Re: [darktable-devel] Feature Request

2013-04-23 Thread Artur de Sousa Rocha
Hi Alex,

Please see the FAQs 2, 3, and 4 here: http://www.darktable.org/faq/

Even as a user I have to agree with the developers' priorities. I can
live with having to put a bit more forethought about where I put my
files (which is a good habit in general).

2013-04-23 Thread David Vincent-Jones
I complained for the longest time over the file management system but
have to say that now that I understand the system better the current
offering is totally without equal. A superb job.

The directory structure is there if one needs it and so is every other
imaginable structure. Certainly it has changed the way that I bring
images to the screen and made me more cognoscente of cataloguing
procedures but it is slick and very efficient.

If there is are problems with the system it may lie in the lack of
comprehensive documentation and users discomfort in changing old work
habits. I have very cheerfully moved away from using the DEM of Digikam
with its typical directory structure approach.

Which image management system does LIghtroom provide? Because they use the
same concept than us: a db containig all images. If your mean that they
show a list of folders, we do also: just select "folders" on the combobox
in collect images. But what they don't do (and we won't) is to allow yo to
browse across your HD and see images that have not been previously imported.

2013-04-23 Thread Binoyte
DT more needs a better db management than a file management :
 - DT needs a better UI for tagging / managing keyword
 - DT needs a way to fill IPTC location fields (Country, City etc...)
 - DT needs a better db explorer (as already proposed on DT's wiki :
http://darktable.org/redmine/projects/darktable/wiki/MetadataBrowserGui)

I understand developers "have image editing code to write" but since DT can
manage masks, the 3 points above are the last big ones why I still use
AfterShot Pro. The darkroom of DT is enough for my needs.

Yes, the two first points really need a look, as well as the third one. I
am splitting those because the first two ones are clearly needed, while the
third one will need more discussion the be seamlessly integrated with the
collect images module.

What is what you really miss from the tagging module?

[darktable-devel] Fwd: Darktable Noise Presets

2013-04-23 Thread Steve Boyer
Hello Everyone!

I was wanting to create/test/submit a noise profile for my camera - the
Canon Rebel T3 (EOS 1100D). I read through the "howto" and couldn't find
the scripts - then read through the comments and learned I needed the GIT
version of DT. I asked in the IRC channel and was told to just e-mail 'em.
I'm sending at least 1 of each ISO that my camera does, with a few extras.
Hopefully, these have a large enough histogram in order to create
an adequate profile. Because the total size of the files is 142MB, I am
just sending a link to the files that are hosted in my dropbox.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/eedffggdi2pgdnk/UZVQH5jGNB

Thank you all very much for the work that goes into this program!

Please let me know if I can help out further!

Sincerely,
Steven Boyer

Crowdsource it. Invite users to suggest improvements. Collect them into
an architecture. Share with developers. Share back with users who
contributed for validation. Implement in stages.

Suggestions are always welcome. You are free to come to irc and discuss
any concepts you have, which would have the advantage that you would
know which features are planned. This would reduce the "adhoc" evolvement.

No, there is no dedicated team, but the core developers have a relatively
clear idea about what the user interface should look and feel like. Any
concrete problems or ideas can be shared either in IRC or here. Make sure to
read the relevant wiki pages first though, maybe the issues are already
identified and nobody felt the need to fix them yet.
