Re: [CTRL] 10 Reasons To Legalize ALL Drugs

The original post contained U.S. mortality data on tobacco, alcohol, legal
and illegal drugs.

I suddenly need this data. Could this be reposted with cites? This will save
me an hour or more of research.

Re: [CTRL] 10 Reasons To Legalize ALL Drugs

2000-05-15 Thread tenebroust

Another excellent point. As it does seem obvious that the "controllers" wish to
control all aspects of our lives, including one's attempt at spiritual advancement and
one's seeking after the numinous and the pursuit of happiness. Drugging us to death
with "legal" drugs and forcing us to toe the line with work and "responsibility" makes
for a docile and easily led populace, with no avenues of escape that are outside the
control of these people.

Re: [CTRL] 10 Reasons To Legalize ALL Drugs

2000-05-15 Thread tenebroust

Great article Nessie, and you make a good point, which explains why drugs are not
legal now and probably won't be for a while. It would be a matter of economics if the
holders of the patents (if there were such a thing) were the Nazi ex-patriots and our
own deep black intelligence agencies, as to whether to legalize or not, since they
would obviously do what would bring more money. Legalization may provide a broader
base to sell to thus increasing your market, but the price would come down. PLUS, and
perhaps most importantly, IF the stuff stays illegal then the money gained by its sale
can be hidden and used for nefarious purposes, while "clean: money from open sale
would not be.
I concede the point, but only just, after all there are other groups who would like a
piece of the pie, and who also have a vested interest in remaining "legitimate".

I've always believed the rumor that Marlboro IS set up and ready for the
legalization of pot, and from what I hear, they could have their product in
stores within one work week of the law passing.

If they do legalize pot in my lifetime...wherever it's legal to sell it,
that's where you'll find me working full time.

The war on (some) drugs is a war against personal autonomy. There is one
reason and one reason only to end the war. It's reason enough. It's your
body. You have a right to do whatever want to it. Anybody who takes
control of our body against your will, any control whatsoever, of any
part of it, even if they honestly believe it's for your own good, is no
better than a rapist. Period. End of story.

Who owns YOUR body, you or the state?

Re: [CTRL] 10 Reasons To Legalize ALL Drugs

2000-05-14 Thread tenebroust

You are absolutely right, of course, regarding the uses of information for propaganda.
I am in favor of people being allowed to smoke as well, and to drink to their hearts
content. Anyway, it is usually the "Nazi" abolitionists who quote numbers to stir up
response, especially when you can throw in childhood statistics, though there are
those on the liberal side who use them to support their own ideas.
I don't know what the accurate numbers are but my point was to say that the number
dead by legal, accepted means far outweighs the number dead by illegal, unaccepted
means. Is there anyone here who doubts for one minute that if Pfizer, or some other
major pharmaceutical firm held a patent for exclusive manufacturing rights to Cocaine,
or Marijuana, or Heroin, that those drugs would not be legal right now and being sold
everywhere?

> 6,000 from illegal drugs, one-third of those from adulterants.

Caused by non-entheogens (heroin, cocaine, etc)

> 400,000 tobacco

So says the National Cancer Institute's propaganda in their
"Nazi War on Smoking".

> 150,000 alcohol ?

? indeed...

> 100,000 prescription medication?

The book "Deadly Medicine: Why tens of thousands of heart
patients died in America's worst drug disaster" by Thomas J.
Moore, "tell the dramatic story of the greatest tragedy
involving a class of drugs still on the market. It reveals
why the same medical system that brings lifesaving
treatments can create catastrophe beyond imagining."
The book's prologue claims:

"This book tells the story of America's worst medical
disaster. Over just a few years, an estimated 50,000 people
died from taking drugs intended to prevent cardiac arrest.
After hundreds of thousands of patients took these drugs, a
definitive medical experiment proved that they did not
prevent cardiac arrest as doctors had believed. Instead the
drug *caused* cardiac arrest. Often the effect was so sudden
and unexpected that people literally dropped dead while
going about their normal lives. The result of this single
medical misjudgment about the properties of these drugs
produced a death toll larger then the United States' combat
losses in wars such as Korea and Vietnam. If one were to
total the deaths from every commercial airplane crash in the
history of the US aviation, the sum would not approach the
number of deaths from this episode."

While the book's dust cover reads:

"The story begins with a new heart drug created by the
research labs of the 3M company. In animals this drug
appears usually effective in suppressing irregular
heartbeats. Hoping for a blockbuster, 3M launches clinical
tests and plans how to seize the market from competing
companies. But as the medical researchers test Tambocor, as
the drug is called, the first signs of trouble appear. At
Stanford University, a doctor warns that this type of drug
could be dangerous. Other experiments fail to demonstrate
the effective benefits of such drugs. But with support of
clinical doctors and millions invested in Tambocor, 3M moves
ahead and seeks approval from the FDA. Other companies
follow suit with similar drugs.

"Questions about the safety of Tambocor have already
reached the medical review staff at the FDA in Washington
D.C., where a behind the scenes drama takes place. 3M
presses for approval of Tambocor, while the FDA tries to
interpret the meaning of reports that some patients who have
taken the drug suddenly drop dead. Without a green light
from the FDA, Tambocor may be doomed.

"The final chapter in this story unfolds as 3M gets to the
market place, and using all the skills of a modern
pharmaceutical manufacturer, persuades doctors to use
Tambocor. At the same time, an important clinical trial
begins. The National institute of Health launch an
experiment with more then a thousand patients to measure the
benefits of Tambocor and two similar drugs. The shocking
results of that study -- and the response of doctors and
companies who promoted these drugs -- bring the tragedy to a
powerful conclusion.

"Deadly Medicine is a human story about the brilliant and
driven doctors who worked on Tambocor and similar heart
drugs -- at pharmaceutical companies, within the FDA, and at
university medical research centers. It provides a vivid and
disturbing account of the system by which drugs are
discovered, tested and marketed to doctors. Through the
tragic story of how tens of thousands of patients died
prematurely from one class of heart drugs, Deadly Medicine
also exposes major flaws in the system."

A few snippets from the book:

"13,445 deaths occurred in New York state in one year
due to medical mistakes in hospitals medical mistakes in
United States hospitals kill 168,000 persons each year. Once
again, this figure is an order of magnitude -- an
approximation for a range of 150,000 to 200,000 death each
year. That makes medical mistakes of doctors and hospitals
the nation's third largest cause of death, surpassed only by
heart disease and cancer, and exceeding stroke." p.231

"Temple, perhaps the only one to appreciate how many
patients died through the inappropriate use of
antiarrhythmic drugs, got angry.
"'one of the impressions I kept getting is that the
enormous magnitude of what we are seeing here is not
appreciated,' temple said. 'This is, in fact, bigger then
anything we have encountered in a mortality trial except
AZT." (the 'AIDS' drug) p.254

Re: [CTRL] 10 Reasons To Legalize ALL Drugs

2000-05-11 Thread tenebroust

Weel, Bill, glad to hear that you are vocal for legalization. I favor the widespread
availability of drugs of every kind, as long as people are able to make informed
decisions about the effects such things have on the body and are not forced to partake
or bombarded with propaganda from the pro's or con's. I think that what one does to
one's own self, EVEN IF HARMFUL to one's self, including suicide and drilling a hole
in your head, as well as amputating limbs just 'cause you can't stand having them any
more, should not only be legal but should be the norm. Personal fulfillment is more
than just going to work for the man and being forced to make do with the poor quality
of "approved" highs. If a woman can abort a fetus (and I think she has the right to
do so, though I don't particularly like the idea of it) then certainly someone should
be allowed to take a possibly "dangerous" drug (which probably is not dangerous at
all. Anyways how many people die from illegal drugs every year as compared with
"legal" drugs (pharmaceuticals, alcohol, tobacco)? I'll bet they aren't even close!

[CTRL] 10 Reasons To Legalize ALL Drugs

2000-05-09 Thread William Shannon

10 Reasons to legalise all drugs
1 Address the real issues
For too long policy makers have used prohibition as a smoke screen to avoid
addressing the social and economic factors that lead people to use drugs.
Most illegal and legal drug use is recreational. Poverty and despair are at
the root of most problematic drug use and it is only by addressing these
underlying causes that we can hope to significantly decrease the number of
problematic users.

2 Eliminate the criminal market place

The market for drugs is demand-led and millions of people demand illegal
drugs. Making the production, supply and use of some drugs illegal creates a
vacuum into which organised crime moves. The profits are worth billions of
pounds.

Legalisation forces organised crime from the drugs trade, starves them of
income and enables us to regulate and control the market (i.e. prescription,
licensing, laws on sales to minors, advertising regulations etc.)

3 Massively reduce crime

The price of illegal drugs is determined by a demand-led, unregulated market.
Using illegal drugs is very expensive. This means that some dependent users
resort to stealing to raise funds (accounting for 50% of UK property crime -
estimated at £2 billion a year). Most of the violence associated with illegal
drug dealing is caused by its illegality

Legalisation would enable us to regulate the market, determine a much lower
price and remove users need to raise funds through crime. Our legal system
would be freed up and our prison population dramatically reduced, saving
billions. Because of the low price, cigarette smokers do not have to steal to
support their habits. There is also no violence associated with the legal
tobacco market.

4 Drug users are a majority

Recent research shows that nearly half of all 15-16 year olds have used an
illegal drug. Up to one and a half million people use ecstasy every weekend.
Amongst young people, illegal drug use is seen as normal. Intensifying the
‘war on drugs’ is not reducing demand. In Holland, where cannabis laws are
far less harsh, drug usage is amongst the lowest in Europe.

Legalisation accepts that drug use is normal and that it is a social issue,
not a criminal justice one. How we deal with it is up to all of us to decide.

In 1970 there were 9000 convictions or cautions for drug offences and 15% of
young people had used an illegal drug. In 1995 the figures were 94 000 and
45%. Prohibition doesn’t work.

5 Provide access to truthful information and education

A wealth of disinformation about drugs and drug use is given to us by
ignorant and prejudiced policy-makers and media who peddle myths upon lies
for their own ends. This creates many of the risks and dangers associated
with drug use.

Legalisation would help us to disseminate open, honest and truthful
information to users and non-users to help them to make decisions about
whether and how to use. We could begin research again on presently illicit
drugs to discover all their uses and effects - both positive and negative.

6 Make all drug use safer

Prohibition has led to the stigmatisation and marginalisation of drug users.
Countries that operate ultra-prohibitionist policies have very high rates of
HIV infection amongst injecting users. Hepatitis C rates amongst users in the
UK are increasing substantially.

In the UK in the ‘80’s clean needles for injecting users and safer sex
education for young people were made available in response to fears of HIV.
Harm reduction policies are in direct opposition to prohibitionist laws.

7 Restore our rights and responsibilities

Prohibition unnecessarily criminalises millions of otherwise law-abiding
people. It removes the responsibility for distribution of drugs from policy
makers and hands it over to unregulated, sometimes violent dealers.

Legalisation restores our right to use drugs responsibly to change the way we
think and feel. It enables controls and regulations to be put in place to
protect the vulnerable.

8 Race and Drugs

Black people are over ten times more likely to be imprisoned for drug
offences than whites. Arrests for drug offences are notoriously discretionary
allowing enforcement to easily target a particular ethnic group. Prohibition
has fostered this stereotyping of black people.

Legalisation removes a whole set of laws that are used to disproportionately
bring black people into contact with the criminal justice system. It would
help to redress the over representation of black drug offenders in prison.

9 Global Implications

The illegal drugs market makes up 8% of all world trade (around £300 billion
a year). Whole countries are run under the corrupting influence of drug
cartels. Prohibition also enables developed countries to wield vast political
power over producer nations under the auspices of drug control programmes.

Legalisation returns lost revenue to the legitimate taxed economy and removes
some of the high-level corruption. It also removes a tool of political
interference
