Oliver North lets fly on TV
By Marcus Warren in New York
(Filed: 20/03/2003)

Col Oliver North, the officer at the heart of the
Iran-Contra scandal, has emerged as the first star of the wartime US
television ratings battle, after some highly jingoistic reporting from the
front line.

Embedded with his former comrades-at-arms, the ex-Marine has already
achieved more celebrity, or notoriety, for his reports than at any time
since his first brush with fame during the 1980s.

Some awful racket is going to come down in that Baghdad urban renewal
project, he told viewers of Fox News this week, his joking euphemism for
the air strikes soon to be unleashed on the city.

Gloating celebration of US military might are the trademarks of Rupert
Murdoch's news channel, but Col North has taken the trend to new
extremes.

Having apparently blurted out the time for the start of military operations,
he drew a lurid picture of the fate awaiting Iraqis foolish enough to resist
helicopter assaults.

The colonel, whose convictions for destroying documents and obstructing
Congress during the Iran-Contra scandal were later overturned, has already
fronted a show called War Stories for the channel.

From SMH

Foundations are in place for martial law in the US
By Ritt Goldstein
July 27 2002

Recent pronouncements from the Bush Administration and national security initiatives
put in place in the
Reagan era could see internment camps and martial law in the United States.

When president Ronald Reagan was considering invading Nicaragua he issued a series of
executive orders
that provided the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) with broad powers in the
event of a
crisis such as violent and widespread internal dissent or national opposition
against a US military invasion
abroad. They were never used.

But with the looming possibility of a US invasion of Iraq, recent pronouncements by
President George Bush's
domestic security chief, Tom Ridge, and an official with the US Civil Rights
Commission should fire concerns
that these powers could be employed or a de facto drift into their deployment could
occur.

On July 20 the Detroit Free Press ran a story entitled Arabs in US could be held,
official warns. The story
referred to a member of the US Civil Rights Commission who foresaw the possibility of
internment camps for
Arab Americans. FEMA has practised for such an occasion.

FEMA, whose main role is disaster response, is also responsible for handling US
domestic unrest.

From 1982-84 Colonel Oliver North assisted FEMA in drafting its
civil defence preparations. Details of these plans emerged during the 1987 Iran-Contra
scandal.

They included executive orders providing for suspension of the constitution, the
imposition of martial law,
internment camps, and the turning over of government to the president and FEMA.

A Miami Herald article on July 5, 1987, reported that the former FEMA director Louis
Guiffrida's deputy, John
Brinkerhoff, handled the martial law portion of the planning. The plan was said to be
similar to one Mr
Giuffrida had developed earlier to combat a national uprising by black militants. It
provided for the detention
of at least 21million American Negroes' in assembly centres or relocation camps.

Today Mr Brinkerhoff is with the highly influential Anser Institute for Homeland
Security. Following a request
by the Pentagon in January that the US military be allowed the option of deploying
troops on American
streets, the institute in February published a paper by Mr Brinkerhoff arguing the
legality of this.

He alleged that the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, which has long been accepted as
prohibiting such
deployments, had simply been misunderstood and misapplied.

The preface to the article also provided the revelation that the national plan he had
worked on, under Mr
Giuffrida, was approved by Reagan, and actions were taken to implement it.

By April, the US military had created a Northern Command to aid Homeland defence.
Reuters reported that
the command is mainly expected to play a supporting role to local authorities.

However, Mr Ridge, the Director of Homeland Security, has just advocated a review of
US law regarding the
use of the military for law enforcement duties.

Disturbingly, the full facts and final contents of Mr Reagan's national plan remain
uncertain. This is in part
because President Bush took the unusual step of sealing the Reagan presidential papers
last November.
However, many of the key figures of the Reagan era are part of the present
administration, including John
Poindexter, to whom Oliver North later reported.

At the time of the Reagan initiatives, the then attorney-general, William French
Smith, wrote to the national
security adviser, Robert McFarlane: I believe that the role assigned to the Federal
Emergency Management
Agency in the revised Executive Order exceeds its proper function as a co-ordinating
agency for emergency
preparedness ... this department and others have repeatedly raised serious policy and
legal objections to an
'emergency czar' role for FEMA.

Criticism of the Bush Administration's response to September11 echoes Mr Smith's
warning. On June 7 the
former presidential counsel John Dean spoke of America's sliding into a
constitutional dictatorship and
martial law.

Ritt Goldstein is an investigative journalist and a former leader in the movement for
US law enforcement
accountability. He revealed exclusively in the Herald last week the Bush
Administration's plans for a domestic
spying system more pervasive than the Stasi network in East Germany.

Ollie-Osama e-mail myth fools war expert
Marine colonel, Fox anchor, spread North-bin Laden fable

An Internet spoof artist claimed two high-profile victims when an Afghanistan
war expert and the Fox News Channel anchor interviewing him both fell for an
e-mail hoax that's been circulating since Sept. 11.

The hoax goes like this: Retired Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North, while
testifying in the 1987 Iran-Contra hearings, called Osama bin Laden the
world's most dangerous terrorist and said he was targeting him and possibly
his family. North cited the terrorist, so the story goes, to justify spending
tax money to beef up his home security.

Everything but the name of the terrorist is true.

North named Beirut terrorist Abu Nidal, not bin Laden. The wiseguy who penned
the original e-mail – which by now has been forwarded to thousands, if not
millions of unsuspecting Americans – merely substituted bin Laden for Nidal
in telling the story. By offering a kernel of truth, the story appeared
credible.

Even a fellow decorated Marine, retired Col. Dick Esau of New York, fell for
it.

Appearing on Fox News as a war expert Monday, Esau told the story of North
and bin Laden to illustrate his point that the U.S. had intelligence on bin
Laden early on and failed to act on it.

We didn't do anything at that time, that I know of, Esau said.

The news host interviewing him in Fox's New York studios, Diane Dimond,
claimed to recall the North-bin Laden testimony.

I remember that, she asserted.

It's not the first time a TV news network and expert panelists have bitten
hard on an e-mail hoax.

Last year, during a debate between Hillary Clinton and Rep. Rick Lazio,
WCBS-TV political reporter Marcia Kramer, quoting almost verbatim from an
anonymous e-mail, asked them about federal Bill 602P. She said that under
the bill now before Congress, the U.S. Postal Service would be able to bill
e-mail users 5 cents for every e-mail they send.

In answering the question, both Clinton and Lazio fell for the bogus bill, as
WorldNetDaily first reported.

There's no such bill and never was, which should have been obvious to anyone,
particularly a U.S. lawmaker and seasoned journalist acting as debate
moderator, familiar with bill numbering. (No bill ends in a letter, and they
start with either HR, for House of Representatives, or S, for Senate.)

My response to this:

In your Ollie Hoax (appropriate at that) you write

  Retired Marine Col. Oliver North

Oliver North was a LIEUTENANT Colonel. I guess he's got you horn-
sswagglldded, too, eh, what? Just like Congress, expecting him to be
honourable and cooperative? The facts don't make the man if the man
can make the facts better than they really are.

One thing I have a hard time abiding by is the notion that Ollie was
convicted but slipped out of the noose on a technicality
(leathernecks have, well, strong necks and he held on at the
gallows). I believe he went through the Naval Academy while they
still made officers and gentlemen and as one such, he should have
volunteered to serve his time (Reagan or Bush woulda pardoned him
anyway). Character, what a character.

  reports Jason Burke

  Iraq: special report

  Sunday February 27, 2000

  Saddam Hussein lured stars
of British stage and screen to
  Iraq to make an epic
  propaganda film. But events
  took a farcical turn even
  before they landed in decrepit
  Baghdad.

  Oliver Reed, John Barron
(C.J. in The Rise and Fall of
  Reginald Perrin ) and a
  number of other top British
  actors accepted roles in the
film, The Great Question, at a
  time when London still viewed
the Iraqi dictator as a 'good
guy'. The film told the story of
a revolt by the Iraqis against
  British colonial rule in 1920.

  Unlimited funds were provided
  by the Directorate of Cinema
  and National Theatre and
  Saddam's agents were sent
out to hire the best available

  approached Edward Fox and
  representatives of Vanessa
  Redgrave. Both turned them

  However, many others
  accepted - not least because

  explained. Most opted to drive
for 14 hours across the desert
to Jordan on their way out.

  There was only one decent
hotel in the Iraqi capital at the
  time - the al-Mansoor - but it
did not have enough rooms for
  all the actors and technicians.
  Many found themselves in
  various 'half-built,
  cockroach-infested ruins'. Nor
was the food very good. 'I
survived for weeks on end on

  Nicholas Young, who starred
  in children's sci-fi serial The

Losing A Secret War Oliver NorthAugust 11, 1999

WASHINGTON -- On July 30th, the remains of two dead American
soldiers were brought home from Colombia under the cover of
darkness to Dover Air Force Base. At 3:00 a.m. in the morning on
August 3rd, another dead American officer, Captain Jennifer Odom
was brought home in the dead of night. Unlike the days of Ronald
Reagan and George Bush, who greeted the return of U.S. military
personnel who died serving our country, Bill Clinton chose not to
 attend.

It was as if no one at the White House wanted word to spread that
five more Americans had lost their lives fighting a secret war in
Colombia; a country which produces more cocaine and heroin than
any other nation on earth. They apparently don't want us to know
that we are also on the verge of losing the world's most
threatened democracy to terrorists funded by the drug trade; and
that all of this has gotten worse since Bill Clinton was elected.

That's not to say that Bill Clinton deserves all the blame.
Colombia has been wracked by narco-terrorism for more than three
decades. But the Clinton administration has done little to
improve the situation. When Ernesto Samper was elected president
in 1994 with a campaign financed by Colombian drug traffickers,
the Clinton State Department rightly decertified Colombia as an
ally in America's war on drugs. But instead of quietly acting to
strengthen democratic forces in Colombia, the Administration
passively watched as drug violence escalated, and nearly half of
Colombia fell under the control of narco-insurgents who have
waged a campaign of terror against the government.

In May of 1998, Colombians elected a new president; Andres
Pastrana, the Conservative Party leader. His campaign focused on
ending the threat of FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of
Colombia) violence and taking forceful action against the drug
trade. But promised support from Washington never materialized,
leaving Pastrana little choice but to pursue a policy of
appeasement and negotiation; a strategy advocated by Clinton's
State Department. The result: increased violence and a 30 percent
 jump in the drug trade.

Today, ten American citizens are missing, dead, or being held
hostage by narco-terrorists in Colombia. An estimated 450
Colombian police and soldiers are now being held captive by the
FARC. Thousands more have been killed in FARC ambushes, bombings
and terrorist raids. Last month, FARC's boldest, bloodiest
offensive to date moved battle lines to within 18 miles of
Bogota, Colombia's capital. More than 118 soldiers and policemen
were killed within the span of four days. And throughout, Bill
Clinton's policies have exacerbated a deteriorating situation.

The administration's zeal for protecting human rights in Colombia
and its unwillingness to support honest and courageous efforts
like those of Colombian anti-drug chief Rosso Jose Serrano, have
left the government in Bogota little choice but to bargain with
 the narco-terrorists.

As the growing carnage demonstrates, it is an approach doomed to
failure. White House Drug Czar Barry McCaffrey was in Bogota when
the bodies of the most recent American dead were being recovered
from the wreckage of their spy plane. He returned to talk about
drug rehab and education efforts, but offered little by way of
advice on how to keep Colombia from descending into
 narco-anarchy.

Absent reasonable help from Clinton, McCaffrey, or anyone else in
the White House who claims not to have inhaled, President
Pastrana may look to one of his Andean neighbors for a way out of
his quagmire; the "Fujimori Solution." In Peru, where drugs and
terrorist insurgency had plagued the political climate for
decades, President Alberto Fujimori declared war on the
traffickers, and he meant it. It was a head-on confrontation so
brutal that many nations condemned him for violating of the
guerillas' human rights! But Fujimori's war against the Sendero
 Luminoso insurgency worked.

Unfortunately, the situation in Colombia has deteriorated to
levels President Fujimori never faced in Peru. President
Pastrana's efforts to eradicate narco-insurgency and terrorism
from Colombia by negotiation have failed. If we really do care
about human rights and the survival of a South American
democracy, we had better get engaged in a hurry.

As Robert Charles of the House Criminal Justice and Drug Policy
Subcommittee explained to me: "Congress has been trying to get
the Clinton Administration to focus on Colombia for the past half
decade. The instability we're seeing in Colombia is, to a large
extent, the result of Administration flip-flops, delays,
indifference and a general failure of resolve."

Unlike many other places where Bill Clinton has dispatched
American military forces, America's vital interests are
threatened by what's happening in Colombia.

Sovereignty Matters Oliver NorthJune 18, 1999

WASHINGTON -- Tony Blair, Bill Clinton's new best buddy, was shocked.
The June European Parliamentary elections seem to have rejected the
vaunted "Third Way" globalists in the Blair government. The
conservative Tories overwhelmed Blair's hand-picked Labor Party
liberals by a margin of 36 percent to 28 percent. This victory is all
the more significant when you consider that the Labor Party has
dominated the political landscape of Great Britain since it came to
power in April 1997. In fact, as Brits went to the polls this month,
Tony Blair's approval ratings had never been higher, thanks to his
"leadership" in NATO's Balkan Blunder. But Blair's personal popularity
wasn't enough to save the day when it came to standing up for the
Union Jack. For the first time since Margaret Thatcher sent the fleet
to win back the Falkland Islands in 1981, British sovereignty is a
 major issue in British politics.

This conservative resurgence is based on the simple premise that
national identity, autonomy and independence are more important than
the New World Order policies Tony Blair has been espousing since he
and his liberal Laborites came to power. Whether this sea change in
British politics will affect their next elections or ours remains to
be seen. "Third Way" proponents poo-poo the results as nothing more
than a minor wrinkle in the political fabric. They note that this was
nothing but an election for delegates to the European Parliament --
the body theoretically charged with administering the European Union.
While the liberals have been quick to blame their dismal showing in
the parliamentary elections on Tory leader William Hague's
"Euro-bashing," the real issue was whether Britain would retain its
own identity and sovereignty, or whether Brits would wake up one
morning in a "Europe First" society. As Hague bluntly put it when
discussing Britain's ties to the rest of Europe, "In Europe -- but not
 run by Europe."

What Blair's apologists do not want to acknowledge is that many Brits
are coming to see this conglomeration of Eurocrats as an entity whose
activities and interests are hostile to the people of the British
Isles. Among the chief goals of the European Union is the
establishment of a common currency, the Euro, which would replace the
currencies of all of the European Union member states. Unfortunately
for Tony Blair and his globalist allies, a majority of Brits don't
seem ready to surrender the British Pound.

Why? Because when Great Britain abandons the Pound it gives up a
significant measure of their national identity. The British people
have yet to become convinced that handing over their sovereignty to a
group of continental bureaucrats best known for petty wrangling, gross
incompetence, and rampant corruption is really in their best
interests. The choice the Brits face is tantamount to Bill Clinton
telling Americans that George Washington was being replaced on the
 dollar bill by Kofi Annan.

In the U.S., talk of a Continental Currency for the Americas has been
forestalled by the early start of the year 2000 presidential election
campaigns. Advocates for such a measure in the Clinton Administration
have been told to pipe down until after the race is run -- because
their internal polls show that most American's find the idea
deplorable. But similar threats do indeed lurk on our own horizons,
and if Washington's globalists have their way, Americans will indeed
face the choice between Mr. Clinton's vision of a "New World Village"
or a reassertion of our own national sovereignty. One election does
 not make a trend.

The recent balloting for a Euro Parliament may or may not portend the
kind of dramatic change in political fortunes that Margaret Thatcher's
election foretold when she and her Conservative majority came to power
in 1979. Thatcher's rise to power was indeed the beginning of a
conservative movement throughout many Western nations. But for more
than six years now, Bill Clinton and his fellow "internationalist
elites" have been telling us that their "Third Way" is the way of the
future. They have told us that "globalism" is better than nationalism,
that "constructive engagement" is more important than national
security, and that international cooperation outweighs America's
sovereignty. To the Clintons, Blairs and the rest of the globalist
gurus haunting Europe, borders don't matter. But to the rest of us,
 they do.

In repudiating Mr. Blair, the British people have demonstrated that
their tolerance for this hogwash has limits. When the day comes that
Americans find themselves facing a choice similar to that of the Brits
this month, hopefully they will recognize the importance of our own
national identity -- and realize that "sovereignty" isn't such a bad
 word afterall.

I agree with that - however, the Euro-Election turnout in UK as well as
the rest of Europe was very very low.
Grassroots UK don't seem to think that Europe has any relevance, even though
laws made in the UK by democracy can be completely overturned by
Brussels.[and are]
The old divide and rule sovereignty stuff can be seen at work in Scotland
now - where an extra layer of beaurocrats have been foisted on the taxpayer.
Our reward has been to see the newest layer of parasites impose new and
outrageous taxes on the motorist - 'pay to drive' in Scotland.
In the guise of democracy, the hideous social engineering of scotland
continues
with further oppression from the 'opportunists' of Blairs labour.
Grassroots know that Tory/Conservative in UK would have done exactly the same.
In the UK - all the most unpopular social experiments/taxes etc get introduced
in Scotland first [a fact which negates the Treaty of Union of the UK].
However, I have high hopes for Scotland and the new Scottish parliament ...
The new Scottish Parliament at Holyrood is being built directly on top of
an ancient underground labyrinth that permeates the entire city.
Hollow halls in Arthurs Seat, Calton Hill, Faeries, ETs having a city
somewhere under Holyrood - and no doubt popping onto the Parliament canteen
for lunch or perhaps ... :) secret political cabals take the lift on
down to the sub basement ... where all the lizards are etc etc etc
A new King and Sovereign will soon make Scotland into something a bit
different.
Already the Robert Burns, NWO anthem has replaced Flower of Scotland as
favoured song at the Parliament occassions ... very Brotherhood and worthwhile
lyrics by Burns its comin yet for a' that,
that man to man the world o'er
shall Lizards be ... for a' that :)
