Use ssh -Y and just start kde (or similar). CDE is not supported, is it ? ;-). Try /usr/dt/bin/dtsession on a CDE machine. Of course you need to run without a window manager on Windows (so also not -multiwindow). Staf.

I can copy and paste in the login prompt so probably the killinitclients option is the fault. Maybe an entry for the FAQ ? Maybe I propose a change for the X server then ? Can't the clipboard handler be restarted once when it is deleted ? This will let the clipboard function also for gdm with killinitclients on. Staf.
Clipboard and XDCMP
Hello, I'm having problems with getting XDCMP going. I always start de server with the following command: % X -clipboard -query host -once -fp fontserv:7000 -fullscreen (fontserv is used to get the HPUX CDE fonts) I tried to different platforms: XDCMP session to a HPUX 11.00 machine with the CDE display manager the clipboard handling is OK. XDCMP session to a Red Hat 7.2 machine with gdm clipboard doesn't work. This is all with the -56 version of the X server. gdm has the following version: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~rpm -q gdm gdm-2.2.3.1-20 Attached is the 'cygcheck -c' output, the XWin log from the working session the HPUX11 and the session to the linux machine with failing clipboard handling. greets, Staf. Scroll wheel as middle mouse button.
I already reported this once before but got no reply so I'll try again. I'm running the newest X version from setup (4.2.0-43) updated today. I'm problems with using the scroll wheel as a middle mouse button in X. The scroll messages of the wheel mouse are transferred OK to X. E.g in mozilla running under X I can scroll the window with the scroll wheel. It's when I click the scroll that nothing happens in X. I'm using Win2K SP3, and the mouse is configured with the Logitech MouseWare Control Center (Control Center V9.60.146, Mouse Driver V9.60). I can assign different bindings to clicking the scroll wheel. I tried 'Unassigned', 'Middle Button' and 'Double Click' but nothing of that made a difference. I also ran X in fullscreen, as a window on the desktop or in -multiwindow but also this didn't make any difference. I'm a long time UNIX user and the lack of a middle mouse button is a big handicap (for example in mozilla I use to open a link in a new tab and the copy and paste mechanism of X depends on the middle mouse button). Any ideas to get this working (other then using 3 button mouse emulation by clicking left and right mouse button at the same time) ? greets, Staf.
Middle mouse button not working
Hello, I have a compaq PC with Win2000 on it with a scroll wheel mouse. When trying clicking the middle mouse button nothing happens. Scrolling with the wheel mouse does scroll the window in a mozilla window running on a remote linux machine. In the mouse configuration from the control panel I tried with different settigns for clicking the scroll wheel: double click, unassigned, middle button but non of them give any change on the behaviour of. I have the latest version of the X server available trough setup.exe (4.2.0-42) and use the following command to start the X server: X -query numerico -fp tcp/fontserv:7000 -fullscreen (Also started without the fullscreen option but this doesn't make any difference) greets, Staf.
Re: Connect from Unix to Windows via ssh and start an applycationwhich is using the windows display (more deatails)
Axel Bauer wrote: O.K. I think I should explain my problem more detailed. Because of company confidentials I only will describe the principal problem. We have a unix-host, running several services. On this host we want to call a script ( e.g. perl or bash-script) which starts an application on the windows machine. The windows application itself is served by a human operator on the windows host. In other words: The only task of the unix machine is to start the application, nothing more. Our intention is to use an ssh-connection to do that task. Therefore I installed cygwin togehter with sshd. From the Unix side it should be possible to make an ssh-call like ssh -x user@windowshost applicationcommand The only problem is the connection from the sshd-service (on windows) to the windows-display. I think that Vince Hoffman gave me a very good hint in his answer. (Allow sshd to connect the windows display). I try them out at the moment. I'm no windows expert but maybe you try to not run the sshd as a service but start it up during the user login on the windows machine. This way I think that the sshd will be connected to the local display. 8 bit fullscreen still problematic
Hello, I still have problems with 8 bit of XFree86. I'm using the latest version available with setup. Also checked to see if there are conflicting cygwin.dlls and this is not the case. I'm running on an NT4 machine. I try to start XWin in fullscreen mode with a depth of 8. (Xwin -fullscreen -depth 8). With engine 1 the XWin crashes. With engine 2 and 4 is starts up but I only get a black and white display when doing XDMCP to RH7.2 with gdm or to HPUX10.20 with CDE. (screen grabs are available and I will post them on request, around 40KB in total). The problem is that cadence Virtuoso needs an 8 bit display. I tried running 24bit XWin with -emulatepseudo option but then the program still complains that it can't handle 24 planes. greets, ++-+ |Staf Verhaegen ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) |ADRESS: IMEC vzw. - ASP/LITHO| |tel: 016/ 281 783 |Kapeldreef 75| |fax: 016/ 281 214 |3001 Leuven (Belgium)| ++-+ For every tool there are at least 2 uses: the one it was designed for and the other for which it wasn't.

For some reason, I just get bounced back to the login screen again. I've been unable to get this to work. Any ideas as to what could cause this? What is the machine you are connecting to ? Is it running a CDE environment ? I've seen this happen for CDE when not all the needed fonts are available for the CDE session. Contact your system adminstrator to see if they have a font server running in your company. Staf. Thanks for the reply. The machine I'm connecting to is running HP-UX and yes, CDE. wrt the font server. Is it a matter of me running a font server on my local machine or having a font server running on the machine I'm trying to connect to? If they're not running a font server and I'm able to get them to run one, does the configuration on my local box have to change? It is a matter to have the fonts available needed by the HP-UX CDE environment for your X server. This can be done by either copying the needed fonts from the HP machines to your local XFree86 installation (something I can't help with) or use one of the HP machines with the needed fonts as a font server. Anyway what happens when you select failsafe session during login ? Staf.
Re: Files transfer question
Stephen Liu wrote: Hi David, Thanks for your response. My requirement is only for files transfer betwenn WinXP and cygwin not via another software. Before I made use of Samba to do the job. Currently I make use of Internet to help me, dispatching the file as attachment to an email from WinXP to myself and download it on Linux and vice versa. The max size of file allowed is 10MB. It is quite sufficient for me. But I am looking for some other alternatives, if possible. What about ftp ? or sambaclient (an ftp like program for computers with a SMB shared drives) ? Staf.

That turncoat Miguel deIcaza is being quite the hypocrite by keeping the Exchange server access functionality closed source (and for a fee). You see I was in the community when the whole Rasterman/deIcaza merger happened and the e-desktop became gnome. I rember how he evangilized free software and the opensource movement, and scoffed at anyone who didn't release the source to the software they were working on. Personally, I will not use GNOME because of this [KDE is better anyhow], and if I could get away with it, I wouldn't use gtk either. As for evolution, it is too bulky, too buggy, and just plain ugly. Stick with Sylpheed or better yet, Pine! Cheers, Nicholas Nicholas, boy did I touch a nerve ;) As it happens I like both sylpheed and pine (especially the latter, if only that could become a GUI). However I have to say that Evolution is probably the strongest Linux x-mail client I've come across in all my years with Linux. It's a real shame that deIcaza should have sold out in this way as it would have been a real killer application in the workplace. Everything De Icaza and Ximian does is open source except one peace of code that is used to connect to an expensive propriety email server. Without this connector thing evolution email client is fully usable and open source as is ximian gnome, red carpet, mono, ... Staf. Rebooting does not help. What part of the installation process did I miss? Is C:\cygwin\bin in your Windows PATH ? If not he will not be able to find the DLL. Now it seems to do nothing at all. No sign of it on the screen, nor on the taskbar, nor in the tray. Is there a getting started doc somewhere? I wonder if there's something wrong with the way I went about getting it into the path (PATH=%PATH%;C:\CYGWIN\BIN prior to starting Windows). In NT, PATH and other environment settings can be adjusted in Control Panel/System; but 95 doesn't seem to work that way. On 95 you have to set the path in autoexec.bat. It works from here when I start XWin out of a DOS window so other people will need to help you. What is the output of the 'mount' command ? What if you type 'ls /usr/X11R6' Staf.

To use the fontserver you have to start XWin with the parameter -fp tcp/hostname:7100 maybe the unix notation will work too, but I have not verified it. I think documenting the -fp option in the command line parameters section of the User's guide can reduce the numbers of these posts. Staf.
