OK. I found a problem in my /etc/lilo.conf that could explain mkinitrd
not working on my system.
I am using 3 HD, one is a removable (extractable) disk with windows OS.
This unit was declared as
disk = /dev/hde bios=0x82
in /etc/lilo.conf file

When the extractible disk is not present /sbin/lilo would fail.
So I had to remove this line and /sbin/lilo ran just fine.

After a number of PC boot with the latest kernel cooker I do not have any more
problem at boot up.

However I would like to report again the problem when performing RPM, there is
an error message telling that I do not have mdk initrd on my machine, which is
not correct, as I do have it. I had to run manually initrd in order to make an
initrd.img image file for the boot. This appeared with 9.1 release. I can see
that mke2fs is not run by rpm of the kernel rpm file as it was twice with 9.0
distro.

With latest kernel 2.4.21.0.pre4.1mdk-1-1mdk I can now boot (almost) normally.
With pre2 and pre3 it *always* locked on my machine.
So for now on, it's much better !
But sometimes, booting will still stop at message :
chargement du affectation clavier fr-latin 1 :-(

Thierry.

PS:
and chargement du affectation clavier fr-latin 1 is bad french :-D

I am sorry but there is no change with kernel version 2.4.21pre4-1mdk.
I still experience boot stopped at the middle of the same line very frequently.
When this happens if I push any keyboard key it is displayed on the console.
No key combination can reboot. But if I press Ctl+C then keyboard is locked.
I have to perform a hard reset.

1. you can avoid hard reseting the machine by pressing the following keys
- ALT+SYS+s (emergency sync)
- ALT+SYS+u (emergency remount R/O)
- ALT+SYS+b (emergency reboot)

2. It would be usefull if you have another pcs to send the console output of the boot
on a serial port and capture it with a terminal emulator (like minicom) on the second
pc
to redirect the console at boot, you must add the following to your lilo append= line:
console=ttyS0,9600

then when the boot seems to be hung type ALT+SYS+T to get a task list
before reseting the PC as said in 1

I removed the USB devices and booted eight times in a row, but couldn't
reproduce the bug. However, I do not suspect it has anything to do with USB
devices, as the bug appears quite infrequently on this computer (maybe twice
during the last month, and I boot at least daily), and as said, the other
computer with the bug does not have any USB devices attached.
