Re: Boot-Floppies Sarge

2002-09-24 Thread Adrian von Bidder

On Mon, 2002-09-23 at 18:30, Claudio wrote:
Could i know how to boot Sarge installation with the floppies?
I dowloaded the 9 CD but none is bootable; then i try to do the boot from
 floppy: RESCUE.
But when i continue it says that it can't find linux.bin.
 I don't know where i wrong.
 Please, help me.

Could you please, please, please take the advice given to you on several
occasions, and install woody and *then* upgrade to sarge? It will work,
really. Is it that difficult? If you absolutely don't want to do this,
go hack the new debian-installer - they do need helping hands.

Attached are the previous msgs I could find, search in the archives,
you'll find most of them got answers.

*sigh*

Excuse me, for my total ignorance, but i really don't know how to do
resolve this problem:
i download the Sarge, all 9 cd, but i can't install it.
I don't understand if this distribution is bootable, in first. Then, when i
try to install it using dselect of the Potato, i recive an error (100,
internal error).
Please could you give an answer?
Could i use the boot from the diskettes?

Bug#162143: install-doc: Add sparc floppy boot error message

2002-09-24 Thread Pieter-Paul Spiertz

Package: install-doc
Version: 3.0.23 (not installed)
Severity: minor
Tags: patch

My Sun Ultra 5 does not boot the Debian Woody sparc floppy images.
After an hour, I finally found an answer - NetBSD 1.6, SuSE 7.1 had the
same problems, nowhere a solution and I didn't understand why, until I
skimmed the debian-sparc mailinglist archives and understood that it was
a hardware problem.
I really think this is something for a FAQ.

My problem was that Google did not find the exact error message with the
fix.

So, here you go:

Re: shell in debian-installer

2002-09-24 Thread Bernhard R. Link

 | When I try to start 3. Execute a shell and pressing enter to get
 | behind the cdebconf-notice I get a
 | postinst exited with status 65280.

Did you build everything out of CVS or where did you
 get the packages from?

I build was is under debian-installer and got the others(kernel,ash,...) with
apt with the included sources.list.

The state of the unstable chroot I'm working in and the cvs used should
be that of the mid of last week.

Sounds strange. if you switch to vt2 and try the shell there, does it
 work properly?

There I get a shell. While on vt1 I still get the 65536-256 exit status.

Now I'm completely confused.

But starting di-utils-shell.postinst works on vt2, too.
(Not that easy, this damn default keyboard-emulation of bochs seems to
have no key for '/' )

Running debconf di-utils-shell.postinst also works, but after
exiting the started shell it clears but the original shell is not
there. (I guess the redirection magic in di-... causes this)

Yes, if you skipped network configuration then it is still unconfigured.

It's not very logical. You need a /etc/hosts even if you don't have
 networking.

Hrm, even if I told Yann to tell more, I am confused a bit. etc/hosts
should be allways written (forced call in write_common_network()) unless
you have choosen DHCP, DHCP was set up (use_dhcp=1) but the interface
were down while writting the files.

/etc/hostname may not be written if you did not run Configure the
network nor the Configure hostname steps successfully.

IIRC, you'd need to rerun configure the network if dhcp bombs (which
isn't intuitive, since at that point you should know that you can't
configure the network :)

I did run the configure hostname step, at least.

I don't have much time tonight, will try to test things tomorrow.

2002-09-24 Thread MR REUBEN SAVIMBI

My Dear

I am MR REUBEN SAVIMBI one of the favorite sons of Mr. JONAS SAVIMBI (The
Rebel leader) and also the head of the
Unita Forces of Angola who was killed in the Struggle between Angolan arm
forces and his Unita rebels On Friday the
22nd of February 2002.
I am from Angola but currently I am residing in the Republic of Benin In
(Cotonou) due to the War in my country between
the Rebel Group (Unita rebels) Led by my father Jonas Savimbi and the
Angolan Government.

I want a honest, trust worthy, and God fearing individual to go into
business Partnership with and that is the reason why I
have decided to contact you. The fund for investment is US$45.5M (Forty
Five Million Five Hundred Thousand United
States Dollars) and Diamond worth over Twelve Million Dollars. This fund
was realized from the sales of Diamonds during
the crisis between the Unita Rebels (headed by my father Jonas Savimbi)
and the then President Jose Eduardo dos Santos
Of Angola.

I fled from my country with this fund, which my fathers suppose to have
used to procure more arms for the Unita Rebels.
This is because I felt that the battle waged by the Unita Forces was more
of rebellion and it was baseless. I had this fund
sealed in a diplomatic box and deposited in a private Security Company
here in Republic of Benin (Cotonou). I will need
assistance from you to use your facilities to effect the removal of this
fund and subsequently transferred to your nominated
Bank account in your country. This business has to be done in a more
confidential manner.

For participating in the business with me, I have two options for you. You
can choose to have certain percentage of the
funds or you can go into partnership with me for proper profitable
investment of the money in your country.

Whichever the option you want, feel free to notify me. The money is
presently lodged with a security firm and I will give you
further details immediately I hear from you. Please contact me immediately
for the next line of action then I will introduce you
to the security company where the funds are been deposited.

I would like you to include your personal phone and fax numbers for more
confidential Communication with the Security
Company. I will like you to understand that I have no access to telephone
so you are advice to contact me through my
email address.

You may be surprised to receive this kind of offer from me since you do
not know me personally, though this might come to
you as a surprise since we have not met or spoken with each other before.
I plead for your understanding and tender my
humble apologies if I had taken you unaware.
You are free to investigate about my family background, especially my
father wealth, but Treat this matter with utmost
confidentiality and if for personal reasons this proposal does not meet
your approval, please keep my confident and
disregard this mail. I look forward to your quick response.

Regards
REUBEN J.SAVIMBI.

second-stage i18n for b-f.

really. Is it that difficult? If you absolutely don't want to do this,
go hack the new debian-installer - they do need helping hands.

How do you know? I do not see anybody saying hey, we have a
good and reliable, working d-i build system and need people to design
 and code.

Something tells me it might be time to hack up a bit more
and see if boot-floppies can do second-stage install in
localized languages.

debconf does iconv now. That probably means that
second-stage installer can also run inside bogl.

junichi

All the steps are right on your CD, in the /install/doc folder, or
on the web at

I do admittedly not know if the d-i people actively search help. From
what I heard, I do know, however, that d-i is still not finished, and
from what I've seen so far, helping hands are rarely turned away if
offered. Of course, if d-i is a closed project, I've misunderstood
something and will have to search for another distribution (pity - I was
liking Debian quite a bit.)
