Is the PCA for the 2001 Census available in a similar format?

 Thanks much

Hi sumit,

The difference in the data that I have shared now is that THIS DATA
for 1991 is at Village / Town level.

Hi sumit,

I did download the data and have it with me.

I rechecked your link again

It is the same file I have.

But in the data you shared the 1991 data is not at Village / Town
level.

The data I have shared now is at the village/town level.

Re: [datameet] story plug - How many athletics medals will India win at the Asian Games?

2018-08-30 Thread Shijith Kunhitty
Ha ha, no I definitely got my forecast of athletics medals wrong! But have
a feeling all these athletics medals have come about less because of Indian
athletes overperforming and more because of other Asian athletes
underperforming (Neeraj Chopra being an exception). Will see if I can do a
follow-story in the Hindustan Times on this. And thanks for all the
feedback! :) -shijith

Hi everyone, just sending a link to a data story I did on the Asian
 Games.

The athletics events at this year's Asian Games are starting this
Saturday. In the story I try to guess how many athletics medals India
 could
win at the Asian Games using past data. Chances are we could win fewer
 than
 we did in 2014.

Here's the link to the story:
 https://shijithpk.github.io/asian_games_athletics/index.html .

Parts of the story were earlier published in the Hindustan Times, just
putting it all in one place so it's easier to read.

Used data from IAAF.org for the story as well as IAAF's scoring tables
 .

The python code used to scrape and analyse the data is available in the
 github repo here: https://github.com/shijithpk/asian_games_athletics .

If anyone has any questions or feedback, do let me know! -thanks,

Re: [datameet] story plug - How many athletics medals will India win at the Asian Games?

2018-08-30 Thread Nikhil VJ
Hi Shijith,

Good analysis of the historical trend. It gives a valuable benchmark of
what the status quo is and where the country as a collective needs to
compete with its former self.

After the games conclude it would be great to update the dataset and run
the same analysis again and see where the biggest changes in trend have
happened, plus a scorecard of how India fared this year as measured against
herself.

Later it would also be good to trace back to the causes behind sudden trend
changes : have there been any significant changes in the coaching style?
Recruiting mechanism? Renumerations? Management changes? This goes for both
positive as well as negative differences.

Quick google search on current medals tally says:
13 Gold
21 Silver
25 Bronze
One suggestion in terms of choice of words: instead of calling it as
prediction for coming year, call it as current benchmark/trend. They are
technically the same things, but impression in readers mind is different.
One leaves the agency for change in the stakeholder's hand whereas the
other makes it sound more like fate. Data is valuable both in predicting
the future and in changing it. Also, one of the approaches won't attract
rude comments in the comments stream (supposing this was being published by
a news platform where readers can post comments) later on, in the off
chance that the forecast got beat :D
