Bug#341380: lilo-installer cannot handle image in /boot
Hi all, will this issue be fixed in an installer update for sarge ? At the moment I'm generating two links from my preseed file with the following kludge to get lilo-installer running: d-i preseed/early_command string echo ln -s boot/initrd.img /target/initrd.img; ln -s boot/vmlinuz /target/vmlinuz /usr/lib/base-installer.d/40netcfg Thanks, Hermann -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: Bug#295476: add support for disabling auto-eject
Hi, I've just installed Debian Sarge (Using the network-install-CD 3.1_r1a) to a new Server which was nearly damaged due to the cd-eject feature without prior warning at the end of the installation procedure. After looking around for some time I found that there has been a discussion already about this subject. I am now trying to convince you to remove this annoying behaviour from the installation procedure. I have understood the reasons for including this feature and I'm sure that there's an alternative to what's happening right now that will satisfy both sides. A solution could look like this: Message: The system will be rebooted. Do you want to eject the CD to make sure you're not booting the installation system but you newly installed debian system? no = reboot without ejecting the CD yes = next message: Please remove the CD and hit Enter to reboot. I know this is one more question during the install process, but there are good reasons why this question should be added: 1. The user should keep control over his hardware, ejecting a CD without prior warning has been annoying to many user I know (Nero does this, too) 2. There's always the risk that by ejecting the CD, the users hardware is damaged or even worse. Do you sit in front of your computer during the whole installation procedure? I usually do different things at the same time and walk around the room and a suddenly ejecting CD could even cause an accident this way. This nearly happened to me when I first used Nero to burn a CD and was not aware of what was going to happen. 3. Everyone installing a debian system should know what he is doing and should be aware of the fact that the computer would start from the cd again if he didn't remove it. I don't think Debian should be adapted to people who cannot handle a computer. If you're not going to remove this annoying feature, please include at least a warning for the user and instructions on how to disable the automatic cd-eject. See also: http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2005/02/msg00540.html I don't know if this patch has been applied already and I don't know where to look for this but as far as I know it hasn't The Sarge version of the installer does not have this option: http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2005/09/msg00107.html Thanks for your attention, Christoph Kobe -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bashing on your porter is fine, but then don't expect them to fix stuff at your whim, and do the job yourself. I hereby officially announce that i won't continue to do the ungratefull job of powerpc d-i porting, i hear the d-i team has plenty of folk to take my place, so they should fix this. I've set up http://people.debian.org/~cjwatson/d-i/images/; the images there are untested, and I haven't yet cronned the build (I probably need to get my Pegasos going again and move it there, rather than trying to do it on my laptop), but I'll try to get that sorted out sometime this week. Bug#355851: a blindunfriendly debian installer problem
Dave Mielke, le Tue 28 Mar 2006 06:59:56 -0500, a écrit : [quoted lines by Samuel Thibault on 2006/03/28 at 11:41 +0200] However, although it works well when hotplugging the device after bootup, it does not when booting with the device already plugged, because USB seems to be discovered before vcsa nodes are available, hence brltty fails. brltty makes any vcsa devices which it needs but aren't there yet. Yes I know, but for some reason it fails here... Maybe udev, while still booting, prevents brltty from being able to create anything in /dev? Regards, Samuel

For accusing me in two different emails that it is my fault the daily build is broken, while he knows perfectly i am currently half a world away. Furthermore, i have a script which daily scans the build-dep of the svn checkout of the d-i tree, and installs the build-dependencies, so it should not cause problems. Also as said, it is a bit difficult to swallow that i am told debian is better off without me, and then being held responsible for the d-i daily builds, don't you think ? Really, i just wanted to be helpful to hsaymal, and orient him to the right place, i may not have checked everything in detail, as i am not really in conditions to do so, but that is no excuse for bashing me in 2 different emails, and is furthermore a behavior very similar to the one i was almost expulsed for, so two weights two measures ? Bug#355851: a blindunfriendly debian installer problem
[quoted lines by Samuel Thibault on 2006/03/28 at 15:57 +0200] Hi: for some reason it fails here... Maybe udev, while still booting, prevents brltty from being able to create anything in /dev? In my opinion, it's more important to give the blind person his screen as quickly as possible rather than to wait, which would still leave him wondering what went wrong. A better solution, therefore, might be for brltty to make the device file somewhere else, e.g. in /etc/brltty, if it can't create it in the usual place. It could even remove the file immediately after opening it, in this case, if we deem it important to not leave device files lying around in strange places. -- Dave Mielke | 2213 Fox Crescent | I believe that the Bible is the Phone: 1-613-726-0014 | Ottawa, Ontario | Word of God. But the installer won't use the values in the preseed file. I've tried with and without passing the kernel parameter: preseed/file=/preseed.cfg But in either case, the preseed values are not used. Am I missing something obvious? Does the netboot initrd not support preseed files inside the initrd? Do I need to build my own customized netboot images? If there is documentation on this, please point me in the right direction. And if I didn't explain the problem clearly enough, please let me know and I'll try and clarify. Thanks for your time! -- Steve Feehan -- Steve Feehan Yesterday afternoon I decided to proceed down the path of building a custom debian installer netboot image with the file-preseed and/or initrd-preseed udebs. The first problem I encountered is that the initrd-preseed udeb seems to not exist for the version of preseed used in stable. The other preseed udebs for stable are version 1.01 but initrd-preseed only exists as version 1.14.1. So my questions... 1. Am I proceeding in the right direction? Ie. is creating a custom debian-installer netboot image the correct solution to storing a preseed.cfg inside the initrd? 2. Do I need to use/build the debian-installer version from sid since there does not appear to be an initrd-preseed for stable? 3. Is it possible to use the sid installer to install a stable system? Unmount and compress initrd image. And now my final (hopefully minor) problem: a couple of the preseed lines don't seem to be used. For instance, I don't want sshd to start so I add: ssh ssh/run_sshd string false at the end of /preseed.cfg, but it doesn't seem to be honored. Are preseeds that are not strictly part of the installer not used? And there are two prompts I can't seem to get rid of, I think the debconf keys for one is keymap/policy. The other is just a note before the keymap/policy question. Thanks. -- Steve Feehan -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: d-i on serial console with name != ttyS/tts
On Sunday 26 March 2006 8:30 pm, Martin Michlmayr wrote: * Rob Landley [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2006-03-26 17:40]: I saw the following problem today: I started debian-installer on a machine with serial console, the device node /dev/tts/0 got created Still using devfs names, I see. Yes, and that won't change soon. We're using udev on 2.6 though and have a devfs compatability schema. The problem I saw was on 2.6. There's a use devfs names option somewhere. (Support for devfs in the first menu turns on CONFIG_FEATURE_DEVFS, that's probably it.) Among other things, that makes init look for devfs names for console and such by default. (That's a legacy support feature that will eventually go away, probably in 1.2.0, but you've got at least a year, maybe as much as three. We'll move it to a deprecated menu for a release before actually removing it...) I'm confused: what exactly are you trying to do? (You're using init without an inittab, or...?) inittab contains: ::sysinit:/sbin/debian-installer-startup ::respawn:/sbin/debian-installer vc/2::askfirst:/bin/sh vc/3::respawn:/usr/bin/tail -f /var/log/messages vc/4::respawn:/usr/bin/tail -f /var/log/syslog ::ctrlaltdel:/sbin/shutdown /dev/null 21 ::restart:/sbin/init Ok. The general debain installer people might like svn 14606, which makes it so busybox 1.1.1 doesn't need to have the tty nodes created at the time the inittab is read, but instead checks when it tries to spawn the process on that tty... http://busybox.net/downloads/patches/svn-14606.patch Oh, great. I'll give that a try. This might solve the original problem I reported a few weeks ago. In theory it's in 1.1.1. I'll get back to you but it will take a while - I'm leaving for holidays soon (actually, should go to bed since I've to get up in 2.5 hours again) and then moving to another country... Is it possible to use the sid installer to install a stable system? Yes, that has been made possible again _after_ the Beta2 release, so you'd need the daily images. It's only been tested for an i386 install. Also, the installation will not be 100% identical to an install using the Sarge installer. Note also that it is not fully supported and you may run into problems, especially on the reboot. Reason for this is that the installer will run with a newer kernel (2.6.16) than is installed on the target system (2.6.8). See also the README in the d-i SVN repository for package sarge-support. Re: Bug#359062: debian-installer: bterm is not (yet) accessible for brltty
Hi: I, personally, don't want to see any solution which is Debian-specific, or any other distribution-specific either. The Debian installer uses betrm. So does RedHat when Asian characters are used. So/ probably/ do other distributions. Regardless of what any individual installer does, bterm can also be used at any other time. Any solution which solves the problem for only one particular instance of a general case is, in my opinion, an extremely poor alternative for solving the problem as a whole in one place for all cases. This can easily be done by changing bterm to passively export its view of the screen in a software-readable way. -- Dave Mielke | 2213 Fox Crescent | I believe that the Bible is the Phone: 1-613-726-0014 | Ottawa, Ontario | Word of God. Wanted: Debian Installer PowerPC porter(s)
Hi all, Sven Luther has recently announced [1] that he will no longer work on PowerPC support in Debian Installer. Colin Watson has already taken over the daily building of d-i images for PowerPC, so working daily builds are available again. Colin is willing to do that long term, but if a new porter should like to take care of that, I'm sure this can be discussed. So what does being a d-i porter involve? Mainly it means taking responsibility for architecture specific issues. Ideally this means: - regular testing of the installer, preferably on different subarches - keeping an eye out for installation reports for powerpc and following up on them (especially if architecture specific issues are reported) - taking care of architecture specific components of the installer, such as kernel udebs, bootloader installers, some partman components - reproducing, tracing and (hopefully) resolving bugs - taking care of daily builds of d-i images Familiarity with used filesystems and booting systems is a definite advantage, but in general work on the installer itself is fairly easy as most of it is scripted, with only some parts written in C. Involvement on any level is welcome. Also, as PowerPC has several fairly distinct subarchitectures, getting involved for a specific subarch is an option. The Debian Installer team is generally seen as open, friendly and helpful. And it has to be as the core team is fairly small but depends on a lot of effort from other developers, porters and translators to keep the installer in working order for all the (sub)architectures it supports. General help on the structure and inner workings of the installer and its components is always available. The last release of the installer (Etch Beta 2) had several PowerPC specific issues [2]. We'd very much like to see these resolved. There are also some open issues for the new graphical version of the installer. If you are interested, please contact us on the debian-boot list. Bug#355851: a blindunfriendly debian installer problem
Hi, Ok, now that this whole discussion took place, here is something that (almost) works: http://brl.thefreecat.org/mini.iso (9ed7c3a112a6d72834f6ffeef19d615a) I attached the patch that I applied to brltty and bogl for getting that result (they shouldn't be considered as final of course). You can test: qemu -cdrom mini.iso = no brltty at all qemu -cdrom mini.iso -serial stdio and type install brltty=tt,ttyS0 at the kernel command line. = brltty is started from /etc/rcS.d with the given parameter: using a TTY driver on the serial port, hence qemu's stdin/out. qemu -cdrom mini.iso -serial stdio -usb -usbdevice mouse = brltty is automatically started by udev thanks to the dumb last rule of brltty.rules (just for testing). qemu -cdrom mini.iso -serial stdio -usb = no brltty, but when typing usb_add mouse in the qemu console (hence simulating a braille device hot plug-in), brltty gets started. Note for non- brltty-used people: press arrows (for instance) for getting rid of the BRLTTY 3.7.2 and x startup problem(s) messages. Then you'll see brltty's reading in action! :) I said almost works because it seems like udevd calls the add hook for the same USB device several times more during the installation (when probing devices), hence starting brltty a few additional times... I don't know udev stuff enough for fixing it the proper way. (Note that running several instances of brltty for different braille devices is fine: each of them drives one device ; but two brlttys for the same braille device may lead to garbage). Colin is willing to do that long term, but if a new porter should like to take care of that, I'm sure this can be discussed. So what does being a d-i porter involve? Mainly it means taking responsibility for architecture specific issues. Ideally this means: - regular testing of the installer, preferably on different subarches - keeping an eye out for installation reports for powerpc and following up on them (especially if architecture specific issues are reported) - taking care of architecture specific components of the installer, such as kernel udebs, bootloader installers, some partman components - reproducing, tracing and (hopefully) resolving bugs - taking care of daily builds of d-i images Current open issues that i am aware of are : - partman-prep is broken on IBM/CHRP and PREP and doesn't mark the partition as prep and doesn't pass the partition number to prep-installer or yaboot-installer, making debian uninstallable without major hurdle on prep and IBM RS6k and pseries machines. - d-i kernel .udebs need to add support for apus kernels. This was not possible pre-beta2, due to changes being needed in kernel-wedge, and these changes being too hazardous to do shortly before the etch beta2. - nubus support. There is a working 2.4.27 nubus kernel, which needs to get d-i support in order to be usefull for installing on nubus machines. Ideally, the nubus patches should be ported to 2.6.x, but that is another category of work required. - each kernel abi change needs a reupload of the powerpc d-i kernels, and a rechecking of all the modules for a new version. This is a tedious process. - debian-installer CDs don't boot on ibm rs6k 32bit machines. yaboot-installer has a problem on those, and the mkvmlinuz generated kernels with builtin initrd can also not boot (probably due to too huge ramdisk thansk to initramfs-tools). - various old-world issues, including the work to free miboot, and inclusion of the free miboot version into the official archive. Mmm, i hope Colin Watson doesn't forget to add miboot support to his daily builds, or oldworld support will have been definitively killed. - the graphical installer doesn't work anymore on powerpc, the graphical frontend crashes, some heavy debugging is needed here. Well, that is what i see right now, some of these issues are open since a couple of weeks now, if not more, and i saw nobody jump in to fix then, even after i was scheduled for expulsion, so i hope that frans calls will give more results, altough seeing as it is a tedious process with little respect from the d-i team ... Disable CONFIG_ACORN_PARTITION_CUMANA in Debian kernels?
[ Please follow-up to debian-kernel. ] Hi, We have received a number of bug reports (353400, 358913, 359207) against kernel packages about the check for the Cumana partition table, commonly found on Acorn machines. Being too lax, this check occasionally produces false positives for VFAT partition tables, preventing the proper mounting of USB sticks. The easy solution is, naturally, to disable support for this partition table by disabling CONFIG_ACORN_PARTITION_CUMANA. I wonder if there are any known cases of people using disks with this partition table with our kernels. Can there be any other negative consequences? Bug#341596: [PATCH] loadkeys -m shouldn't need console.
This bug really started to annoy me when I couldn't cross-compile ARM kernels as a batch job... The problem is the unicode patch, 430_read_keymaps_fmt.patch which unconditionally tries to work out if the current console is in unicode mode. Re: Wanted: Debian Installer PowerPC porter(s)
hi - i am getting pretty worn out myself putting Debian on a new world mac for first time lately, a G4. i have thinking now it it is a hassle. i think the installer is over automated and that increase bug problems. for instance. a) the partitioning scheme and type i was given were not much at all to my liking or need. i was not given any option to correct this only take it or leave it. i was not told that journaling was being turned on. since the partition sizes i was given were not suitable i am force to resize later. my backup drive here is firewire and i am hearing it won't boot a backup. (the backup i made on scsi with the old world machine wouldn't boot either, but i was able to run parted by interrupting the installer - although it no longer tells you you can i guess you can ... ) on more general : i for one am no windows guy. I trained on unix back in the old days and now i am 50% mac at least. i like macs, and i like unix. i can't stand windows. i really can't. is this worth it. i have done some work with Fink project/ macosx.2 jaguar. obviously it it non-free. i don't like that but i need to do some pre-production sorts of work. by the way fink commander is compared to synaptic much better ! ?suggestions ?? --- Sven Luther [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Wed, Mar 29, 2006 at 03:10:34AM +0200, Frans Pop wrote: On Wednesday 29 March 2006 03:00, Sven Luther wrote: altough seeing as it is a tedious process with little respect from the d-i team ...
