I only posted this so we could watch and see if CBS was
stupid enough to walk into this trap even with the "warning" from Insight. Given
CBS's track record, anything anti-Bush from them, truthful or not,. will be
considered a "hit" piece, They brought it on themselves.

  CBS Planning Another
  Anti-Bush Hit Job?By
  Cliff Kincaid The CBS
scandal gets worse every day. Now, in an amazing twist, Michael Isikoff of
Newsweek was on Chris Matthews' MSNBC "Hardball" show last Wednesday night
claiming that CBS had been planning to air a story about the White House
using forged documents to make the case for war against Iraq.CBS,
reportedly, postponed the story so it could go on the air attacking
President Bush on the National Guard issue. It backfired when 60 Minutes
itself got caught using forged documents. Still, Isikoff indicates that 60
Minutes is planning to air the anti-Bush piece, perhaps as early as Sunday
night, September 26. here is only one big problem-the anti-Bush
story, as described by Isikoff and eagerly embraced by Democrat partisan
Matthews, is completely false. It's as phony as those National Guard
documents. The Iraq-uranium link, the subject of much media
misinformation, has been documented and confirmed by authoritative reports
from Britain's Lord Butler, who had been a cabinet secretary under five
different Prime Ministers, and the Senate Intelligence
Committee. In an article on the Newsweek
website, Isikoff claims that 60 Minutes had originally planned to run a
story about "how the U.S. government was snookered by forged documents
purporting to show Iraqi efforts to purchase uranium from
Niger."Isikoff says the story, narrated by CBS correspondent Ed
Bradley, "asked tough questions about how the White House came to embrace
the fraudulent documents and why administration officials chose to include
a 16-word reference to the questionable uranium purchase in President
Bush's 2003 State of the Union."Isikoff says 60 Minutes has been
working on the story for more than six months. It is amazing that,
18 months after Bush uttered those 16 words, Isikoff, 60 Minutes, and
Chris Matthews still can't or won't get the story straight.
Bush's famous 16 words were: "The British Government has learned
that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from
Africa." Bush never said that Saddam "purchased" uranium. While
the Bush administration mishandled the controversy under a media assault
and even backed away from what the President said, subsequent
investigations confirm that Saddam Hussein was seeking uranium from
  Africa.Lord Butler's July 14, 2004, report called Bush's words
"well-founded." It reported that,"a) It is accepted by all parties
that Iraqi officials visited Niger in 1999."b) The British
Government had intelligence from several different sources indicating that
this visit was for the purpose of acquiring uranium. Since uranium
constitutes almost three-quarters of Niger's exports, the intelligence was
credible."c) The evidence was not conclusive that Iraq purchased,
as opposed to having sought, uranium and the British Government did not
claim this. "d) The forged documents were not available to the
British Government at the time its assessment was made, and so the fact of
the forgery does not undermine it."FactCheck.org, a group headed
by former CNN and Wall Street Journal reporter Brooks Jackson, examined
the controversy and declared, "Both the Butler report and the Senate
Intelligence Committee report make clear that Bush's 16 words weren't
based on the fake documents. The British didn't even see them until after

[CTRL] New proof of Vietnam War atrocities

From the National Archives: New proof of Vietnam War
atrocities
Swift Boat Swill
by Nicholas Turse
September 21st, 2004 11:40 AM

John Kerry is being pilloried for his shocking Senate
testimony 34 years ago that many U.S. soldiers—not
just a few rogues—were committing atrocities against
the Vietnamese. U.S. military records that were
classified for decades but are now available in the
National Archives back Kerry up and put the lie to his
critics. Contrary to what those critics, including the
Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, have implied, Kerry was
speaking on behalf of many soldiers when he testified
before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on April
22, 1971, and said this:

They told stories that at times they had personally
raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from
portable telephones to human genitals and turned up
the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly
shot at civilians, razed villages in a fashion
reminiscent of Genghis Khan, shot cattle and dogs for
fun, poisoned food stocks, and generally ravaged the
countryside of South Vietnam, in addition to the
normal ravage of war and the normal and very
particular ravaging which is done by the applied
bombing power of this country.

The archives have hundreds of files of official U.S.
military investigations of such atrocities committed
by American soldiers. I've pored over those
records—which were classified for decades—for my
Columbia University dissertation and, now, this Voice
article. The exact number of investigated allegations
of atrocities is unknown, as is the number of such
barbaric incidents that occurred but weren't
investigated. Some war crimes, like the Tiger Force
atrocities exposed last year by The Toledo Blade, have
only come to light decades later. Others never will.
But there are plentiful records to back up Kerry's
1971 testimony point by point. Following (with the
names removed or abbreviated) are examples, directly
from the archives:

They had personally raped

On August 12, 1967, Specialist S., a military
intelligence interrogator, raped . . . a 13-year-old
. . . female in an interrogation hut in a P.O.W.
compound. He was convicted of assault and indecent
acts with a child. He served seven months and 16 days
for his crimes.

Cut off ears

On August 9, 1968, a seven-man patrol led by First
Lieutenant S. entered Dien Tien hamlet. Shortly
thereafter, Private First Class W. was heard to shout
to an unidentified person to halt. W. fired his M-16
several times, and the victim was killed. W. then
dragged the body to [the lieutenant's] location. . . .
Staff Sergeant B. told W. to bring back an ear or
finger if he wanted to prove himself a man. W. later
went back to the body and removed both ears and a
finger. W. was charged with assault and conduct to
the prejudice of good order and discipline; he was
court-martialed and convicted, but he served no prison
time. B. was found guilty of assault and was fined $50
a month for three months. S. was discharged from the
army before action could be taken against him.

Cut off heads

On June 23, 1967, members of the 25th Infantry
Division killed two enemy soldiers in combat in Binh
Duong province. An army Criminal Investigation
Division (CID) probe disclosed that Staff Sergeant H.
then decapitated the bodies with an axe. H. was
court-martialed and found guilty of conduct to the
prejudice of good order and discipline. His grade was
reduced, but he served no prison time.

Taped wires from portable telephones to human
genitals and turned up the power

On January 10, 1968, six Green Berets in Long Hai,
South Vietnam, applied electrical torture via field
telephones to the sensitive areas of the bodies of
three men and one woman . . . Four received
reprimands and Article 15s—a nonjudicial punishment
meted out by a commanding officer or officer in charge
for minor offenses. A fifth refused to accept his
Article 15, and no other action was taken against him.
No action was taken against the sixth Green Beret.

Cut off limbs

A CID investigation disclosed that during late
February or early March 1968 near Thanh Duc, South
Vietnam, First Lieutenant L. ordered soldier K. to
shoot an unidentified Vietnamese civilian. K. shot
the Vietnamese civilian, leaving him with wounds in
the chest and stomach. Soldier B., acting on orders
from L., returned to the scene and killed the
Vietnamese civilian, and an unidentified medic severed
the Vietnamese civilian's left arm. No punishment was
meted out because none of the identified
perpetrators was found to be on active duty at the
time of the June 1971 investigation.

Blown up bodies

On February 14, 1969, Platoon Sergeant B. and
Specialist R., on a reconnaissance patrol in Binh Dinh
province, came upon three Vietnamese males . . . whom
they detained and then shot at close range using M-16
automatic fire. B. then arranged the bodies on the
ground so that their heads were close

Subject: [JBirch] WSLabor Secretary Chao: U.N. a Threat to U.S.

  Wes Vernon, NewsMax.com,

ARLINGTON, Va. - President Bush's labor secretary
warned a gathering of conservatives that Americans must pay
more attention to the United Nations and its related organi-
zations, which she noted were chipping away at U.S. sover-
 eignty and threatening freedoms.

Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, making her charges late
Thursday at the Conservative Political Action Conference,
explained that powerful tax-exempt organizations were apply-
ing pressure through the U.N. to have the world body make
decisions for Americans' lives without any input from U.S.
 citizens.

These efforts are being made without the knowledge of
 most Americans, she pointed out.

Chao cited a recent case where a labor union complained
to the United Nations that the U.S. government was violating
international law and international standards on the treat-
 ment of government employees.

The idea that tax-exempt U.N. and allied non-government
organizations would presume to dictate to Americans how they
live, work and conduct themselves on their internal business
was a major theme late Thursday at CPAC, not only from
Secretary Chao but also from panelists who preceded her.

  Foreign Parasites

Tom DeWeese, president of the American Policy Center,
charged that the goal of this unholy alliance was to erase
national boundaries, redistribute wealth on an internation-
al scale and steer decisions on American affairs from repre-
sentative government to the global village, with all of us
 as global citizens.

He and another panelist, Jeff Gayner of Americans for
Sovereignty, called for the U.S. to get out of the U.N. and
to force the U.N. to get out of the U.S.

Secretary Chao cited not only labor organizations but
also groups in other areas of concern, such as Environmental
Policy Institute and self-described human rights groups that
have used their tax-exempt status to try to bring the U.S.
into line with their worldview, without a single American
vote being cast or even an awareness on the part of most U.S
 citizens.

The long list of accredited left-of-center NGOs, she
said, have become key players in laying the groundwork for
international law and, she fears, one day, the U.S. will
be pressured to adopt the globalist agenda without a single
 vote being cast.

  Social Engineering

The internationalist-minded NGOs, the secretary ob-
served, are encouraging the U.N. and its offshoot agencies
to pressure the United States into policies mandating
gender neutrality and reallocating defense expenditures
 for other left-favored causes.

Conservatives who ignore the U.N. do so at their
 peril, Chao declared.

DeWeese said the international tentacles of the NGOs
reached down to local governments around the country. He
said they were working with city and county governments to
use familiar programs to forge ahead with such ideas as
sustainable development, and smart growth, euphemisms,
he said, for pressuring us out of the wide-open suburbs and
into crowded cities. These policies also make housing more
expensive, though liberal politicians constantly bemoan the
lack of affordable housing, a shortage they have abetted.

If you love liberty, the American Policy Center
president told CPAC, sustainable development is your
 enemy.

The job-killing, China-boosting Kyoto global warming
treaty and the International Criminal Court, both rejected
by President Bush, are just the tip of the iceberg, DeWeese
 warned.

Few Americans are aware of what is going on, he
 noted.

It goes to the philosophy of these particular NGOs that
all living creatures are the same, perhaps crowing humans
together in cities, with the animals looking in.

Gayner said Americans would have to use the same mantra

Discrimination against white male found

By George Archibald
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

An English professor at the University of North Carolina illegally
subjected a student to intentional discrimination and harassment
because he was a white, heterosexual Christian male who expressed
disapproval of homosexuality, the U.S. Education Department's Office
of Civil Rights has ruled.
Professor Elyse Crystall violated student Timothy R. Mertes' civil
rights, the agency said, by improperly accusing him of hate speech
in an e-mail sent to students after a class discussion in which Mr.
Mertes said he was a Christian and felt disgusted, not threatened by
homosexual behavior.

The e-mail message not only subjected the student to intentional
discrimination and harassment, but also discouraged the robust
exchange of ideas that is intrinsic to higher education and is at the
very heart of the Constitution's protection of free speech, Alice B.
Wender, the Education Department's southern regional director of civil
rights concluded in a letter to UNC Chancellor James Moeser on Wednesday.
The ruling was hailed by Rep. Walter B. Jones, North Carolina
Republican, who requested a civil rights probe five months ago after
learning about the student's plight from a Raleigh talk-radio show.
This vindicates this young man's First Amendment rights to speak
out, as he has acknowledged, as a Christian, Mr. Jones said. So I'm
going to look at this as a victory for students in this country who
feel that they have a right to express themselves. If you don't have
that right in a collegiate classroom, what rights do you have?
The department's letter said no penalty or further action was
necessary because Ms. Crystall had apologized for her actions and the
university had convened faculty workshops to discourage race and sex
discrimination against white, male, Christian undergraduates.
Mr. Moeser, Ms. Crystall and Mr. Mertes did not respond to
inquiries yesterday.
The federal ruling comes as Mr. Moeser and UNC administrators at
the Chapel Hill campus have moved this month to shut down a male
Christian fraternity there, Alpha Iota Omega, on the grounds the
student group is violating the university's anti-discrimination policy
because it excludes non-Christians and self-professed homosexuals from
membership. The fraternity has filed a federal lawsuit against UNC to
protect its membership policy from university interference.
This adds another example to what is a problem at the University
of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and also, I believe, it's a problem
across this nation, Mr. Jones said of the UNC effort to shut down the
fraternity.
There have been similar efforts against Christian student groups
at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., the Pennsylvania State
University, the University of Minnesota, the University of Oklahoma
and Southwest Missouri State University.
The civil rights probe of UNC involved a discussion seminar on
diversity issues — required for graduation for which Ms. Crystall was
the professor, according to Ms. Wender's 11-page letter announcing the
agency's decision.
In a session in February, students told investigators that they
were discussing one author's views that society affords whites,
males, and heterosexuals privileges that others, for example, blacks,
women and homosexuals, do not have, the decision letter stated.
A topic of the session was whether heterosexual men felt
'threatened' by homosexual men. Toward the end of the class, Mr.
Mertes stated that 'threatened' was the wrong word to use.
According to the letter, Mr. Mertes cited the example of a friend
in California who is a Christian and who was propositioned by a gay
man. He got a love letter from this man, and he felt dirty and
disgusted, not threatened.
Mr. Mertes told the class that, as a Christian, he felt the same
way, the letter said. He would not want to have to explain to his
6-year-old why

Jim,

AIM is a regular recipient of annual $250,000 grants from Scaife.
You don't need me to break down the Scaife angle, do you?

http://www.mediatransparency.org/search_results/in
fo_on_any_recipient.php?recipientID=1374

Reed Irvine is the force behind AIM. Cliff may be the editor in chief,
but nothing gets published if Reed Irvine does not approve.

From Jim Marrs:

Media watchdog organizations like the right-wing Accuracy in Media
(AIM) are especially suspect, even though they pretend to watch out
for the public interest.

Writer Michael Collins Piper in 1990 made public that AIM founder
Reed Irvine was paid $37,000 a year as an 'advisor for the division of
international finance of the Federal Reserve System,' writes Marrs.
Noting that many Fed members also belong to the secret societies,
Piper wrote, 'To this day, Irvine and AIM never touch on any subject
which is sensitive to the interests of the international
Establishment: whether it be the Bilderberger group, the Trilateral
Commission, the Council on Foreign Relations or the truth about the
privately owned Federal Reserve.'

From Robert Sterling (the Konformist):

That family history aside, Scaife has some impressive intelligence
credits of his own. He was behind a major CIA propaganda effort based
in London, beginning as a group known as Forum World Features in the
1960s, which became the Institute for the Study of Conflict in 1970.
Both were funded jointly by Scaife and the CIA. He is also a major
financier of Reed Irvine's Orwellian-named Accuracy In Media (AIM) the
right-wing disinformation unit with major ties to the CIA and the
Mikkies (military-industrial komplex.) With this history, it should be
no surprise that Scaife was listed as one of the CIA's Mockingbird
operatives in Alex Constantine's expose on the intelligence
establishment's iron grip on the korporate media.

How much of his work is intelligence work, how much of it is
ideological, and how much of it is just him looking after his own
interests can be debated: in many ways, it is one in the same, as
Scaife's involvement in intelligence and politics is much to further
his own business interests. To put it another way, Scaife would say,
What is good for the Richard Mellon Scaife is good for the United
States. That said, there is a definite right-wing bent to his work
and financing. Consider the following:

* in 1980, he helped finance propaganda for the Reagan Revolution,
namely the Gipper's often reactionary economic system that people like
Scaife conveniently benefited from.

* He is friends with Ken Starr, giving him his academic job offer,
which Starr originally accepted, then declined when it became viewed
as unseemly.

* He is the owner of the right-wing Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, whose
most famous reporter, Christopher Ruddy, has been one of the more
vocal Vince Foster Was Murdered proponents. (To his credit, Ruddy
does a pretty decent job in his work despite his dubious money source.)

* Then there is the following list of foundation contributions by
Scaife: Free Congress Research and Education Foundation, run by Paul
Weyrich, $1.67 million; The American Spectator Educational Foundation,
Publisher of the American Spectator, $950,000; Judicial Watch, Larry
Klayman's Klinton sue-happy org, $550,000; Landmark Legal Foundation,
$525,000; Southeastern Legal Foundation, which represents ex-Secret
Service agent Gary Aldrich's tawdry book, $150,000. All told,
according to Time Magazine, Scaife has give $200 million over the past
30 years to right-wing causes and foundations, or enough to film
another Titanic.

Title: A day in the life
-Caveat Lector-

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF JOE REPUBLICAN

Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare
his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some
tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards.

With his first swallow of coffee, he takes his daily medication. His
medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought
to insure their safety and that they work as advertised.

All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer's medical
plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for
paid medical insurance - now Joe gets it, too.

He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe's bacon is safe
to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the
meat packing industry.

In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is
properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total
contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know
what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.

Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he
breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought
for laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks to the
subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves
him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some
fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which
gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his workday. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical
benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy
liberal union members fought and died for these working standards.
Joe's employer pays these standards because Joe's employer doesn't
want his employees to call the union.

If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he'll get a worker
compensation or unemployment checks because some stupid liberal didn't
think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune. Its
noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some
bills.

Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless
liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who
ruined the banking system before the Great Depression. Joe has to pay
his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal
student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the
government would be better off if he was educated and earned more
money over his lifetime.

Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at
his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His
car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating
liberal fought for car safety standards.

He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live
in the house financed by Farmers' Home Administration because bankers
didn't want to make rural loans.

The house didn't have electricity until some big-government liberal
stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural
electrification.

He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on
Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking,
cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe
wouldn't have to.

Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk
show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and
conservatives are good.

He doesn't mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against
every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day.

Joe agrees: We don't need those big-government liberals ruining our
lives! After all, I'm a self-made man who believes everyone should
take care of themselves, just like I have.

Letter from Mexico

Booming trade under the skull and crossbones

Kurt Hollander
Guardian Weekly

In the last century the neighbourhood of Tepito in Mexico City went from being the centre of second-hand goods to being the hub of fayuca - illegally imported or stolen electrical appliances. When Nafta got rid of tariffs on electrical appliances, Tepito evolved into the home of Mexican piratería .
Piratería, the illegal reproduction and sale of DVDs, videos, music, computer programs and video games, along with knock-offs of brand-name clothes, represents the most lucrative industry in Mexico. Sales of these illegal goods represent three times that of Pemex, the government-owned oil company.
On the global scale, Mexico is exceeded only by China and Russia in pirate profits. Some 40% of all sales in Mexico are from pirated goods, and it is estimated that up to 70% of CDs and DVDs are illegally reproduced. And the vast majority of pirated goods are made in and around Tepito. Which is to say, business here is booming.
The streets are completely overrun by stalls set up underneath coloured tarpaulins that extend for dozens of blocks in all directions, creating a cramped outdoor "mall" in one of the city's only pedestrian neighbourhoods. This new industry of workers exists outside the law, and lacks all worker benefits and protection. Which is perhaps why so many people have been flocking to the new saint in town, la santa muerte (holy death), who is called upon to help people out of difficulties, especially those involving money, violence and the law.

When I ask one of the vendors wearing a black santa muerte T-shirt if he really believes in her power, he lifts up his shirt and shows me several stab wounds on his back. "If it weren't for her protection, I would have bled to death like a stuck pig. Of course I believe in her." In Tepito pirates still operate under the emblem of a skull and crossbones. Curiously, the police also pay their respects to this skeletal figure, whose altars are to be seen on several corners in Tepito.
The police, however, rarely enter the neighbourhood. Tepiteños handle their own security. This I get to see first-hand. One guy, obviously on drugs, tries to steal some clothes off a stand: he is quickly stomped on by several members of the local business community, right in front of the shopping crowd. One old lady turns to me: "Whatever happened to the saying that anyone who steals from a thief is granted a hundred years of forgiveness?" I imagine that only applies if you get away with it.
In Tepito one can buy DVDs of all the Hollywood films, months before they appear in licensed form. Usually the pirated copies are shot with a digital video camera during a preview screening. As such, the movie is often complemented by images of people getting up out of their seats or accompanied by the sounds of popcorn crunching or someone coughing. The millions of dollars spent on special effects inevitably become lost in translation.
It is not just Hollywood blockbuster films that are illegally reproduced here, however. Much to my surprise, I find a copy of my own feature film, Carambola , on sale. My film, like all the countless Hollywood and Mexican films sold in Tepito, costs six pesos (50 cents), as opposed to DVDs sold in shops, which sell for more than $17. The cost of the film is not what surprises me, though. My surprise is the fact that, unlike the other films on sale here, my film isn't even finished yet.
I ask the guy in the stand to pop my film into his DVD player so I can watch it on the television he has set up in the stall. What is being sold as Carambola , I see, is actually a crude version that must have been illegally purchased from someone at one of the laboratories the film has passed through in its post-production stage. On the cover of the DVD all the credits that appear are invented, but for the main actors' and my own, while 20th Century Fox is credited as the distributor.
When I tell the vendor that I'm the director and that the film isn't even finished, he's impressed, though not with me. "People are watching your film before it even comes out? Now that's the magic of Tepito!"

Summary: ... Covering a two-year period, [Michel] Negroponte's psychological
drama-cum-documentary unveils fragments of Maggie's biography and the
circumstances that catapulted her into mental illness. The filmmaker meets
the friends who help Maggie survive, tracks down her real family and learns
about Maggie's past: she once achieved short-lived notoriety as the first
female hansom carriage driver in New York City; she appeared in a Universal
newsreel and on the television show What's My Line? and went on to become
involved in two relationships that produced two sons tragically lost to her
when she was committed to a mental hospital. As she hovers protectively over
her growing canine brood, Maggie seems to be reliving her fleeting
experience of motherhood. ...

DVD Review

By James Plath (March 10, 2004)
³Jupiter¹s Wife² is a documentary that focuses on a single homeless woman
and her pack of dogs as they roam the 843 acres of New York City¹s famed
Central Park

The film gets its title from an appropriated Greek mythology that Maggie has
constructed to give her life a scale and substance that we suspect somehow
balances her lowly existence and the tragic events that brought her to that
state. It goes something like this: She is Jupiter¹s wife, and WEARS WALKMAN
HEADPHONES MOST OF THE TIME BECAUSE THIS IS HOW SHE¹S ABLE TO HEAR MESSAGES
FROM HIM. A BELEIVER IN ESP, Maggie tells Negroponte that she had been
expecting him, and relates how ESP ENABLES HER TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE
CHILDREN she can no longer see. ... just as you begin to believe that Maggie
is totally delusional ... there are some awfully ironic twists that involve
celebrities and film clips from the Œ60s that Negroponte included.
work, Negroponte could have done better if he had persuaded an actor to
play himself on the voiceover. His own voice isn¹t terribly dynamic, though,
as with the other technical aspects, it doesn¹t intrude to the point where
it ruins the film.

[CTRL] Biographer still insists Kerry a 'hero'

MISSION: IMPLAUSIBLESenator's campaign paid for Brinkley to issue

  Amid ongoing criticism by Swift
Boat Veterans for Truth, the author of a sympathetic biography of John
Kerry's war years appeared to back off his book's portrayal of the senator
as a hero but insisted in a subsequent statement paid for by the Kerry
  campaign that he was misinterpreted.

In a New York Times interview published yesterday, Douglas Brinkley,
author of "Tour of Duty: John Kerry and the Vietnam War," commented on the
impact of efforts to refute the two presidential candidates' recounting of
  their Vietnam-era military service.
"Every American now knows that there's something really screwy about
George Bush and the National Guard, and they know that John Kerry was not
the war hero we thought he was," Brinkley told the Times.
The paper added that Brinkley made the comment "acknowledging that Mr.
Kerry's opponents had succeeded in raising questions about his service."

The University of New Orleans professor did not respond to WND's
request to elaborate on the remark, but he issued a press release stating
the Times story "leaves the false impression that I think John Kerry was
not 'the war hero we thought he was.'"
"Nothing could be further from the truth," Brinkley said. "He was a
great American fighting man in Vietnam and deserved all of his medals.
Over the past year I have vigorously defended Kerry's military record and
  will continue to do so."
Brinkley said his comment was meant to be about the political
consequences of the anti-Kerry Swift boat attacks vs. the anti-Bush
  National Guard ones.
"I was speaking about public perceptions not my personal beliefs," he
  stated.
But Jerome Corsi, co-author of the swiftboat vets group's New York
Times No. 1 best-seller, "Unfit for
Command,"thinks the initial interpretation -- that Brinkley is
stepping away from the book -- is more consistent with the historian's
  recent, less vigrous posture.
"It sounds like the Kerry campaign, in a panic, got to Brinkley and he
is running for cover," Corsi said.
Brinkley's statement, issued via U.S. Newswire, was paid for by
Kerry-Edwards 2004, according to Editor Publisher.
The Kerry campaign did not immediately respond to a request from WND,
seeking to find out whether Brinkley's statement was initiated by the
  campaign itself.
Corsi notes that it was Brinkley's book, published in January, that
raised the ire of so many of the men who served with Kerry and prompted
the formation of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth in early April.
The founder of the group, Adm. Roy Hoffman, became incensed when he
read the book's negative portrayal of his character, and Kerry offered to
help correct the record in a new edition.
But no update was produced until the paperback version, coming out this
  week. As WorldNetDaily
reported, Brinkley also told a veteran who says his battalion was
"sullied" by a war-crimes charge in the book that publisher Harper
Colllins would issue a new edition within two weeks.
But that promise was made in early May.
Corsi characterizes the book as poorly researched and full of glaring
  inconsistencies.
"He did little else but take Kerry's word for events in Vietnam," Corsi
said. "It is more of a campaign biography that fits the rules of
hagiography rather than a serious, critical biography and is not worthy of
the standards of a professor with a Ph.D."
As just one example, Corsi says Brinkley states in the book that
Kerry's resignation letter from Vietnam Veterans Against the War is in the
controversial anti-war group's archives, but the author footnotes Kerry as
the source without researching it himself.
Corsi noted Kerry has refused to make public the materials used
exclusively by Brinkley in the book, including his diaries and letters.
Kerry had insisted in interviews that he had an agreement with Brinkley
that prevented release of the diaries, but the historian says he has given
up all rights, and it is up to the senator to give permission.
Brinkley told the Washington Post in August, "I don't mind if John
Kerry shows anybody anything. If he wants to let anybody in, that's his
business. Go bug John Kerry, and leave me

Kerry flip on West Bank wall may cost votes, some say

Efforts to secure part of the Democratic Party's Florida base may cost
Sen. John Kerry support from a smaller, but possibly vital, constituency:
  Arab-Americans.
In a recent interview with The Palm Beach Post, Kerry reiterated
his support for the Jewish state, including its right to built a security
barrier through the occupied West Bank territory and its ability to buy
advanced weapons, such as "bunker-busting" bombs.
Israel used such a bomb two years ago to assassinate a terrorist leader
in the Gaza Strip, but the explosion also killed 15 civilians, including
  children.

Kerry also said that, although he would encourage movement toward a
peace plan between Israel and the Palestinians, he would not do so "at the
expense of Israel's right to defend herself."
"Israel has to negotiate Israel's security, not the United States,"
  Kerry said.
Kerry's position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict appears virtually
identical to that of President George W. Bush, whom Israeli Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon has called Israel's strongest supporter ever in the White
  House.
Republicans, who have been working to eat into the estimated 80 percent
support that Jewish voters in Florida gave to the Democratic ticket in
2000, said it is too late to be shoring up votes from those who
traditionally have supported the Democratic Party.
"Me-too leadership is not what the Jewish community is looking for,"
said state Rep. Adam Hasner, a Delray Beach Republican and Florida
chairman of the Bush-Cheney campaign's Jewish Outreach Coalition.
Kerry's position supporting Israel in its construction of a barrier —
the 480-mile project includes trenches, barbed wire and concrete walls —
goes against the international community, which has condemned it. The
position also is a change from what Kerry told Arab-Americans at a
conference last October, when he called the project a "barrier to
  peace."
"It certainly was a bit of a slap in the face to us," said James Zogby,
president of the Washington, D.C.-based Arab American Institute. "It was
  embarrassing."
Taleb Salhab, head of the Florida Arab American Leadership Council and
a Democratic activist in Orange County, conceded that Kerry's stronger
pro-Israel line would make it tougher to persuade Arab-American voters to
  support him.
Still, he said Arab-Americans interested in seeing Palestinians getting
their own state and bringing peace to the region would be better off with
Kerry than with Bush, who Salhab said had essentially given Sharon carte
blanche to do whatever he wanted.
During Bush's three years in office, "more Palestinians and Israelis
have died than in any other three-year period in the last 30 years,"
  Salhab said.
There are about 500,000 Jewish voters in Florida and about 120,000
  Arab-American voters.
Michael Lebovitz, Jewish Outreach coordinator for the Bush-Cheney
campaign, said Kerry's changing position on the issue would help Bush win
more than the 19 percent of the Jewish vote he received nationally in
  2000.
"The president has been steadfast in his support for Israel and helping
Israel remain safe and secure," Lebovitz said. "I contrast that with Sen.
Kerry, who, depending on the audience he's talking to, says different
  things."
Zogby said he believes Kerry took some bad advice when he shifted his
position. He said Jewish voters tend to be fairly liberal on social issues
and the vast majority of them would have supported Kerry even with his
  original stance.
"At the end of the of the day, I don't think they gained five votes,
but I think they lost many more than that," Zogby said.
He said he continues to support Kerry because he believes Bush has been
uncritically supportive of Israel and unengaged in the conflict there.
Kerry, who spoke to The Post Wednesday after meeting with about
65 Jewish community leaders from Palm Beach and Broward counties, also
said he would be better for Israel's security by fixing the "mess" in
  Iraq.
"I think President Bush has drawn terrorists to the region who weren't
  there

[CTRL] Kerry Taps Controversial Elian Attorney

Kerry Taps Controversial Elian Attorney
The Elian Gonzalez controversy was the single most
critical factor giving George Bush the presidency in 2000.
It may prove to be a critical factor this year as well – thanks to John Kerry
who just tapped a key figure in the Elian controversy for his campaign.
Kerry must have forgotten that after the Elian brouhaha record numbers of
Cuban Americans in Florida voted against Al Gore – ceding the closely contested
Florida race – and the presidency to George Bush.
The Miami Herald reported Saturday that "a lawyer unpopular with many Cuban
Americans for his role in the Elián González case will help prepare John Kerry
for the upcoming presidential debate to be held at the University of Miami.”
That lawyer’s name is Gregory Craig, a well-connected Washington attorney who
represented Elian Gonzalez’s father.
Craig worked closely with the Cuban government and Attorney General Janet
Reno to gain custody of little Elian.

In the end, armed federal immigration officers stormed the home of Elian’s
uncle and seized the boy. With the help of Reno and the Clinton White House,
Craig successfully returned Elian to Castro’s custody.
Now, Craig has been tapped by John Kerry’s campaign to prepare him for his
first debate with President Bush, which is scheduled for Sept. 30 in Miami.
Craig will also reportedly play the role of President Bush in a series of
mock debates with Kerry.
Craig’s new role in the Kerry campaign underscores Senator Ted Kennedy’s
strong control over the Kerry effort.
Craig has been a longstanding Kennedy operative, and the Herald noted that
Craig had "served as a top foreign policy advisor to Sen. Edward Kennedy . . .”
Superlawyer Craig also served as Bill Clinton's lead impeachment lawyer.
The Craig appointment is in keeping with NewsMax Magazine’s recent cover
story "Teddy’s Back!”
Authored by best-selling author Richard Poe, the report reveals that Ted
Kennedy is the driving force behind the Kerry campaign and that Kennedy
operatives – including Kerry campaign manager Mary Beth Cahill and political
adviser Bob Shrum – are calling the shots.
But the selection of Craig will be seen as a major slap in the face to Cuban
American voters – a voting bloc Kerry has been trying to woo.

Kerry has sought to outflank Bush by claiming Bush has been too soft on
Castro and Venezuela’s Marxist dictator Hugo Chavez.

Just this month the Kerry campaign even opened a campaign office in Miami’s
Little Havana and began broadcasting radio ads in Spanish attacking Bush’s Cuba
policies.
But Kerry’s efforts in Miami may be for naught with the Craig appointment.
Even the Herald noted Kerry’s error, calling the Craig appointment a
"misstep, signaling a campaign that is still learning its way around Florida --
and Miami's -- complicated mix of politics, six weeks before the election.”
