Except if you use their .patch.rpms:

RPM XFree86 4.3.0.1 (i586) 9938 kB
Patch-RPM XFree86 4.3.0.1-patch (i586)344 kB
At present we make huge updates (ie the kdebase one) for really small
fixes (I'm guess a less than 5 kB source patch) which result in really
minimal changes to the files distributed (I'm guessing less than 10kB),
but we distribute full new versions of all subpackages ...
There must be a better way ...

the problem is that rpm does not support the concept of patches, i
believe suse solution would result in rpm -V saying that files were
modified.
we could try producing xdeltas of fixed rpms and have urpmi ask for the
original cd to produce the fixed rpm
a better solution would be being able to modify rpm to allow patches to
be applied.

[Cooker] [9.2] The Windows widow shows wrongly 9.1 !

2003-10-28 Thread Eric Fernandez
When you insert the CD 1 of download edition (not tried with the
powerpack) under Windows, the Welcome window shows 9.1 instead of 9.2.
It is such details that make people say the distribution is rushed and
not polished...

Polishing is VERY important, and Mandrake should take care of it for the
next distribution. Having a nice, clean Desktop at start, with a
complete K bar would be nice, not two small icons (I signaled it on
Bugzilla that icons should be in medium size at start.

Anyway, since you are going to remaster the 9.2, please correct the
wrong 9.1 Window title under Windows.

Eric

Yes, for an operating system that is intended to remove the need for
Windows, the most critical feature is the version number on the software
which you should never need to use after installing it.

Maybe next time we should rather fix that than worrying about newer
packages, fixing bugs etc?
/sarcasm

MS spent about a month replacing all the graphics in Windows 2003
(Windows .Net - Windows 2003). Does that make Windows 2003 any better?

I get your point, but having these kind of mistakes is really annoing,
it gives a bad impression that not everything is polished although 9.2
should be the most stable !

And tho add to this : the huge amount of updates is another info about
9.2 not ready to be released

It has been hold by Mandrakesoft for 3 weeks before been released, so
why are there still so many (maybe tiny but ...) bugs ?

Stef, trying to find a better way to be helpful.

Buchan, I think you missed my point. I do not consider that version
number the most important thing in the distribution, and I appreciate
and recognise the quality of the work that everyone does here. If I
criticise Mandrake here, it is because I love it !
I can understand that people who are disturbed by the fact they insert
the CD and read and mismatching version number. And yes this kind of
error has to be corrected, since it hurts Mandrake when you read a
review that will use the same sarcasm mode in his text about rushing
the release.

An advice : remove completely that version number in the window title.
It is not necessary, and will prevent any error in the future.

For Stephane : I disagree there are a lot of bugs in the distro. The
fact that the updates are big in size does not mean there are a lot of
bugs. You may correct one little bug in KDe and anyway have to release
100MB of updated rpm.

There is already 50 MB of updates for SuSE 9.0 and
it's not even released yet

May be i've been too strong with 'many' but actually updates are : 259M
which is quite big for a 'stable' version.

I'm contributing also to translation in French and i found many tiny
bugs ... not very important in reality, but annoying, like milsleading
translations in urpmi manual page, ...

This is good, not because they were there, but because they are no
longer.
