RE:[czernowitz-l] The Jewish Cemetery of Radautz (4,056 km)

2022-05-21 Thread Rennert Gad
Many thanks to all people who worked hard to document the Jewish community of
Radautz (including wonderful Dorin who unfortunately passed away unexpectedly
just a week before I was supposed to meet with him in Radautz). Most of my
family was actually born in Radautz (even if many moved afterwards to CZ) and
some are buried in the local cemetery (we re-built her tomb-stone which
collapsed). I am still intrigued about the pedigree Katz in Radautz which I
have not managed to decipher. There is a whole line of tombstones with the last
name Katz (including my great grand mother Pessi Rennert, ne: Katz) but I can’t
identify any siblings and generations of them.

Czernowitzers, dear friends,

Radautz, 14th stage of my „Journey Along the New Iron Curtain“. Radautz, of
course, was not the capital of Bukovina, and yet the stonemasonry in the Jewish
Cemetery of Radautz testifies to the significance that the Jewish community
once had here:

http://hauster.blogspot.com/2022/05/the-jewish-cemetery-of-radautz-4056-km.html

I dare to say that there is no other place in Bukovina than Radautz where the
Jewish Heritage is so well documented. In years of meticulous work, Yossi
Yagur, supported by his wife Miriam and Bondy Stenzler have managed to record
the gravestones on the basis of photographs, transcribe the inscriptions and
match them with the civil registers. The results of this literally monumental
task can be found here:

Project Description: http://hauster.de/data/TJCRver2021.pdf
JewishGen Database: https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/cemetery/
Cemetery Maps: http://hauster.de/data/LotByLot.pdf

It also took us years to present the results of the Seven Seals Project. What
is behind it? The late Dorin Fränkel and I digitized the civil registers of
Radautz for the period 1857-1929, my wife Martina did the transcription, while
Bruce Reisch, supported by his son Lucas, developed the search engines.

Czernowitzers, dear friends...

In December 2022, the University of Innsbruck in Austria invited to the
premiere of the documentary film "Forgotten Holocaust in Transnistria". Not
everyone, including me, could watch the 35-minute film without any problems. On
the occasion of today's International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the IKGS has
thankfully put the film online, in five different versions at once.

Hello there,
while looking deeper into the family of Pepi Rubinstein, the wife of Pinus
Rubinstein, I found out that her uncle was working as a „Postmeister“ in Vienna
and his last name was Rennert, I am curious if there is any connection to the
family of Erwin Rennert. Pepi’s maiden name was Schächter. Plus: On the birth
certificate of Pepi‘s and Pinus‘ son the name Pere Faige Rennert shows up.
I ordered both the book „Die Jüdische Bukovina“ and the DVD „Eine verschwundene
Welt“ from Bukovina Books in Tel Aviv.
I know that Emil and other members of the Rennert family are here on this list,
so if you read this could you please respond?

[czernowitz-l] [Cz-L] Nandor Gingold

2021-01-16 Thread Rennert Gad
Hi list members,

I am trying to find information about a remote family member who is remembered
by the family as Lupo Gingold. I know that he was somehow involved in Romanian
politics around WWII.
Google search was not very helpful but I got to the name Nandor Gingold
(1905-1986) who was the head of the Central Jewish Office at the time of
Antonescu and maybe in the Romanian Senate and later was jailed for many years.
I cannot find information about this Jewish leaders' point of birth and
parents' name and therefore cannot tie together the information I have.
"my" Lupo is the son of Schulem Gingold from Bukovina (1880-1942), brother of
Frida, father of Tulio and Surika and Anuza, the first two perished in the war.
Schulem ended up being murdered in Odessa.

Any insight?

Thanks

Gadi

I found out a little more:

Paula lived w her husband in Vienna and in 1937 -1938 she was still alive!

Paula was Moses' second eldest daughter.

The oldest was Bertha, then Paula, then Mathilda and my great grandmother

Hope this helps a little bit

Dear Czernowitzers and Bukoviners,

Our list numbers well over 500 subscribers these days and we have a steady rate
of about 1-3 new members joining per week. Your list owners (myself, Jerome
Schatten, and Edgar Hauster) are making some significant changes behind the
scenes, and we'd like to let you know what's happening and why.

1. The Subject line will now be automatically prepended with "[czernowitz-l]".
Previously, we'd been inserting "[Cz-L]" manually. If you're sorting your mail
with the "[Cz-L]" prepended on the subject line, you will have to change that.

2. We are making some changes behind the scenes to allow your formatted / html

should be quite soon. Hopefully, this eliminates extra work on our end, and
gives you the freedom to express yourselves in your posts!

2021-01-26 Thread Rennert Gad
With the new law, now in effect in Austria regarding Jews after WWII, I applied
through the Austrian embassy in Israel and received a response that they do not
think I am eligible. This is not clear to me as my father was born in
Austro-Hungary in 1918 before they became “Romania” and his and my mother’s
birth registration is in written in German (the spoken language at home which
now I understand is more Austrian German than German German). Needless to
mention that both of my parents ended spending long periods in camps in
Transnistria.

And BTW, they did not have a problem with me having former nationalities

Hi Alan
A conundrum.
You are encouraging me to investigate the route of Austrian citizenship. The
Romanian route is stagnating. Various excuses…
I never thought that joining the Czernowitz group would lead to such
interesting conversations… 😊

Thank you Karin & Arthur for raising the Austrian Citizenship question

Firstly, Karin it seems that you must have a chance to apply again to Austria
having already once held citizenship. I think there is a significant element
of restitution and nations trying to confront errors of the past in some of
these recent changes to citizenship rules - also see Portugal and, to a lesser
extent, Spain.

The issue of dual nationality is clearly important, especially to those of us
in the UK who are looking to re-create our links to Europe after the terrible
disaster of Brexit. I believe Romania does, Poland is not keen but may do so
and Germany has now changed its rules to not allow it with non EU countries
(like the UK post 2020) although if you are applying for German citizenship
because it was lost as a result of Nazi oppression then you CAN apparently hold
dual citizenship.

I have struggled with understanding the Austrian offer. I will try and look
into it in more detail but it could be interesting. Does it matter that, after
leaving Kolomya & Vijnita, my grandparents went to Germany and never lived in
what is modern-day Austria?

My grandparents on my mother's side came from Kolomyja and Vijnita (Wiznitz) -
the two towns are 50km apart but when they were born in 1908/1911 one was in
the Austro-Hungarian province of Galicia and one was in th
