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-13-10 05:16 ---
I ran into thiws problem today when I urpmi'd a 9.1 install to cooker. I
could not mount any of my samba shares until I uninstalled and then
reinstalled samba-client.

Before I tried the uninstall and reinstall, I did the same and went to the
control center to see what was up. I got the same error the OP did.

and it goes to a dialog that says Mandatory samba-client package not
installed. I opened up a terminal and su'd to root and typed urpmi
samba-client. Urpmi responded with Everyting already installed.

So,
1) MCC does not know samba-client is installed
2) Despite asking about it, MCC will not install the package.

I think this may be because the binary of the samba client name changed. In 9.1
I believe it was smbmount. I don't remember exactly what gets installed in 9.2,
but I think the name changed. So the tool might need to be updated for this.
Just perahps a place to start looking.

I marked this as critical, because the networking aspects of the distribution
have always been touted and I think it's important that this gets fixed.

I installed Mdk 9.2 RC1, and during the installation I set up the connection

time and tried to enter some page with konqueror, it failed. I tried ping
10.1.1.1 from the konsole and it said something like connect: no buffer
available. I ran control center and then the internet connection wizard, and
clicked on the top button (change computer name, or sth like that). And I saw
there that dns was set to 127.0.0.1. When I set it back to 10.1.1.1 the
connection was established. But why did it change at all?

Both KDE and GNOME seem to be having trouble with Galaxy tightvnc-server-1.2.7-2. It
seems to be focused on Galaxy-KDE as explained later.

Fluxbox works just fine, just GNOME and KDE have exhibited issues.

KDE loads the wallpaper and then various components seem to go flashing by like a grey
bar where the kicker is supposed to be. Eventually ending up with a screen shot like
this.

http://www.gkmweb.com/images/9.1-KDE_vnc.jpg

The desktop keeps flashing periodically.

GNOME has a similar behavior in that it flashes, but the desktop seems to load.
Occasionally after one of the flashes, an error message pops up a dialogue box that
says KDesktop error. Sorry, i was not able to capture it.

I thought maybe the Galaxy theme had something to do with it, so I switched KDE to the
Keramik theme, and it still exhibited this behavior, although the the error message
and the flashing stopped occurring when GNOME was running. So maybe it does belong to
Galaxy, and that led me to post it here as a KDE-Galaxy bug.

vnc logs have nothing interesting in them and the system logs are equally bare on this
issue.

What else can I do to help troubleshoot?

I tried doing an install tonight from my local cooker mirror using hd.img and my
usb keyboard and mouse were not recognized by the installer.

I plugged in a standard ps/2 keyboard at the same time, and was able to load the
installer. Once the installer was running, the usb keyboard and mouse were
detected and activated eventually.

I have a KT-400 based board. I am currently downloading rc2 and will test to
see if this bug exists in a cd install.

Okay I tried again with a ps/2 keyboard plugged in as well as the usb keyboard.
Strangely enough, with the ps/2 keyboard plugged in, the usb keyboard worked. I
rebooted into the installer again with the usb keyboard only and it did not
work. I did not see any kernel message sin the console. I am thinking that
this is before the kernel usb interface is loaded as my mouse is not lit up yet
and it would be relying on the BIOS usb keyboard support. My BIOS is set to USB
keyboard support on, so I am not sure what is going on here. Anything else I
can do here to help troubleshoot?

rc-1 updated to latest cooker 2003-8-31. Kernel 2.4.22-3mdk

This bug is still valid. There is no bootsplash when running in vga=791 and
there is no background image on the console screens at this fb resolution.

In 9.2 beta2, when I ran Drakconnect and selected expert mode on the first
screen, I expected that, as in the past, all of the advanced options would be
displayed to me on every screen. Instead I had to still click an advanced
button on each subsequent screen to see the advanced/expert configuration
options.

The expected behavior would be to either have the expert choice at the beginning
screen default all subsequent screens to expert, or get rid of the expert
checkbox on the first screen, and require the advanced button be clicked on
every screen.

If my opinion counts, I think the first option is much more useable.

[Cooker] [Bug 2155] [Installation] 9.1 RC1 RC2 DMA disabled ???

http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2155

This bug should be marked invalid because dma has been turned off on *all*
optical drives as a feature. See the comments in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit. Use
/etc/sysconfig/harddisks file to override.

Although, I suppose it could be possible to re-think that decision and perhaps
try to probe the drive and only turn dma off on drives that are known to
cause problems.

Did you regenerate your initrd to use the fb in 1024x768? What command
syntax?

Why should I have to regenerate my initrd to change fb modes? Shouldn't it
work out of the box?

I can confirm here. This only happens when running printerdrake in embedded

error. I launched MCC from command line to look for output when printerdrake
exhibits error, but no output is generated.

Okay, I first ran mkinitrd and it did nothing. I lost my bootsplash image for
all modes. I then set image size explicitly in /etc/sysconfig/bootsplash to
1024x768 and reran mkinitrd. I have my images back.

I am going to close this bug as invalid, as the problem is not what I had
originally reported, but it would seem to me that I should be able to change
vga vesafb mode without having to run mkinitrd each time. What is a newbie to
do?

thought of using drakboot, but seeing nothing there I ran mkinitrd manually.

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-28-08 17:28 ---
I'd like to re-open this bug because I note two behaviors that are related to
it.

1) The version of drakconnect in the installer of rc1 exhibits the original
behavior;

2) when selecting the expert checkbox on the version of drakconnect in rc1, all
of the advanced options are shown as default, which is correct. However, the
button to remove the advanced choices and return to basic mode on each screen
still says advanced. If I click the button and return to basic mode, the
advanced choices disappear as they should and the button still says advanced, as
it should. If I click the button again to show the advanced choices, the button
now properly says basic I have provided links to screenshots to illustrate.

Screenshot 1 is the first screen with advanced choices as it comes up when
running in expert mode. Note the button in the lower left says advanced, I
believe this should say basic, because I am already in the advanced choices.

Screenshot 2 is the first screen after clicking the advanced button. The
advanced choices disappear and the button properly displays advanced.

Screenshot 3 is the same screen after having clicked the advanced button again.
The advanced choices are now displayed and the button properly says basic

If my opinion counts, I think the first option is much more useable.

KDE loads the wallpaper and then various components seem to go flashing by like a grey

this.

http://www.gkmweb.com/images/9.1-KDE_vnc.jpg

It looks like the cause of this was not Galaxy, but the patch16 applied for
libqt3-3.1.1-13mdk. I rebuilt the src.rpm with the specfile for -12mdk in cvs and
the problem has gone away. KDE and KDE apps run fine in vnc. I have not
tested Xnest, perhaps someone can do that and report here, but I assume it will
be fine.

The patched turned on Xft and AA by default. This change required the render
extension on the Xserver, which vnc and xnest do not provide. Can this be fixed
without turning off default AA?

I wonder if just making the QT_XFT environment variable false will solve the

I should reinstall libqt3-3.1.1-13mdk and try export QT_XFT=no and see what

I have multiple KDE desktops, each configured with different wallpaper settings. If I
switch
between them, the wallpaper does not change, but any apps with software transparency
(i.e.

This is easily repeatable and I can easily repeat this on any machine.

My ~/.i18n looks like this:

$ cat ~/.i18n
LC_TELEPHONE=en_US
LC_PAPER=en_US
LC_NAME=en_US

This gives me english interface and units for everything, but allows the japanese
input method
(kinput2) to work (it also breaks handling in KDE for the multi_key, but that's
another story!)

Anyway, with this ~/.i18n, switching between desktops doesn't change the background
wallpaper. It's really annoying.

However, if I switch my ~/.i18n back to the following, it magically works again (but
of course,
now I can't enter japanese, which is a big problem!)

$ cp ~/.i18n-en ~/.i18n

I do agree with this, and I tried to fight for it, but I obviously lost this
battle. If you want the old display manager back, as well as the old
functionality,

urpme mdkkdm

and then

urpmi kdebase-kdm

this is what I did.

Hate to say this but we are just too stupid to know how to manage our
own networks... we should be grateful for the way we are being managed
and not allowed to make what are mistakes that we as mear users are too
 uniformed and incompetent to handle.

Just use the original kdm like the rest of us instead of bitching about
something you know nothing about. None of us were in the meeting where it
was decided to remove this function, so we don't know why.

urpme mdkkdm

urpmi kdebase-kdm

problem solved

This is already done but was not including unconfirmed reports, so ten people
could come and report a bug and if no one confirmed it, the automatic query
would not list the bug. Of course lot's of people don't review the results
of the automatic query either.

This still is a problem and what would seem like a dealbreaker. Not only will KDE
apps not run in vncserver, but kde apps won'r run under a different window manager.
It's going to be a real problem for me to not be able to run Konq and kmail in my
fluxbox session through vnc.

Does this have a workaround? Is it an XFree or a KDE bug? What can I do to help
debug the source of the problem? This is a very big bug.

[Cooker] [Bug 1988] [Installation] Upgrade path did not upgrade kernel

Do the generic entries for vmlinuz and initrd point to the new kernel?

When I upgrade the kernel on my computer, the symlinks for vmlinuz, initrd.img
and system.map are set as the defaults. When I upgrade, they are always
pointed to the new kernel and an entry is made in lilo.conf for the old
kernel. This way, I never have to change the default entry, it automatically
points to the newer kernel.

KDE loads the wallpaper and then various components seem to go flashing by like a grey

GNOME has a similar behavior in that it flashes, but the desktop seems to load.
Occasionally after one of the flashes, an error message pops up a dialogue box that

I thought maybe the Galaxy theme had something to do with it, so I switched KDE to the

If you are seeing the standard Mandrake wallpaper, you are not actually using
fluxbox. If you were running fluxbox, you'd see this in your vncviewer:

Make sure your ~/.desktop file is set to fluxbox

Yes. Why is it not possible to use the default background that is already
installed. Or does fluxbox need to carry it's own default background in case
KDE or GNOME is not installed?

vncserver on linux runs on a seperate xserver, so it does not work like in
windows where you can see the same desktop remotely as you do locally.

Your local display is :0 and your vnc display should be :1

What user did you start vncserver as? possibly root? Check /root/.desktop
file or /etc/sysconfig/desktop.

If you are seeing the default Mandrake wallpaper, you are not running fluxbox
in vnc. If you don't see any functional desktop at all, most likely you are
running KDE in your vncserver and are experiencing the same bug as the rest
of us.

While adding, removing, or updating sources in the software updater, the CD-ROM
drive is frequently checked. If the CD-ROM is empty and supermount is enabled,
the CD is tested and takes approximately 1-2 minutes to be recognized as empty
before the software manager continues. This can be observed on the CD drive
from the light. When this situation occurs, the Software Manager appears to the
user to have locked up and becomes unresponsive.

The temporary workaround is to have a CD (any CD, including an audio CD, which
is what I do) in the drive. The seek on the drive will drp to 1-2 seconds and
the software manager will appear to work.

I'm not sure where the specific problem lies, but I think it may have to do with
the fact that when adding or removing sources (urmpi), all of the currently
defined sources appear to be checked. In reality, adding or removing should not
check everything else, simply add or remove.

GNOME seems to be okay now. Trying to start any KDE app from the GNOME terminal
is a bust. Grey window flashes by. Perhaps not a Galaxy error now, but
others have reported problems with KDE under vnc and xnest.

If it were an Xserver issue, why would only KDE be affected? Unless KDE is
using a function of the server that noone else is.

It doesn't seem to be the theme after all, but it does not just affect vnc.

I recall it did work a few weeks ago.

[Cooker] [Bug 2965] [arts] No real-time priority for sound process

artswrapper does not install as suid root, which I believe is on purpose in
mdk. kde/arts team intended for artswrapper to run suid root to enable
real-time processing, but this is also a security risk. I think this is not
a bug but a feature.

The artsd process cannot be lanched with real-time priority (nice level always
at 0 even if you set real-time in the KDE config module). The consequence is
that the sound is cut and hashed when you move a window, open a program, or
anything that use CPU ressources (even if not 100% of your CPU is used - I have
this problem on a PIII866 with 256Mo RAM...)

This is a feature, not a bug. It is very bad practice to log in as root and
this feature discourages the practice. Log in as user and use su or sudo to
execute the commands you need to run as root. If you insist on running the
gui as root, you have three options:

1) remove mdkkdm and install kdebase-kdm to restore the kde display manager
which allows this;

2) set root to show on the list in the kde control center;

3) set all users to no-show in the kde control center, thus requiring the
typing in of all user names.

Yes, I meant update to the latest dhcp-client, but you need
dhcp-client-3.0-2pl2.5mdk.i586.rpm from a cooker mirror. This is the fix.

When I upgraded to 9.1beta from 9.0, XFree86 (I think) began blanking teh
screen on me at intervals which seem random. It goes blank for less than a
second, more than once a minute.

When 9.1rc1 came out, I upgraded but the problem remained - had to reformat /
and /usr, if that matters. I *had* to reformat, because tehre was no upgrade
or upgrade packages only option, like there was when I upgraded from 8.2 to
9.0.

When 9.1rc2 came out I upgraded again but the problem remained, and, even
worse, now I have no Inet connection on that box. I load the Control Center
and click Network and Internet and it's still configured for my DFE-530TX NIC
(which uses the 8139too alias).

I click Connect and it says connecting to the internet ... but then it
says connection failed.

I can boot [Ugh!] Win98 and there is no problem.

I can open a konsole window and I can ping 12.223.2.8 or 12.223.2.9 just fine,
but I can't ping insightbb.com. That's odd because 12.223.2.89 are the IPs
insight uses to register NICs with their service. In fact I can type
12.223.2.8 in a konqueror window and I get the standard You are currently
subscribed to insightBB.com. Your account is active.

Of course insight's tech support is useless, as they say they don't support
linux, and indeed, I can GET connected just fine running Winduhs.

I am at a loss.

What version of dhcp-client are you on? The one that came with rc2?
dhcp-client-3.0-2pl2.5mdk.i586.rpm is supposed to fix this. Update and try again.
