[CTRL] virus turns cunning

The flu virus turns cunning to outsmart the immune system
By Lorraine Fraser in London
September 23 2002

The influenza virus has developed a "nasty trick" - the ability to circumvent the human
body's main defence against the disease, raising the prospect of a deadly global
outbreak.

Scientists investigating 1997's Hong Kong flu have discovered it learnt how to bypass
the
immune system, and new flus have since been found with similar abilities.

"This is a really nasty trick that this virus has learnt: to bypass all the innate
mechanisms
that cells have for shutting down the virus," said Robert Webster, who led the study
at St
Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. "It is the first time this
mechanism has shown up and we wonder if it was not a similar mechanism that made the
1918 influenza virus so enormously pathogenic."

The 1918 virus killed 50 million people. Dr Klaus Stohr, the leader of the World Health
Organisation's global flu program, called the 1997 outbreak "the last warning from
nature"
that the world faces a pandemic similar to 1918.

The Hong Kong virus, which killed six people, did not transmit easily from person to
person,
but other flu viruses with similar anti-immune abilities have since been identified.
Dr Stohr
said: "Imagine if that [Hong Kong] virus obtained a little additional capacity to be
freely
transmitted in humans - a large proportion of the population of the world would
presumably
have died."

The new research, published in Nature Medicine, found the Hong Kong virus was able to
avoid

interferons and other vital chemical factors that are released as a response to
infection. A
single mutation on a flu virus gene was linked with the change.

"The parents of the 1997 virus are still present in southern China," Dr Webster said.
"The
fact that it is still there, and it has this ability to pull off new tricks all the
time, is a threat."

It takes at least six months to produce a new flu vaccine but a fresh pandemic could
spread
across the world in days. The only hope, Dr Webster said, was to stockpile anti-flu
drugs,
but even America has baulked at the cost.

Dr Stohr warned that the last pandemic was 34 years ago, while the average time between
pandemics was about 28 years. "We are beyond the odds now - it is a question of when."

If someone really gets this virus pleeease send it to me.
I am so sad that I never really encountered a virus ready to destroy my
hard-disc though it was said to be.
(sniff)

btw:
Why is it that people are so easy to believe that there are these kind of
viruses? Why do they believe a virus warning and send it out to mailing
lists, to all friends, relatives etc etc etc etc etc...so that my mailboy is
full of "warnings", standing right next to "people from Nigeria wanting to
give me a fortune" and "gorgeous business opportunities"?

I think what it needs is more people to read, to do some research then and to
think about hoaxes.

This is not meant as an insult, I myself sent out virus warnings like these
before I was asked to do some research etc before forwarding those mails.
It worked for me.

[CTRL] VIRUS HOAX WARNINGS

2002-02-08 Thread Joshua Tinnin

-Caveat Lector-

FYI, as a virus warning hoax has just been sent to CTRL - check this page for
hoaxes when you get one of these things, and reply-to-all who sent you the hoax
with the hoax reference page, and also the following URL:

from - http://www.europe.f-secure.com/news/hoax.htm

Hoax warnings

This page is considered the industry standard information source for new virus
hoaxes and false alerts. Bookmark now.

Hoax warnings are typically scare alerts started by malicious people - and
passed on by innocent users who think they are helping the community by
spreading the warning.

Do not forward hoax messages. We've seen cases where e-mail systems have
collapsed after dozens of users forwarded a false alert to everybody in the
company. Corporate users can get rid of the hoax problem by simply setting a
strict company guideline: End users must not forward virus alarms. Ever. It's
not the job of an end user anyway. If such message is received, end users could
forward it to the IT department but not to anyone else.

Do note that we generally add only virus-related hoaxes to this list. We can not
evaluate whether non-computer related folklore stories are urban legends or true
stories. We're not going to add them to this list either. Check
http://www.urbanlegends.com for general urban legends.

[CTRL] Virus Spreads Across Britain

Virus Spreads Across Britain
The Associated Press
Published: Jan 23, 2002

LONDON (AP) - A flu-like virus that led a Scottish hospital to shut down its
admissions has spread to hospitals throughout Britain, health officials said
Wednesday.

Glasgow's Victoria Infirmary was forced to close Saturday to all but emergency
admissions following the rapid spread of the virus. Although rarely
life-threatening, the bug has unpleasant symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea
and fever for one to two days.

In total, 295 staff and patients had been affected, the hospital said Wednesday.

Health officials said 15 hospitals across Scotland had now been hit by the
virus. Hospitals in Manchester in northern England and in the counties of
Hertfordshire, Sussex, Dorset and Cornwall in southern England had also
reported cases.

Officials at Morriston Hospital in Swansea, south Wales said that more than
20 staff and patients on a ward had been struck by the virus. Health chiefs
closed the ward to new admissions until the outbreak clears, a spokesman said.

Simon Gregor, spokesman for the Public Health Laboratory Service which
monitors infectious disease outbreaks, said the virus was present all year
round, but said the current levels were higher than normal. The Department
of Health estimates that the bug affects up to 1 percent of the British
population every year.

Health Secretary Alan Milburn said the Department of Health was "keeping a
close eye" on the spread of the virus.

Referred to as the "winter vomiting bug," the virus' more official title is
the Norwalk-like virus, after the town in Ohio, in the United States, where
it was identified.

The virus is airborne and can pass from person to person with ease. It is
often found in hospitals and schools.

[CTRL] Virus on Google in Boohoo Accounts

2001-11-29 Thread Saba

-Caveat Lector-

So here is what I turned into Web TV for investigation.

I do not know this [EMAIL PROTECTED] I doubt very much his many other
names will come to your mind.but for your information when looking
up c. as he looks up others and spies around I came up with thisthe
last item is the one which is loaded with virus.

Note mention of Russian pornography so he keeps track does he? And so
who is this [EMAIL PROTECTED] who claims to moderate a list.

Seems to me there must be a reason for this but you see anyone checking
out Boohoo (and c. is its moderator) will find that suddenly their
computer is attacked by virus?

I have a web tv. Regardless I received two such phoney letters and
checked and somehow it seems always timed, with little c. and his name
calling?

He must be very virus conscience for he has enough access to such
material.

Re: [CTRL] VIRUS ALERT: BadTrans computer virus strikes

2001-11-29 Thread Joshua Tinnin

-Caveat Lector-

Chances are, Saba, boohoo was probably not an originator, unless the headers
are forged, and, even then, possibly not.

Most email worms are replicated from the worm going through the address
book, once activated, and automatically emailing everyone in the book.

Chances are boohoo got the worm and didn't know it, or didn't know how to
control it.

People, go to zonealarm.com and get their free firewall, which will, at the
very least, prevent control of your computer through drones. And get some
virus protection - it's like safe sex, but not as enjoyable, I would admit.

-Caveat Lector-

Mr. Kalivis write me off list for I could not write to under your
present address for some reason.

Found something connected to a person on this list and it was so full of
virus that ech time I tried to go a little further - each time my web TV
would turn off..with the web you are protected for when there is a
virus I found out, the web is turned off.

I could not send this item to list though for someone to check out as
each item is contaminated.

Sent this information on for my web to check out to see what this is and
if it is just another accident.

It came from boohoo.demon.co.uk

Maybe "boohoo" is not aware of this?

But anyone checking out "boohoo.demon.co.uk" be prepared to be in one
big mess for this item on Google is loaded.

Presumable little Boohoo does not know of this?

Whoever he might be.

Why would I open an attachment containing a virus alert? I got clobbered by

BadTrans computer virus strikes
http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sci/tech/newsid_1678000/1678578.stm

Be careful whatyou type, Badtrans could be watching

A sneaky Windows computer virus is circulating that tries to install
software that monitors what users are typing and passes it to the
malicious
program's creator.
Like many of the other computer viruses that have struck in recent
months,
BadTrans-B attempts to spread by exploiting weaknesses in Microsoft
e-mail
programs.

One anti-virus company has caught over 20,000 copies of the virus in the
last 24 hours.

The UK, Germany and US are the countries most seriously infected by the
virus.

Old holes

The BadTrans-B virus is spreading swiftly because, unlike many other
e-mail
viruses, the pernicious payload that helps it raid Microsoft Outlook
address
books does not have to be clicked on to set it off.

Simply previewing the item could cause infection. The loophole the virus
exploits was first discovered in early 2001.

"It's baffling to find that even though Microsoft secured that hole eight
months ago, many users have still not applied the patch," said Graham
Cluley
of anti-virus firm Sophos.

When the virus mails itself to the contacts in the address books it
raids,
the virus uses a subject line from an existing message to make it appear
to
be a legitimate reply.

The virus also regularly swaps the name of the attachment travelling with
it, in an attempt to conceal its pernicious payload.

BadTrans-B is a variant of the original BadTrans virus that was first
discovered in April.

BT Openworld error

As well as raiding Outlook and Outlook Express address books, the virus
also
tries to implant a hidden program that tries to send an identifying net
address to the author of the virus.

The hidden program also monitors what users are typing and the
information
it tracks could be used by a malicious hacker to steal credit card
information or passwords for websites.

Britain seems to have been hit hard by the BadTrans-B Windows virus.
Anti-virus firm Message Labs, which logs the numbers of pernicious
programs
it traps, has caught over 21,000 copies of BadTrans-B in the last 24
hours.
Over 50% of these originated in Britain.

The spread of the virus was inadvertently helped by BT Openworld, which
accidentally e-mailed a copy of the virus to its customers.

F-Secure Virus Descriptions
NAME: BadTrans.B
ALIAS: BadtransII, I-Worm.BadtransII, W95/Badtrans.B@mm
http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/badtrs_b.shtml

Information about the original W95/Badtrans is available at:
http://www.F-Secure.com/v-descs/badtrans.shtml

Disinfection instructions for Badtrans.b worm can be found here:

http://www.europe.f-secure.com/v-descs/bt_b_dis.shtml

Badtrans.B e-mail worm has been found from several locations in Europe on
24th of November 2001. This worm sends variably named attachments which
might execute automatically when the emails are viewed.

Badtrans.B is spreading under Win32 systems. The virus sends email
messages
with infected attached files, as well as installs spying trojan component
to
steal information from infected systems.

The worm itself is Win32 executable file (PE EXE file). It was found
in-the-wild in compressed form, and has about 29Kb of size. Being
decompressed the worm file length gets about 60Kb of size.

The worm consists of two main components - Worm and Trojan. The "Worm"
component sends infected messages, the "Trojan" component sends out the
information (user's info, RAS data, cached passwords, keyboard log) from
infected computers to specified email address. It also keeps "leylogger"
program body in its code and installs it into the system while infecting
a
new machine.

Infecting the system

When an infected file is run (when a user clicks on attached file and
activates it, or if the worm gets control through IFRAME security breach)
the worm code gets control. First of all the worm drops (installs) its
components to the system and registers them in system registry.

The installed trojan file name, the target directory and registry key are
optional. They are stored in encrypted form in trojan file at the file
end.
A hacker may configure them before sending it to a victim machine, or
before
put it on a web site.

The worm also drops additional keyboard hooker (Win32 DLL file) to the
system and the uses that to spy on text entered by keyboard. Th

[CTRL] Virus Alert

2000-05-05 Thread Bill Richer

It has been reported that copy cats are hard at work building
on the now infamous 'ILOVEYOU' worm, with a new worm called
'Mother's Day', along with other variants.

As many as five new strains of the "ILOVEYOU" worm have surfaced
in the last 24 hours after the first version appeared, including one
   labeled
"fwd: Joke," and another called "very funny". Industry experts say
   many
more can be expected in the coming days and weeks.

Security experts believe the most destructive of the lot will be the
   so-called
   "Mother's Day virus."

That strain has the subject line "Mother's Day Order Confirmation,"
   with
text that states the recipient's credit card has been charged $326.92
   for
a Mother's Day diamond special. The e-mail urges the recipient to
examine the attached invoice carefully and save it. Once the fictional
   invoice
is opened, the virus is in motion again.

This virus deletes system files including .INI and .BAT files - causing
more
problems than the 'ILOVEYOU' worm - possibly preventing systems from
   booting.

If you receive any of the above - DELETE the email messages
   immediately.

Re: [CTRL] Virus Alert

2000-04-18 Thread Eagle 1

Virus Warnings are a pet peeve,
especially when the person who passes it on hasn't done his/her homework...

There are several very good Virus Alert / Hoax checking services available
on the internet. It only takes a minute or two to go to and research the
information you've been sent by someone who inadvertently didn't do their
homework to begin with...
One of these legitimate and hoax researching outlets is :
Data Fellows
http://www.datafellows.com/news/hoax.htm
who have always, in my opinion, been up to date and very informative with
regards to real alerts and real hoaxes. Put their address in your favorite
places and when you feel the 'urge' to pass on another virus alert, go
their first and research it before you panic.

To research the WOBBLER virus alert - just go:
 http://www.datafellows.com/hoaxes/wobbhoax.htm

To research WIN A HOLIDAY - just go:
 http://www.datafellows.com/hoaxes/winholid.htm
and
 http://www.datafellows.com/hoaxes/holiday.htm

Again, it only takes a minute to research information like this before you
pass it on.
Thanks for listening (reading as the case may be).

APStrojan.qa
APStrojan.qa is a trojan and AVERT raised its risk
assessment from Low to Medium--On Watch. It primarily infects Windows 98
systems, though it may also infect Windows 95 if the file MSVBVM50.DLL is
present. Please Note: This trojan has been reported by several users
of the America Online Internet service. For this reason, AVERT
researchers suspect it has been distributed by spam email sent to AOL users.
APStrojan.qa is a password stealer designed to attack America Online
client software to determine user account passwords. It will then attempt to
send the stolen information to the author of the trojan.
APStrojan.qa has been distributed as an attachment to an email with
the subject line "hey you." The attachment has been widely reported with the
name "MINE.EXE." Important: If your system has been infected with
APStrojan.qa, AFTER removing the trojan, be sure to choose a new
password for your AOL account!
***BackDoor-G2
***BackDoor-G2 is an Internet Backdoor trojan that infects
Windows 9x systems. It is a new variant of the original BackDoor-G,
which was first discovered 4/15/99. AVERT has changed its risk assessment
from Low to Medium--On Watch for individual home users (there have as yet
been no reports of infection from corporate clients). Once it
infects your PC, BackDoor-G2 allows anyone running the appropriate client
software to have virtually unlimited access to your system over the
Internet. Your vital, private files may be read, altered, or destroyed.

[CTRL] Virus Makes US Debut-5 Dead So Far.

1999-10-01 Thread William Shannon

 -Caveat Lector-

Fifth Death Linked to West Nile Virus Reported
--
--

By Grant McCool

NEW YORK, Oct 01 (Reuters) - Health authorities on Wednesday reported another
death in New York caused by a mosquito-borne encephalitic virus never before
diagnosed in the Western hemisphere, boosting the death toll to five.

New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Neal Cohen told a news conference that
scientists had confirmed that the West Nile virus caused the death of a
79-year-old woman in New York City on September 11.

Four people are now confirmed to have died in New York City and a fifth in
Westchester County north of the city. Cohen said that he had no information
about a reported death in Toronto, where health officials said that a man who
had visited New York earlier this month died Saturday, possibly from the
disease.

In Atlanta, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that
the virus had also infected birds and mosquitoes in Connecticut. Scientists
have not been able to explain how the West Nile virus reached the United
States.

As reported on Reuters Health, the outbreak, previously believed to be St.
Louis Encephalitis (SLE), came to the attention of New York City health
officials in August and prompted authorities to spray the entire city with
insecticide in early September in an attempt to kill off mosquitoes.

The CDC said that it would spearhead a door-to-door study this weekend in the
borough of Queens, where the majority of cases have been diagnosed, to find
out more about how the virus took hold.

"Blood samples will be tested for antibodies to the virus," Dr. Ned Hayes, a
CDC epidemiologist and coordinator of the study, said at the news conference.
"We hope to get a better understanding of the symptoms of West Nile virus, as
well as possible risk factors for infection."

Cohen said that 31 cases of the virus had been confirmed in New York, up from
25 two days ago. He noted that 6 individuals were still hospitalized.

Health officials said that the CDC was testing more than 1,000 dead birds,
mostly crows, from New York and surrounding states to determine the extent of
disease transmission.

In New Jersey, health officials said that that they had established
surveillance programs for mosquitoes in all counties. Health officials in the
state's most populated county, Bergen County, with 860,000 people, said that
they had sent two or three dozen dead crows to the CDC for testing for the
West Nile virus.

"We have been on an extra heightened alert because of our close proximity to
New York," said Thomas Breslin, spokesman for New Jersey Department of
Health. "The focus now is on West Nile virus, but there have been no cases
found yet in the human population of New Jersey."

AOL has said that this is a very dangerous virus and that there is NO

from:

IBM has determined that a small number of Aptiva PCs with model numbers 240,
301, 520 and 580 manufactured between March 5 and March 17, 1999, and sold
in the United States, have been exposed to the CIH computer virus. No other
Aptiva models or IBM products are known to be affected.

The CIH virus, which is spread from one PC to another when an executable
file is transferred, may render an infected PC inoperable when the date on
the PC's internal calendar reads April 26 of any year.

For more information, including how affected users can obtain an AntiVirus
Update CD from IBM that corrects the problem, IBM Aptiva owners can go to
http://www.ibm.com/support and click on "Aptiva CIH Virus" in the "Short
cuts" list, or call the IBM HelpCenter around-the-clock at 1-800-600-8235.

Good idea...except that AOLers are at the mercy of their program, which seems
to do everything as an attachment instead of pasting it into the message. Some
mail programs also do this with forwarded mail and even replies. My pet peeve
is HTML mail...could people using Netscape, etc., please *turn off the
HTML*??? Just send it as text, no stationery, etc. Thank you. (And thanks for
raising this issue, Danny.)

I notice that a few members of this list send almost everything as
attachments, even simple text files. Why not eliminate attachments to
the extent possible and then we won't have to worry about accidently
opening a *.exe file.

[CTRL] Virus Myth

RETHINKING AIDS HOMEPAGE

A CRITIQUE OF THE EVIDENCE
FOR THE ISOLATION OF HIV
A SUMMARY OF THE VIEWS OF PAPADOPULOS ET. AL.

The proposal that AIDS is caused by a unique, infectious
retrovirus requires proof for the existence of such a
retrovirus. Since the announcement of the discovery of certain
laboratory phenomena claimed as proof of the existence of HIV we
have critically analysed the data and have always maintained
that no such proof exists [1-11].
A virus is a microscopic particle of particular size and shape
(morphology) which contains particular constituents (biochemical
properties) and which is able to replicate only at the behest of
living protoplasm, that is, a virus is an obligatory
intracellular parasite. Replication of a virus-like particle is
the property which defines the particle as being infectious,
that is, virus-like particle + replication = virus. These
defining data determine that the only way to prove the existence
of a novel (new) virus is to (i) isolate viral-like particles,
that is, first obtain the particles separate from everything
else; (ii) determine their morphological characteristics; (iii)
analyse their constituents (nucleic acid and proteins)
demonstrating that such properties are those of retroviruses and
are unique; (iv) prove that the particles are infectious, that
is, when pure particles are introduced into non-infected cell
cultures, new but identical particles appear. Only then can the
viral-like particles be deemed to a virus. In the case of
retroviruses, the steps in this procedure were developed over
the half century that preceded the AIDS era and are described in
Toplin and Sinoussi. [12,13]. These steps are:
1. Culture of putatively infected cells demonstrating that
such cultures contain retroviral-like particles, that is,
particles virtually spherical in shape with a diameter of
100-120nM and with "condensed inner bodies (cores)" and
surfaces "studded with projections (knobs)" [14].
2. Purification of a sample by ultracentrifugation through a
sucrose density gradient. A test tube containing a solution
of sucrose, ordinary table sugar, is prepared light at the
top but gradually becoming heavier towards the bottom. A
drop of supernatant (decanted) cell culture fluid is gently
placed on top of the sucrose column and the test-tube is
centrifuged for several hours at extremely high speeds. This
generates tremendous forces forcing any particles present
through the sugar solution until they reach a point where
their buoyancy prevents further penetration. For retroviral
particles this occurs where the density of the sucrose
solution reaches 1.16 gm/ml. At this the point the particles
concentrate or, to use virological terminology, this is
where the particles band. The 1.1 band is then selectively
extracted for further analysis.
3. Using the electron microscope (EM), photograph the 1.16
band proving there are particles of the correct morphology
and no other material.
4. Disrupt and analyse the constituents of such particles.
5. Introduce pure particles into a virgin culture and, by
repeating the above steps, prove that identical particles
are produced.
To date, many electron micrographs of particles claimed to be
retrovirus-like have been published. However, not one of these
micrographs demonstrates particles satisfying both main
morphological features of retroviral particles, that is, a
diameter of 100-120nM and a surface studded with knobs. (HIV
researchers are unanimous that the knobs contain a protein,
gp120, which is essential for the first step in infection and
replication, that is, for the particle to fuse with the membrane
of an uninfected cell in order that the HIV particle with its
'HIV RNA" gains access to the interior of the cell [15].
To prove the existence of HIV, both Montagnier's group in
