Professor Andrew Whiten, from St Andrews University, told a conference at the Royal Society of Edinburgh that our ancestors evolved through a form of co-operation not very different from the ideals of communism. Human beings were able to dominate the world against predators such as big cats and wolves, he said, only by adopting socialist values. All members of the prehistoric tribes were considered equal, he said, and food and clothing was equally shared. "Humans are the most social species on Earth and our ancestors formed hunter-gatherer groups which pulled together to adapt to their new lifestyle," he said. "Unlike every other species, they had an egalitarian culture where everything was shared out equally: no other animal does that. "There was also no hierarchy in the society or tribal chiefs, as anyone who tried to lead was pushed back down by the others. Everyone was considered to be equal and they lived in a culture of primitive communism. "We might expect as the products of evolution our ancestors would be selfish, but it was their ability to work together and support each other which made them more successful than any other. "This supportive culture allowed technology and skills to be passed down and improved with each generation. "Although this egalitarian lifestyle is not present in most of the world today, it may be resting dormant within us waiting to be reawakened. "It has been suggested the next step of evolution for humans would be to form a giant super-organism which uses the Internet as a nerve centre." Amen. Kropotkin is too often overlooked as a political philosopher. I've seen studies of community crisis response which argue persuasively that during a crisis such as a hurricane, earthquake, etc., the community goes into a roughly three-day cycle: the first day and a half *no government exists*--and everyone pulls together in pure Kropotskian mutual aid; then slowly individual greed and self-interest start to reassert themselves, at the same time that government is beginning to pull itself back onto its feet and get its own people into the disaster-relief game. Recovery to the approximate status quo is complete by the end of the third day, with emergency personnel (police, military, civil relief) in control of the situation. (I've seen this in action during hurricane relief more than once.)
