You can update the path at any level, and the child folders will inherit
the change. For example, if you have 30 folders inside a common "Year2015"
folder, you only have to update the path for "Year2015", all the subfolders
will update accordingly. Even easier if all the yearly folders share a
common ancestor...

2022-11-28 Thread Bengt Falke
Hmmm... It seems this utility (mentioned below) only fixes the path one
folder at the time?

That will be an impossible task for 10 years and 30 folders in each year

Or am I missing something?

How should I go about moving all to a new computer and a new OS?

Are there instructions somewhere?

specific, I am not aware, but ...

install dt on the new computer
copy the images and accompanying xmp files to new computer
copy the macbook equivalent "/home/user/.config/darktable" to the new

import the relocated image files on the new computer

and except for dt needing to recreate the cache files, you should be

to go are retain all edits and configurations.

You can open an xmp file in a text editor and check for yourself which tags
are present. Look for the XML tags (keyword
hierarchy) and ("flat" keywords).
Darktable can read its own XMP files, so tags that are in them will be read in
the new version/installation.

xmp are a per-image-copy of the database.
So they serve as a simple backup and also make portability possible => import
photos on another PC.

Not included in the xmps are information that is related to more than one image
- e. g. if you group images in lighttable.
