Eureka!

apmd seems to be the source of the problem. Redid the install again with kde
environment and console tools. Did not get apmd installed ( which group on the
install selects that? ).

Without apmd running my laptop suspends ( or indicates so by the crescent on the
thinkpad ) and resumes better, no power indication in kde of course...

Perhaps a bad interaction between the kernel and APM?

is it possible that with this install you enabled ACPI, whereas it was disabled
previously?

Pretty sure I didn't enable ACPI. acpid is not installed and acpi
setting is acpi=ht in lilo. As far as as I can tell linux dosn't
support ACPI completely on thinkpads...

APM is the only thing that works (worked?) on the ThinkPad.

This looks like it is fixed with the latest cooker kernel 2.4.22-8mdk!

Don't change anything! ;-)

I know there are others who have seen the same problems on suspend. Give it a try.

But this now works for me!

Looks like an issue with the removal of modules from the running kernel.

I hand ran the network portion of the network suspend script and I stopped the
network and shutdown any service that could even possibly use the network then
did the /sbin/modprobe -r eepro100 then I started seeing the following in the log:

/etc/hotplug/net.agent: NET unregister event not supported
unregister_netdevice: waiting for eth0 to become free. Usage count = 2.

This is really kind of important for laptop users or those who have their
machines set to sleep during periods of inactivity.

When the machine is opened the screen is garbled and the keyboard is dead.
Power cycling the machine is the only option.

If the machine is started *without* the network attached then suspend/resume
works fine. After the first suspend/resume you can connect the network cable
and then suspend/resume with no problems.

More interesting items since I didn't get X installed with latest cooker. I
tried to suspend my machie sans X and what I see running on the console is a
constant

unregister_netdevice: waiting for eth0 to becomre free. Usage count=2

9.1 works fine on this machine.

On a ThinkPad A22p with the builtin ethernet card there is an issue with susped
/ resume if the machine is started with the network attached.

This is with acpi set to ht.

When the machine suspends with the network attached it takes about a minute to
go through it's operations then the machine emits a single low beep and does not
suspend ( to ram ). This is what shows in messages:
