Let me add my thanks to this, too. Even though, with the assistance of
contributors on pixls.us, I have been able to compile dt 4.2.1 from
source, I still value the quick access to dt binaries available via the
OBS. It's a huge amount of work where accuracy and attention to detail
are absolutely demanded; I respect and admire those unknown souls who do
this work for people like me.

Last time I checked, there was no package for Ubuntu. So I made up my 
mind and compiled from sources.

That was about six months ago.
I must add that compiling dt is not that difficult, most of the work is 
automated. There are issues when one tries to do things not fully 
following the instructions.

to add, it is also necessary to satisfy the desire you have expressed
unless you can convince someone to volunteer their time and efforts to
provide something you do not want to do yourself.  you have the answer to
your desires and it requires your efforts.

when I get err's compiling, I can go to pixls.us or here to request help
and usually that help is very quickly provided.  I am definitely no
compiler wizard, do not understand most errors and at > 80 years maybe a
little slow.

No need to be overly dramatic, if you can't get your head around the 
compilation process, there will be ready-made packages available.

Just not necessarily the day (or week) a new version is announced, the 
packagers are volunteers with other demands on their time.

But if you do not want to wait, you'll have to *learn* how to compile from 
source. Yes, that process takes time, the first time around. No, there are no 
shortcuts, complaining it's too complicated doesn't help (if anything, it will 
get you *less* help).

Incredily, this worked, after failing a few times at the git clone step 
(for reasons beyond my understanding), and after GitHub denying my 
authentication attempts in the absence of some sort of 
not-so-fine-toothed-token (meaning unknown to me as the words used in 
that combination make absolutely no sense to me, even though I know what 
each of them means when used individually, for example like the sequence 
'elephant reflux differentiation asymptote').


The whole process is most unsatisfactory. It can best be described 
through an analogy: it was what I expect would be the experience of a 
blind person driving a busload of passengers along the narrow track a 
couple of hundred metres up in the gorge of the Jinshan River near Hu 
tiao xia in Yunnan Province - with verbal instructions (in local Yunnan 
dialect) being given by a highly experienced master co-driver who was 
having his lunch at the same time. 'Ah, yes, I should have warned you 
about that fragile part of the track before you drove into it - it's 
just that I don't have to think about it now after so many trips. Not to 
worry; only 95% fatalities. We have enough salvageable bits to rebuild 
the bus'.

Thank you for spending time to help me - that is much appreciated.

I had been much disheartened by the Pixls.Us article, from January 2020, 
titled 'Building darktable-master from github 
' 
, where somebody with a knowledge and understanding level far greater 
than mine was struggling, and ultimately failing, to complete the 
compilation process. The help advice given there included performing the 
compilation using a privately developed process under a different linux 
distribution, with no real information of how to install the built 
version of dt. That is completely orthogonal to my skill set.


But I'll give your instructions a try.

- JPEG files are identified using magic bytes instead of file
extension. This helps in cases where JPEG images end up in
files with unexpected extensions.

- Allow shortcuts to be assigned to the "quick access" style and preset
menus at the bottom of the darkroom view

- Add a collapsible section to the sigmoid module so that
controls not used in standard processing scenarios are hidden
by default.

- Some minor modifications to image overlays in culling view to make
them less intrusive.
