Bug#603111: installation-report: dhcp3-client installed on kfreebsd-*

2010-11-10 Thread Christian PERRIER
reassign 603111 isc-dhcp
thanks

I somehow suspect that this is a glitch in new installs of the
isc-dhcp-client package. Reassigning to isc-dhcp a little bit blindly,
I admit..:-)

Thanks for your update.

The above is missing "charset=UTF-8" which I corrected. See attached file.

Also, 3 strings are left untranslated. Would you mind completing them?

Anyways, I've been trying to switch the system over to lvm on
raid1, but I'm not sure if I'm running into a bug or just missing
some minor detail or otherwise doing something dumb. The problem
is that /scripts/local-top is running and trynig to set up md
before the hard drives are detected and show up in /dev. After a
while it gives up on waiting for the root filesystem and drops to
a shell.

This could be the same problem that I experienced on HPPA driver not so
long ago:

http://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-parisc/msg03061.html

In my case scsi_wait_scan.ko didn't wait for all SCSI disks to be
discovered, debian initramfs moved on prematurely and failed miserably.
Recompiling the kernel without CONFIG_SCSI_SCAN_ASYNC fixed the problem
for me.

Here are the relevant bits of output from the boot process:
[ 58.604298] SCSI subsystem initialized
[ 58.621553] sym0:<1010-66> rev 0x1 at pci 0002:00:02.0 irq 27

[ 58.729629] alim15x3 0001:00:0d.0: IDE controller (0x10b9:0x5229 rev 0xc4)

What SCSI controller / driver have you got? The output looks very
similar to my problematic sym53c8xx. It could be a bug in that driver...

I'm pretty sure that the images are getting built, as, for example,
today's daily contains the binary packages build from version 1.60 of
linux-kernel-di-sparc-2.6, which was uploaded to the archive just
yesterday. It's just that the kernel which gets installed into the
image is old. I don't know how the build works, but it might be that
the kernel which makes it onto the iso is the same one the build
machine is running (or something :-).

Best regards.

I'd be glad to set this up on one of the hppa buildds (peri or
penalosa) if DSA (CC'd) is ok with it. However, the above e-mail
suggests we need to have working LVM snapshots. iirc, we've had
problems with those on hppa in the past. Is that a hard requirement?

LVM is just "the way it is done now" (basically we clone snapshots,
install stuff there, and then toss the chroot at the end). It could be
done different of course.

Fwd: Old kernels used for sparc daily builds

2010-11-10 Thread Gaudenz Steinlin
Hi Geert

You used to build the sparc daily images for d-i. But these images are
no longer built since June. Are you still intending to provide daily
d-i images for sparc or should someone else take over this job?

Gaudenz

Subject: Old kernels used for sparc daily builds

Hello,

It looks like the sparc daily builds [0] are happening in a broken
environment, because the kernel image which gets installed into the
/boot directory of the ISO image dates back to June:

ju...@droopy:~$ grep 'built on' /mnt/iso/boot/debian.txt
This is a Debian installation CDROM, built on 20101110-15:27.
ju...@droopy:~$ strings /mnt/iso/boot/sparc64 | grep 'Linux version'
Linux version 2.6.32-5-sparc64 (Debian 2.6.32-15) (b...@decadent.org.uk) (gcc
version 4.3.5 (Debian 4.3.5-1) ) #1 Tue Jun 1 06:56:43 UTC 2010
ju...@droopy:~$

It would be great to fix it as testing the images with such an old
kernel is meaningless (for example, it hangs on my workstation early
during boot).

Hi,

thanks for your report and your usability analysis for the installation.
Please take a look on the manual, there is a chapter about missing firmware
[1].
Does it answers your notes regarding firmware?

there is #602956 reporting nfs4 doesnt work for mountpoints residing on nfs4.

It seems you forgot that, doing so now.

Bug#603086: console-setup: [l10n] Catalan update

2010-11-10 Thread Jordi Mallach
Package: console-setup
Version: 1.57
Severity: wishlist
Tags: l10n

As requested by Christian Perrier, I'm attaching a Catalan update for the
"extra" strings for console-setup.

We might be updating this bug report with a new version if the Catalan
team finds anything that can be improved in the current translation.

Thanks,
Jordi

pledging for:

ext4 is a sane default and valid choice for linux-2.6 >= 2.6.32
It is the fs that the linux-2.6 team recommends as default
choice for squeeze. ext4 is a safe choice and maintained
upstream in the stable 2.6.32 tree.

I have been told that current dpkg may be a blocker thus
maintainers added to cc.

Bug#603083: reorder fs list on partitioning make ext4 toplist

2010-11-10 Thread maximilian attems
Package: partman-base
Version: 144
Severity: normal

ext4 is currently listed below ext3 and above ext2,
which make it really look inconsistent.

ext4 with linux-2.6 >= 2.6.32 is a safe choice,
so it can be very well be toplisted.

One of the images I pointed you to?

I mean, something downloaded from the following?

If so, then your problem mught more be an hardware problem. Any chance
you can boot from another CD reader? Or boot from a USB stick (see the
installation guide, development version, to see how to create a
bootable USB stick to install Debian)

Old kernels used for sparc daily builds

2010-11-10 Thread Jurij Smakov
Hello,

It looks like the sparc daily builds [0] are happening in a broken
environment, because the kernel image which gets installed into the
/boot directory of the ISO image dates back to June:

ju...@droopy:~$ grep 'built on' /mnt/iso/boot/debian.txt
This is a Debian installation CDROM, built on 20101110-15:27.
ju...@droopy:~$ strings /mnt/iso/boot/sparc64 | grep 'Linux version'
Linux version 2.6.32-5-sparc64 (Debian 2.6.32-15) (b...@decadent.org.uk) (gcc
version 4.3.5 (Debian 4.3.5-1) ) #1 Tue Jun 1 06:56:43 UTC 2010
ju...@droopy:~$

It would be great to fix it as testing the images with such an old
kernel is meaningless (for example, it hangs on my workstation early
during boot).

Correction on Sarge Installer

2010-11-10 Thread Julien Savard
Hi,
I'm looking for something really particular. I'm trying to correct the
debian sarge installation script and maybe adapt it to archive.debian.org as
it's main mirror. It seems when the installation script was created the
developper didn't have in mind that the "mirror tree" would change. You can
enter information of your mirror manually however right after wiping the
disk ( when debotstrap try to get the release.gpg ) it try to get the
file there :

http://archive.debian.org/debian/dists/oldstable

when it should look there

 http://archive.debian.org/debian/dists/woody

I think it's a simple variable or maybe it was staticly coded in the
installer.

I already downloaded the installer via this command :

*svn co svn://svn.debian.org/svn/d-i/branches/d-i/sarge*

And I search for the word "oldstable" in the installer :

* find /root/debian-installer-sarge -exec grep -q "oldstable" '{}' \; -print
>> /root/WhereIsOldStable*
**
But I didn't find anything interesting.

 Does somebody have an idea?

Package: win32-loader
Version: 0.6.3
Severity: normal

On a new laptop on which I never used win32-loader successfully before, I
succeeded to run win32-loader now that it works on Vista 64-bit (thank you),
but it failed once rebooting and trying to launch d-i. After selecting in
Windows' bootloader to run d-i, I get a GRUB 2 menu with no choices. A "first
choice" was selected, but there was no label and I only saw that it was
highlighted. I couldn't boot it.
I can't remember what's supposed to happen after choosing to run d-i, so I
don't know whether I should see choices or whether it's abnormal that I see
GRUB.
I don't know the actual win32-loader version I used, I'm putting 0.6.3 because
that's the current version and I downloaded debian.exe yesterday.
This only happened on 1 machine once. Sorry to have no more clues, I'd be
happy to provide you more information if you need.

Hi Didier,
thanks, I don't know why I didn't get Robert's reply. I didn't use
win32-loader after filing this report. I figure if this bug was so easy to
reproduce and persisted, someone else would have confirmed it. It might have
only happened when GRUB was not installed yet, but GRUB is already installed
on this PC so I can't test that quickly. I may test when I get a new PC,
perhaps in a couple of years :-)

Until then, if nobody else is experiencing, this is likely fixed.

Comments/Problems:

I ran the installation process from a usb stick. GRUB displays fine, I
pick "Default install". After the ramdisk and kernel are loaded, I can
see briefly about half a page of kernel information, but the remainder
of the kernel boot messages are shrunk to a single line. The boot
proceeds to the first install dialog, which is unreadable, see:

http://imgur.com/u5dLql&0aTCB?full

Here are the results of my experimentations on this machine:

- I changed grub's display mode, to see if the use of gfxterm was
the root cause of the problem. Setting "output_terminal text"
  does not solve the problem.
- I installed FreeBSD 8.1 (no problem encountered) to see if
FreeBSD's kernel was unable to use my graphic card properly, but
  the dispaly is fine.
- I tried to install using a serial console, but it failed (I can
get grub's I/O on the serial console, but not the install
  process). Is it feasible?
- I tried to cheat and boot FreeBSD's kernel as it is on my disk
to bypass the kernel used in mini.iso, but I get a kernel panic.

My guess is that kfreebsd's kernel in the install images differs from
upstream in such a way that it no longer supports my graphic card
properly. Graphics are provided by an onboard VIA chip, I'll provide
more information about it later.

Laurent.

Add rootdelay=5 or similar to your kernel command line. This is
documented in the installation guide. Yes, this is a workaround.
Usually the scsi_wait_scan magic in scripts/init-premount/udev is good
enough.

That script explicitly loads all MD modules already.

Unfortunately, that didn't take off.

Well, mdadm does not wait, although it has an incremental mode nowadays.

Bug#603021: installation-reports: UI doesn't update while downloading packages in tasksel

2010-11-10 Thread david
Package: installation-reports
Severity: minor

In tasksel i selected 'Graphical Desktop' and 'Standard Programs' (the
defaults).
After hitting enter, the screen doesn't show the usual "Downloading package x
of xxx".
The packages download fine, but there's no indication that the installer is
working.
This happened with the text installer and also the graphical installer (first i
thought
the installer crashed because there was no feedback downloading ~900mb).

Package: os-prober
Version: 1.35
Severity: important

Hi,
I have a logical volume here that acts as the / filesystem of a kvm virtual
machine running lenny.
When I upgraded my kernel today, I noticed that os-prober (called from
update-grub) does mount this
volume trying to find an OS on it, without caring about the fact that this
volume is already mounted
in the virtual machine. The kernel then complains in dmesg that the filesystem
is not clean/corrupt/etc,
and I guess that under certain circumstances this could cause filesystem
corruption and data loss.

It would be wiser if os-prober could check the flags of the logical volumes
before mounting them.
"lvs" here shows that this volume is open, so this is a hint that you could use
to determine if
the volume should be checked or not.

Regards,
George

Package: os-prober
Version: 1.39
Severity: important

An upgrade (os-prober 1.35 -> 1.39) corrupted 3.3 TB of data on our SAN.

I was upgrading the host space1 and the data corruption occurred on space2. An
install script of os-prober tried mounting as read-only a SAN volume which was
already mounted on space2. That volume (on sapce2) was in production use so
EXT3-fs (on space1) concluded that the journal was inconsistent, re-mounted as
writable and performed a "recovery".

The mount on space2 became unavailable bringing the production host down.
Re-mounting failed. After rebooting space2 fsck was required on the affected
partition. It ran for many hours and found a huge number errors. Probably more
than 10,000 errors. Then I was able to mount the volume and saw that our data
was turned into gray goo: parts of system prel scripts were replaced by binary
chunks, databases and web servers would not start. I had 30 containers in
production. Some actually booted despite major sporadic data corruption in them.

My fellow system administrator from another department on campus said that
their distribution (CentOS) does not run install scripts. As he worded it -
Debian ended-up managing your SAN for you.

The reason why I got os-prober was the change in Debian's policy to install all
recommended packages and os-prober was recommended by Grub. I am not sure why
the data corruption did not happed when I upgraded to Squeeze a month ago
(grub-common 1.96+20080724-16 -> 1.98-1).

I'm attaching the aptitiude log and syslog of space1.

The root of the problem is also described in bug #556739
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=556739). The author predicts
filesystem corruption and data loss back in 2009.

Alex

thanks

Hi Filipus,

you reported this bug (#468668) 2½ years ago and never answered to Robert's
questions.

Is this bug still reproducible for you using actual Squeeze's win32-loader ?
I'm
hereby tagging this bug as unreproducible; tell me if it can be reproduced
nowadays or if I can close it.

(I pushed a "standalone" version there if you want to try from a Windows host:
http://alioth.debian.org/~odyx-guest/win32-loader-standalone.exe )

Thanks in advance, cheers,

OdyX, win32-loader co-maintainer

The MINIX detection criterial is fairly old, no recent MINIX installation can
be detected correctly.
As we are developing some new boot features of MINIX (Multiboot compliant for
example), we are also
trying to make configuring GRUB easier, as a result the detection of os-prober
is patched.

The patch is as below:

Package: win32-loader
Severity: normal

Hi,

I was trying to install Debian from the Windows XP Home operating
system of a Dell Dimension DIMC521 desktop.

CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+ 2.00GHz
Memory: 512MB
Graphic card: on board NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE
Disk: 80GB with WinXP Home preloaded
Installer loader: http://goodbye-microsoft.com/

Problem: Loader ran well in Windows. After rebooting, the entry
labeled "Debian Installer" was shown in the start up menu, which
should be correct. After I selected that entry, a screen appeared
with the following words:

Welcome to GRUB!
hd0,2 [Linux-bzImage, setup=0x1e00, size=0x16f3cf]

And it hung after a few seconds showing a black screen. I could
reboot back to Windows with no problem.

HTH

Regards,

Wei Chen

Hi Wei Chen,

As the bugreport mentions, the bug #468357 you reported was not caused by win32-
loader, but by bad hardware and/or by the kernel failing to properly handle it.

I am hereby closing this bug as solved in the Lenny version of win32-loader.
Please re-open if you think this problem is still alive (and caused by win32-
loader).

Cheers,

Now that squeeze is about to be released (don't take this as a promise, I'm not
the release team!), it would be better if you test the Debian Installer beta1
images for squeeze you'll find at http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer.
