Re: [Coworking] How to manage Internet Bandwidth Usage for Power Users

2016-07-15 Thread Alex Hillman
+1 to James' approach, we've been down this road as well and having a
conversation has always worked better than any kind of "prevention" based
approach.

Another option we haven't taken (but would consider if it came down to it)
would be to add a dedicated "high usage" connection that people can plug
into using ethernet instead of wifi to ensure they're connected to the
right system during specific high bandwidth needs operations.

Personally, I'd look for ways to tie usage of that service to other
behaviors, similar to how placing a kitchen or bathrooms can influence how
people move through the space, or how mixing full time and flex desks can
encourage more mixing and meeting new people. Turn a problem into a
solution :)

What i’ve done (similar scenario) is to politely ask the people who are video
editing to do it after peak hours, or over lunch. They’ve all been super nice
and understanding, and complaints more or less stopped.

The other thing you can do (I believe) is bandwidth limit specific users in the
Unifi, so most people won’t notice. But in general, you need to solve this
people problem with people, not tech.

[Coworking] How to manage Internet Bandwidth Usage for Power Users

2016-07-15 Thread JE J
Hi all,
I'd be interested in hearing how others manage Internet Bandwidth usage for
power users. Specifically users who do heavy downloading and uploading of
large files, or video editing that takes up a significant amount of
bandwidth. We have a number of users who fall into this category and can
use almost 100% of the 20M of upload bandwidth available as an example. We
currently use Unifi and have bandwidth limits in place, however there are
complaints about slow internet speeds as a result. I'd be interested in any
feedback.

[Coworking] Re: Coworking in Missoula, Montana

2016-07-15 Thread Jenn Ellington
Hi Steve-

My name is Jennifer Ellington. I work for Steelcase, an office furniture
manufacturing company. I moved to Missoula around 2 years ago and am now a
distributed worker. I am struggling with finding appropriate places in
Missoula to work. Coffee shops, though there are many, are very loud and
it is difficult to conduct meetings. I have also explore the thinking
around creating a WorkCafe here in Missoula. Steelcase has done a lot of
research around creating great spaces for wherever work happens. Employee
engagement is tied very closely to the environments which people work in.
People need choice and control over how and where they work. Working from
home works well at times, but there is a need to find a local location
where one could go to be amongst their community in an environment that
supports the Corporate worker. A WorkCafe could offer a place where people
could come that offered different settings supporting different modes of
work. There are excellent examples of these types of places in Seattle,
Chicago, NY, San Fran, LA and Grand Rapids, Michigan. What are your
thoughts?

Very Interested-
Jenn

Re: [Coworking] How to Staff the Door During Business Hours

2016-07-15 Thread Amy King
Thanks Alex! The 2 floor building is approx 55k sf, which includes retail
and 12 residential lofts. The coworking footprint is about 60% of the first
floor, around 12-14k sf. We have two entrances for members - a front
reception entrance and the rear entrance that accesses the parking lot.
