Once the libraries are released, other people can start compiling XFree86 packages for 1.5.x (or their own X apps). The actual apps can come along piecemeal after that, I think. I don't think X apps compiled with 1.5.1 against the old 1.3.x X libraries will work. But, I am not a Cygwin expert (IANACE), so hopefully others on this list will correct me if needed. I Am Not A Cygwin Expert? That's a new one of the OLOCA... Aaah yes. Would it be so awful to (a) allow both /usr/share/man and /usr/man, and/or gradually transition to a more compliant (e.g. /usr/share/man) hierarchy? I had the same thought. I don't have any problems with the gradual adoption of /usr/share/man, as long as the man command works with it, of course. I wish we'd used /usr/share/man from the start, in fact. Oh well. As they say at Red Hat We are still learning. This talk of adhering the FHS made me remember Chuck's proposal for an 'unsupported/' dir (http://www.cygwin.com/ml/cygwin-apps/2003-04/msg00306.html) in ~ftp/pub/cygwin . Chris raised some concerns about the cygwin mailing list filling up with lot's of musings about the 'unsupported' packages, but I think there's a way we can have an unsupported range of packages without the noise: integrate these 'unsupported' offerings with the Software list on the cygwin home page. I'm still working on understing how you are handling the 64 bit exports, but that's my problem. newlib provides _fdopen and _fdopen64. winsup/cygwin/Makefile.in adds an indirect reference to libcygwin.a that redirects fdopen to _fdopen64. Ditto for other 64 bit exports. Search for OBSOLETE_FUNCTIONS and NEW_FUNCTIONS in winsup/cygwin/Makefile.in. In the meantime, if we want to apply your newlib patch locally, how are you planning to export fdopen64() and fdopen64_r() from cygwin.din? Are the any further modifications needed to the winsup/cygwin source to support your implimentation? I have made the necessary changes in winsup/cygwin in my CVS copy after applying the newlib patch from Chris. I can post the patches to this list if that's an appropriate thing to do. Chris? On Thu, 17 Jul 2003, Charles Wilson wrote: Well, you can cross these off your list... bzip2 + libbz2_1 gdbm + libgdbm-devel, libgdbm3 Note that the following do not have any compiled portions, and are therefore ready for 1.5.0 autoconf automake libtool autoconf-devel automake-devel keychain BTW, I think you *should* include the lower namespaces. Even though some will NOT be ported to 1.5.0. For instance, libbz2_0 contains /usr/bin/cygbz21.0.dll. But, cygbz21.0.dll is provided only for backwards compatibility for any programs that might be around to use it. However, there is no import library for it. Therefore, any NEWly compiled apps that link against -lbz2 will use /usr/lib/libbz2.dll.a which points to cygbz2_1.dll. Thus, I updated cygbz2_1.dll (libbz2_1 package) but not cygbz21.0.dll (libbz2_0 package). So, there are really five classes of packages: 1) already recompiled for 1.5.0 2) non-binary 3) binary, but not for new use (e.g. could be recompiled, but why?) 4) empty compatibility packages (newlib-man, texmf?) 5) need to be recompiled 1.5.0 Of these 5 classes, only those packages in #5 need anything done. Everything else is fine. So, for instance, ncurses ncurses-demo libncurses7 libncurses-devel are all #1's. But libncurses6 libncurses5 are both #3's. And, base-files is #2, while cvs is #5. Here's my first cut at a list. I know I've probably miscategorized some things, but I tried to err on the side of putting stuff into #5 (recompile me now!) -- but we want #5 to get real small :-) Thanks for doing this Chuck! The POSIX regex functionality is a Cygwin builtin since roughly french revolution (well, 1.3.1 or so). I, for one, would remove the regex package entirely from the distro. There's no package in the distro using it and the period in which Cygwin had no POSIX regex and the regex package provided a shared lib was pretty small. I was thinking the same thing. Got the announce written up, went to verify the install procedure and ran into a problem. If I run setup, http://mirrors.rcn.net/ mirror, go to Net, and install naim, it downloads the .tar.bz2, makes like it's installing, then exits with a message: Nothing needed to be installed. None of the files in the package seem to appear in /usr/bin, /usr/doc/Cygwin, or elsewhere. If I cd / and manually tar -jxvf .../release/naim/naim-0.11.5.9.cyg11-1.tar.bz2 it does appear to install successfully, so I'm not sure what might be up. I have tried deltree'ing C:\cygwin\ and reinstalling from scratch, just in case I had broken something in my own install, but no dice. OK, I have an incling that this is because of the package file names. I've renamed the files, to see if setup will grok them. If I can I'll run upset, too. Hmmm... Setup guru's: would file names like naim-0.11.5.9.cyg11-1-src.tar.bz2 naim-0.11.5.9.cyg11-1.tar.bz2 these cause a problem like this? That didn't seem right, and testing confirmed - same failure mode when the version number is changed to 0.11.5-1 in file names and setup.ini. Nothing else looks odd with the package files, either. I'll see if I can add some extra logging to the relevant place in setup. Well that worked. naim-0.11.5.9{.,-}cyg11-1.tar.bz2 naim-0.11.5.9{.,-}cyg11-1-src.tar.bz2 mirrors.rcn.net updated at 21:52 (GMT) and it's looking fine.
