[Coworking] Dallas coworking - any plans?
I have read several plans for new Dallas coworking spaces. Are any in the works or already opened and just havent made top search results? I would be very interested in at least creating a Meetup and seeing where we can take it. I agree with Alex from Indy Hall that community is first then space comes second so I am taking that approach. I even have a space that I think a deal could be worked out with as a group if we get enough interested parties. Let me know! [Coworking] Dallas/Ft. Worth coworking - Why not?
Hi all! I have posted a few times but mainly have been listening over the last 6 months (I don't like the term "lurking" brings up too many stalker- esque connotations :) Anyways, I would like to get a read from the group at large on why you think that a metroplex like Dallas/Ft. Worth does not have more coworking spaces? Here is a list of the ones I have found locally: 1. Company Dallas - Basically, just a cube farm and some offices. The guy was very nice but it looks and feels like a basic office. Just checked for this posting and they are closing their doors due to their parent company lease expiring. (www.companydallas.com) 2. Workhaus - Cool concept and I really liked the vibe but it was pretty small and no real any community that I could see from my few visits there (to be fair it was the middle of the week and the folks there looked busy and were rocking to their iPods). From listening to the video interview on the website the founder was really looking for a way to reduce overhead from having an office more so than establishing a full coworking community. Coworking seemed to be a vehicle to defray costs while still maintaining a physical presence for the company. (www.workhauslodge.com) 3. CoHabitat - This is the closest thing to what I was expecting from reading this group's postings and researching other spaces on the web. Biggest draw back is that it is located all the way downtown which is not easy to get to unless you live in the area. The staff was very nice and accomodating and it is apparent that they are trying to establish a full blown coworking ecosystem. (http://cohabitat.us/ dallas/) There might be others but none that I can easily find. Population wise the DFW metroplex is Top 10 in the US and either #1 or #2 in Texas (either right above or below Houston) and there are tons of tech companies and a vibrant art community (web designers, commerical artists, ect) Do you think it is just lack of interest/focus? Is it due to the distributed nature of the metroplex? (6.4M people is alot of folks but they are spread over a very large area and not concentrated like in a New York or LA) I would love to see an IndyHall, CoLoft or Cohere type space come to Dallas!! So Alex or Angel - You want to come south for the winter? :) I will pre-pay! Any input is welcome! Thanks! [Coworking] Re: Coworking in Northern Texas
Hey chris - i think Dallas is ripe for more coworking spaces. Dallas proper has only 3 spaces total. The ones that are here are either not very social or not close enough for me to use. I live in Plano. Where is your space? Is it already built out? I would be interested but i am not sure about $275/mo. I have an office but it is out in the mid-cities and is 40 mins one way for me. Plus i have a stay at home wife and 2 small children so working from home is hard from a focused effort standpoint. Would love to come out when you open and check out the space! [Coworking] Twist on Coworking
Hello all! I have been reading the posts on this group for some time and I have been inspired by the stories shared. I wanted to ask some advice regarding a twist on coworking that I have been considering getting started here in Dallas. It seems that most of the coworking spaces here locally in DFW (which are very few by the way) or across the country mainly focus on startups, web dev, architects, ect. but very few offer an experience tailored for the mobile sales worker. I have been a remote employee for most of my 10 years in sales and I can tell you from experience that many of the challenges expressed by other coworkers on this board are very similar to the ones remote sales/ account reps face. Challenges like: 1. Feeling disconnected (hard to feel like your part of something that is spread over the globe!) 2. Lack of inspirational work space (cubes suck!) 3. Need for a quite space to work/focus (Kids and dogs are great but they dont help you get work done!) 4. Work along side people you would not normally meet/work with (My best ideas have come when talking to someone outside my industry) 5. Meeting with local coworkers in a cool space that doesnt cost an arm and a leg (Coffee shops, restaurant and hotels are not ideal for this but really all that is available normally) Some of the main issues that I am facing when I am map this out in my mind are: 1. Noise (sales people talk - alot) 2. Competition (Most folks are respectful but what about the ones that aren't?) 3. Value (coworking is based on a "better together" type attitude it seems...can that translate into this model?) I know a space like this would be a god send to people like me (2 kids, 1 dog and no real office in the house). Does anyone have thoughts around this? All perspective are welcome! Thanks!
