Although I must admit that there's another commonly used word for it.

the existance of the "pre" library as the library format changed and
cannot be reverted so you have a "backup" copy which you can use to revert
to pre-3.0 dt. It is not an indication of the problem you relate.

and as I indicated, I am on "post" 3.0, master git.

I have found library.db and library.db-pre-3.0.0 in the same directory,
which was not created by myself for sure, so I think my guessing was
not so wrong.

Let's see, if the error appears again, at the moment I have no picture
to delete to test it.

you also fail to give information about your system and version of dt
which btw is lower case.

on my openSUSE Tumbleweed system, the library.db is at
~/.config/darktable/library.db.

you may run dt without using the library:
  darktable --library :memory:
using a different library:
  darktable --library

or just move or delete the present library.db and it will be replaced with
a new empty library.

the darktable manual is really full of pertinent information.

I never noticed with DT 2.6

How can I create a new (empty) database? Actually I don't use the
database to rate photos.

Thank you!!

Darktable is a mighty tool, looks like, I need to further learn more and
more ;-) !

Guess, I'm set.

different types of processing).

Dear Bernhard + Vietor:

that was it, thank you!

I am not familiar with the concept of "variables", unfortunately; then I

was unsure if storing in the origin folder is supported.

In my workflow, I like having modified pics in the same directory to

keep it at the same place (pic-sequence) as originals.

So, for now, I can use the feature as desired- thank you!

On page 44 (chapter 2.3.13) of the English manual there is a list of available
variables. Here you can download the manual in English, French, German and
