[cross-project-issues-dev] Can DTP join EGit in Oxygen.2 respin?

2017-12-14 Thread Konstantin Komissarchik
Could someone forward this to the Planning Council, please?

I am currently working with Nick Boldt to transition DTP releng responsibility.
In the meantime, the version of DTP in Oxygen.2 has compatibility issues. It
was last build with Oxygen.0.M4 and platform made an API change after that
which broke some of the DTP functionality. The 1.14.1 release that contains the
fix is ready to go. Since EGit has initiated a respin, would it be possible for
DTP to join. The change is low risk. Basically changing package names for a
class that now must be found in a different plugin and corresponding version
updates.

Re: [cross-project-issues-dev] DTP in Oxygen.2 and beyond

2017-12-14 Thread Konstantin Komissarchik
Brian,

Are you going to try to contribute DTP 1.14.1 to Oxygen.2? I think EGit is
about to request a respin, so there might be an opening to fit it in. It would
be better than staying with the version that’s known to be broken until
Oxygen.3.

Thanks,

Subject: [cross-project-issues-dev] DTP in Oxygen.2 and beyond

Currently, DTP contributes version 1.14 to the aggregation, which actually has
compile time errors against the Oxygen platform. The contributed build was
produced for Oxygen M4. It appears that some time after that, a breaking change
was made in the platform, but the major version of the bundle in question was
not incremented. So aggregation wasn’t blocked requiring action from DTP, but
presumably some subset of DTP functionality has not functioned as of Oxygen.
Aleksandar Kurtakov did find and report the issue in May [1], but as folks
probably know, DTP isn’t actively staffed by anyone, so non-blocking issues
aren’t likely to get the time of day from anyone.
That’s enough history. I spent some time today to prepare a DTP 1.14.1 build
that addresses this issue, but I don’t have the time to test this build or to
shepherd the change into aggregation. Frankly, I can’t even tell you what
functionality is currently broken. DTP is a large functional area and I am not
an expert. I only got involved to unjam the last aggregation issue.

So, if someone is interested in testing DTP 1.14.1 and shepherding it into
Oxygen.2 or another release, I will make a build available shortly.

Thanks,

- Konstantin

It makes the bug a bit less severe but it should still be fixed for 4.7.2.
The error message is not good enough for affected people to figure out
what's going on and in most cases they do not have the power to apply the
suggested workaround.

Thomas found out that the repo
http://git.eclipse.org/gitroot/jdt/eclipse.jdt.core.git has two tags that
differ only by case:
refs/tags/Cheetah
refs/tags/cheetah
which seems to cause this issue on case-insensitive filesystems.

Creating multiple refs only differing in case isn't fully portable, on
case-insensitive filesystems
this may lead to problems.

In eclipse.jdt.core.git rename or delete one of those tags, this should
fix the problem for this repository.

There is probably room to improve the current behaviour of jgit. Though I
think the fact that this problem
is caused by two refs which only differ in case reduces the severity of
the issue considerably.

This problem is tracked in
https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=528497
