I couldn't help but laugh as I read the following entry in Andrew Sullivan's weblog: "People ask why Americans tend to sympathize more with Israelis than Palestinians. It's not racism. It's a recognition that, for all their failings, the Israelis live in the same moral universe as we do. The Palestinians palpably, brazenly do not." OUR MORAL UNIVERSE, AND THEIRS Sullivan is a bloated bag of wind begging to be punctured, and his delusions about Israeli benevolence certainly have been pricked by the news that the 60 or so Israelis being held by the US since 9/11 are what Fox News calls "part of a long-running effort to spy on American government officials." And that's not all: while "there is no indication the Israelis were involved in the Sept. 11 attacks," we are told, "investigators suspect that they may have gathered intelligence about the attacks in advance and not shared it." If the Israelis had foreknowledge of the 9/11 attacks, and failed to inform us, then just what moral universe are they living in? Surely one many light-years from our own. YOU READ IT HERE FIRST When the news first broke that not only Arabs are being held in the wake of 9/11, to my knowledge I was the only columnist to deal with the subject of the mysterious Israelis in custody: "Israel and 9/11 – Feds holding 60 Israelis in connection with 9/11 – Why?" While the Washington Post assured us that the Israeli detainees were only "observing a time-honored tradition in their country – touring the world after their mandatory service in the Israeli military," I was more than a little skeptical: "Something tells me these guys are no ordinary tourists, but since the US Government is keeping mum about everything connected with this investigation, we just don't know." THE PLOT SICKENS Ah, but now some government officials are talking, and we know a lot more. We know that some of the detainees have been identified as Israeli military or intelligence agents, and that some failed polygraph tests when asked whether they had engaged in covert operations "against and in the United States." We also know, courtesy of Fox News, that as many as 140 Israeli agents may have been rounded up in the US before 9/11: the extent of Israel's covert action operation is described as "sprawling." A GOOD GUESS What were they doing here? Besides infiltrating a whole laundry list of government agencies, including the DEA, the FBI, military bases, and even targeting the private homes of government officials, they were also conducting surveillance on a group of Arab immigrants in California that authorities believe have connections to the 9/11 plot. I'll admit that the following was sheer speculation on my part, but it looks like I was dead right. As I wrote in November: "In rounding up untold hundreds of mostly Arab Muslim men, and interviewing thousands more, the Ashcroft Sweep is clearly designed to gather information that might lead them to the remaining conspirators. It could be that the Israelis, or at least some of them, fall into this category: while not being directly involved, maybe they know something." RETALIATION PLUS What did they know, and when did they know it? That is the question that must now be answered, and pronto. For remember what the President said: "You are either with us, or you are with the terrorists." If the Israelis had advance notice of 9/11 – via their spy network in the US, which kept the hijackers and their associates under surveillance – then this is "harboring" terrorists, by any definition of the term. Look what happened to the Taliban when they harbored bin Laden. If Israel did indeed betray us, and let 3,500 people die at the World Trade Center, then they deserve what the Afghanis got – plus a little bit more. WITH FRIENDS LIKE THESE… At least Mullah Omar and the Taliban never made any bones about the depth of their contempt for the US. Israel, on the other hand, pretends to be our staunchest ally, more royalist than the king when it comes to confronting the declared enemies of the West. Yet an undeclared enemy, posing as a friend, is in many ways a greater potential threat – as, perhaps, we are beginning to learn. CLASSIFIED AND CONFIRMED When asked for details about the detention of the Israelis, a highly placed investigator huffed that "Evidence linking these Israelis to 9-11 is classified, I cannot tell you about evidence that has been gathered. It is classified information." Aside from affirming that such evidence exists, this same source admitted to the Los Angeles Times that there were certain "tie-ins" with 9/11. Some patriotic law enforcement officials seem to have leaked just enough information to practically confirm our worst suspicions. Carlos Vignali was freed from prison on Inauguration Day because a presidential commutation of sentence released him from the remaining nine years of a 15-year term imposed for masterminding a cocaine smuggling racket. Outrage is growing over the case, principally because Vignali's father, Horacio, became a major contributor to Democratic causes after his son's arrest. Mr Vignali, a multi-millionaire who owned a $9 million (£6 million) house that once belonged to Sylvester Stallone, gave at least £31,000 to the election campaign of Gray Davis, the Democrat who became governor of California in 1998. The prosecutors in the Vignali case were particularly angry about the pardon because only 18 months ago, after heavy political lobbying, they were asked if they would support a reduction in sentence, but strongly opposed the idea. Todd Jones, then US attorney for Minnesota, where Vignali was prosecuted, said: "I can't tell you how strongly we registered our objection." The prosecutors said they were never approached by the White House when a commutation was being considered by Mr Clinton but, if they had been, would have argued vigorously against it. As Mr Bush tried to patch up the damage done by the withdrawal of Linda Chavez as his Secretary of Labour, Mr Clinton made clear that he doubted the legitimacy of his successor's presidency. Full of party spirit at a Democratic rally in Chicago to honour Bill Daley, chairman of Al Gore's unsuccessful campaign, Mr Clinton said: "I think he [Mr Daley] did a brilliant job in leading Vice-President Gore to victory. "They thought the election was over, the Republicans did. By the time it was over, our candidate had won the popular vote, and the only way they could win the election was to stop the voting in Florida." On Tuesday, Mr Bush made clear that he was not interested in seeing Mr Clinton pursued in the courts for offences he might have committed during the Monica Lewinsky affair. Ari Fleischer, Mr Bush's spokesman, declined to criticise the President's remarks, saying only: "There is a tradition in this country of presidents leaving office with respect for their successors. I'm certain that President Clinton will want to follow that." Republicans in Washington were already reeling from the defeat of Miss Chavez's nomination. She withdrew her candidacy after it was disclosed that she had housed an illegal immigrant nine years ago and might have paid her for housekeeping chores. Other opponents of the Bush administration, which takes power on January 20, shifted their attention to the nomination of John Ashcroft as Attorney-General. But yesterday, he woke up consigned to history by a twist of the Supreme Court's knife. Far in the distance he could see the keys to the White House disappearing in the hands of George W Bush and his triumphant Texas posse. Finally, after 36 days of legal and political trauma, there was one last conference call with his lawyers, a final flurry of e-mails, and a conciliatory telephone call from Bill Clinton in Ireland. Then it was time to sit down at one of his two laptop computers and write the speech that announced his concession to a man he regards as intellectually, politically and morally beneath him. He will be tortured by what-ifs. What if he had won his home state of Tennessee? He would be President by now. What if he had deployed President Clinton to Arkansas earlier? What if he had not tried so hard to be his own man and ridden harder on the successes of the Clinton years? In 1970, Al Gore saw his father, Sen Albert Gore of Tennessee, lose his seat thanks largely to a devious, nasty campaign run against him by Richard Nixon's Republicans. In his concession speech, Sen Gore told his constituents: "The causes for which we fought are not dead. The truth shall rise again." The day after his defeat, he spoke to his 22-year-old son and asked him what he would do if he had been rejected by the same voters he had served for 32 years. Mr Gore told his father: "Dad, I would take the 32 years." Six years after his father's defeat, Mr Gore's own political career began as he was elected first to the House of Representatives, continuing a family cycle which was meant to culminate in the presidency. It will be the dashing of those hopes, as much as the pain of losing, which will have been preying on Mr Gore's mind yesterday. Like Nixon, Mr Gore is a curiously friendless man. He believes that few are worthy of his trust, and has none of the embracing friendliness of Mr Clinton, or former President Bush. It is telling that he relies so much on his family for support and advice. His closest advisers are his wife, Tipper, his daughters, Karenna and Kristin, and his brother-in-law, Frank Hunger. Despite his claims to be working for the working man, few Americans, even among the majority who voted for him, were ever convinced that Mr Gore was working for anyone but himself. It was an impression confirmed by his single-minded pursuit of the presidency. Now that he must vacate the Naval Observatory, the Vice-President's official residence, it is not clear where he will go. His wife owns a small house outside Washington DC which she leases to Mr Hunger. Mr Gore owns a few acres in Tennessee, which belonged to his father. His financial situation is not impressive for a man of 52. He has few savings, no stocks and was attacked in the press two years ago when he was found to give almost nothing to charity. He tried to remedy that by making a large donation last year. He is also unusually unqualified for a man vacating such a high political office. Unlike most of his political generation, he has no professional qualifications. After graduating from Harvard, he dropped out of divinity and then law school in Tennessee. Despite his reputation for legal wrangling, he is not a lawyer like Mr Clinton. Nor does he have any business experience, like Mr Bush. The only work he has done besides politics is journalism, after his father got him a job with the Tennessean. Given his poor relationship with the press, it is hard to imagine him returning to Grub Street. He may however write another book after the success of his last book, Earth in the Balance, his ruminations on the environment. America's traditional route for ex-politicians in need of cash is lobbying or corporate work. But Mr Gore lacks the charm to be a popular board member, and it is hard to imagine him sticking on a grin and joining the backslapping lobbyists. His much-touted virility would rule him out from following the path of the defeated candidate in 1996, Bob Dole, who went on to make television advertisements describing treatments for erectile dysfunction. One theory is that Mr Gore will assume the presidency of his Alma Mater, Harvard, which will soon be vacant. That would satisfy his craving for intellectual company. Harvard also has a reputation as a retirement home for liberal politicians. To the fury of Democrats, Mr Bush's brother Jeb, the Florida governor, said he would approve electors appointed by the legislature in defiance of the courts. Joe Lieberman, Mr Gore's running mate, said the legislature's decision was "just wrong and sets a terrible precedent" that "threatens to put us in a constitutional crisis". As the arguments raged, the Vice-President's fading White House hopes were focused on a lorry carrying 462,000 ballots through Florida and nine federal Supreme Court justices preparing to hear his arguments today. The 162 metal boxes of ballots were in a yellow Ryder lorry, rented by Palm Beach County election officials, which slowly made its way north to the state capital, Tallahassee. In a scene reminiscent of O J Simpson's 1994 attempt to flee from the Los Angeles police after his wife was murdered, television news channels covered the 450-mile journey live using aerial footage from helicopters. A circuit court judge had ordered that 1.1 million ballots should be transferred from Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties to Tallahassee. Mr Gore believes that the disputed ballots carry enough votes to give him victory in Florida. But with the clock working against them, Democrats were angry that the judge said he wouldn't consider whether they should be recounted until a hearing tomorrow. Gore lawyers immediately lodged an appeal. Mr Gore's chances of overturning Mr Bush's 537-vote Florida victory, which was certified on Sunday, were further damaged by the Florida legislature's decision to hold a special session to choose the state's 25 electoral college members. Mr Bush needs the 25 electoral college votes to win the White House and the legislature's decision was seen as a "fire wall" should Mr Gore overcome the long odds and prevail in the courts. A second fire wall for the Texas governor is the House of Representatives in Washington, which would become a factor should there be a dispute over electoral college members. Republicans hold a narrow majority there. Mr Gore faces a major hurdle today when the US Supreme Court, the country's ultimate legal authority, prepares to intervene. Mr Bush's lawyers brought the appeal, arguing that the Florida Supreme Court exceeded its powers by waiving the statutory deadline for hand recounts to be completed. If the court rules against Mr Gore, he is likely to have no option but to end his legal fight. Oral arguments will be heard today and a judgment is expected by Monday. Mr Gore, whose lawyers advised him that the federal Supreme Court would not take the case, has been intensely critical of two of its nine justices. ' Electronic Telegraph-Wednesday 29 November 2000 Democrats play for the long game By Toby Harnden in Washington DESPITE their rhetoric about the "will of the people" and "every vote must be counted", Democrats on secondment to Florida and playing backstop in Washington privately accept the near certainty that the game will very soon be up. Al Gore and his running mate, Joe Lieberman, face almost insurmountable legal obstacles and public opinion is turning against them. Given these realities, the five hours Senator Tom Daschle and Representative Dick Gephardt spent in Tallahassee this week championing Mr Gore's cause was a surprise. "Hey guys, how are you?", asked a studiously casual VPOTUS (Vice-President of the United States) seated at his dining table in Washington at the start of a televised conference call between "Tom and Dick" and "Al and Joe". But contrived as it was, the call showed that Mr Gore's battle for the prize he has yearned for since childhood is, paradoxically, about more than him and more than the presidency. Even if - or perhaps because - Mr Gore will never become POTUS, Democrats have judged that there is much to gain from spinning matters out. Put simply, the more resentment there is towards a President George W Bush, the more likely Republicans will be to lose control of both Houses of Congress in the mid-term elections of 2002 and the White House two years later. This explains why the comments of Mr Gephardt, who nurses ambitions for the presidency in 2004 and is a long-time foe of Mr Gore, seemed calculated not to boost Mr Gore's legal case but to push the argument that Mr Bush could never be a legitimate president. He said: "Under the Freedom of Information Act somebody can come here, a professor or some other academic, and count these votes in the days ahead. So if we don't find out who won and who had the most votes, we're going to find out later. "Wouldn't it be a terrible thing for the country to find out a month or two from now that you already had the national popular vote by 300,000 votes in the country? How terrible would it be to find out that you also had the most votes in Florida and should have won this election?" The fact that Mr Gore narrowly won the popular vote is an irrelevancy because the person who wins 270 electoral college votes in the victor. But Democrats have repeatedly been using this statistic to undermine Mr Bush. Even more insidious was the threat that some "independent" individual could come along after Mr Bush was inaugurated, decide every dimpled chad from Miami-Dade had been a vote for Mr Gore. -Caveat Lector- Electronic Telegraph-Tuesday 14 November 2000 Republicans begin to air doubts over Bush tactics By Toby Harnden, in Austin GEORGE W BUSH was facing increasing criticism from his own party yesterday for his handling of the post-election struggle for Florida. Some Republicans even criticised him for turning to James Baker III, one of his father's most steadfast allies, to represent him in Florida. Mr Baker's bid to prevent hand recounts failed yesterday, giving Democrats a potentially crucial advantage as final vote totals were being calculated. William Safire, the New York Times columnist and former speechwriter for President Nixon, wrote that Mr Baker was "always more of a lawyer than a politician" and had made tactical errors in Florida. Despite his vast political and governmental experience, Mr Baker, 70, a Texas lawyer who became Secretary of State during President Bush's administration, seemed to have miscalculated public opinion in Florida and to have been outmanoeuvred by his Democratic adversaries. Having initially portrayed Mr Gore as the candidate who trusted lawyers rather than the electoral process, the Bush campaign made a volte face on Saturday. Alarmed that hand recounts in four Democratic counties would hand Florida to Mr Gore, Mr Baker announced a lawsuit aimed at stopping them. The Bush campaign's initial error was failing to request recounts in Republican counties within the stipulated 72 hours. In the early stages of the election aftermath, Republicans were so sure they had won they did not consider this necessary. Saturday's decision appeared to compound this mistake. Instead of calling for the 72-hour deadline to be waived so that hand recounts could be held in all 67 Florida counties, Mr Baker sought - and failed - to prevent the four already applied for under the usual procedures. Members of the Bush campaign admitted yesterday that this was not only a risky legal gambit but also one that had forced Mr Bush to cede the moral high ground he had occupied earlier in the week. Mr Baker, a constant behind-the-scenes figure during the campaign, has now indicated that the Bush campaign may be forced to look for extra electoral college votes by demanding recounts in Iowa, Wisconsin, New Mexico and Oregon. The chances of Mr Bush winning all these states through recounts are remote. Moreover, having argued that it was Mr Gore who was prolonging the nation's agony, any such move could be politically disastrous for any Geroge W Bush presidency. There were mutterings within the Bush camp that the Texas governor's leaking of White House appointments and attempts to persuade the public that he was concentrating on planning for his presidency were beginning to look foolish. They could also alienate the moderate opinion he would need behind him if he were to govern the country. Last Thursday, he decided not to dispatch a team of some 70 lawyers and campaign workers from Austin because his brother Jeb told him the state party had enough strength on the ground. Jeb Bush had assured him in advance that he would carry Florida and, on election night, that the vote was his. Some Republicans winced when they heard that Mr Bush had quoted his brother in his second conversation with Mr Gore - prompting the Vice President to remark that Florida was not in Jeb Bush's gift. Mr Bush's apparent complacency since the election mirrors his approach in its closing days. Nine days before the vote, he took a full Sunday off to spend time at his ranch and spent valuable time in states such as California, Oregon, Washington and New Jersey that he was unlikely to win. His action would, to the dismay of Britain and other European allies, force a fundamental rethink of Nato. With the Texas governor edging ahead in the final stages of the presidential campaign, his senior national security aide, Condoleezza Rice, said that Mr Bush wants peacekeeping in the Balkans to become the sole responsibility of the Europeans as part of a "new division of labour" within the Atlantic alliance. It was time for the Europeans to "step up to their responsibilities", Miss Rice said. "Unless we set this as a firm goal we will never get it done." Mr Bush has said repeatedly that he wants America's European allies to shoulder more of the burden in the Balkans, despite the fact that the 11,400 US troops on the ground make up less than one-fifth of the 65,000-strong Nato force in the region. Miss Rice's remarks are the first indication that he plans to go further, restricting America's role to providing air and logistics support and holding its 120,000-strong force in Europe in reserve for wars elsewhere. The move could lead to pressure within America to scale back the number of troops in Europe, although Miss Rice insisted that it was not a prelude to withdrawal. Miss Rice said in an interview with the New York Times: "The United States is the only power that can handle a showdown in the Gulf, mount the kind of force that is needed to protect Saudi Arabia and deter a crisis in the Taiwan Strait. Extended peacekeeping detracts from our readiness and these kinds of global missions." Mr Bush's thinking is in sharp contrast to Al Gore, the Democratic candidate, who favours a wider role for American troops in preventing conflicts. Most European members of Nato, including Britain, want the US to continue to share the risks of operations in the Balkans. Wesley Clark, the retired US Army general, who commanded Nato in the Kosovo campaign, said: "If we want to have any influence on Nato in the Balkans we are probably at the bottom line . . . If we want to be part of this we can't do much less." Mr Bush scents electoral victory after weeks of uncertainty over whether he or Mr Gore would break first for the finishing tape at the end of their year-long marathon. With little more than two weeks to go until the election, a grinning Mr Bush waggled his eyebrows and gave a silent thumbs-up when asked if he liked the latest poll numbers, the best of which put him 10 points ahead. Their wealth and power were second-to-none throughout the 200 hundred years in which they guarded the royal-blue bloodlines of Europe and kept the secrets of Solomon's Temple, which they unearthed. Thinking this way, one is led to ponder the theories of Zechariah Sitchin and Lloyd Pye, who contend that humans were bred by a higher intelligence. Given the preeminence of the Templars -â whose rise to power is nothing short of remarkable â- were they, and the secrets they held, part of that greater intelligence ? The Templars' legacy lives today in many forms To many, the Templars are alive and well today, but under other names like Masons, Rosicrusians, and the Priory of Sion. Legends of the Templars connect these blue bloods with the knowledge of the true purposes of Solomonâs Temple and its connection to the Egypt-ET myth. Secrets always include the protection of the Royal blood line, which needs protection at some deeper esoteric level, as if shielding some hybrid project from a higher intelligence. Yet, according to anthropologist Steven Mizrach, the Merovingians' most unusual chronicler is Gerard de Sede, who claims the "fabulous race" descends from extraterrestrials from Sirius. Mirvech also points out that in the ET stronghold in Stenay (also known as Satanicum), frogs frequently fall from the sky. The founder of the royal line Merovech was said to be of two fathers.
