[Debian] Successful installation report: congrats and thanks !
Hi all, I know this might sound as spam, but it ain't ! I would like to send kudos for a new success of Debian I enjoyed yesterday, when I got the duty to save my girlfriend's old laptop from the evils of MS XP. So I first did a backup of her files and then decided to try the latest Debian Live on a USB key: it worked perfectly; although I had to know if her laptop was i386 or amd64: I would have loved a bi-arch live hd image. But it worked ! Hence kudos to debian-l...@l.d.o ! Then, after enjoying that everything was working out-of-the-box (X, wifi, …) I downloaded the debian-installer-launcher, which also worked perfectly (beside one useability bug: #605401). And the installation felt _very_ fast: it took something like 15 minutes to complete the install. Hence kudos to the debian- installer-launcher maintainers ! Then I rebooted and wanted to make sure the box was uptodate, which failed as the /etc/apt/sources.list only contained lines for the CD. Other than that, everything fine. Then, as my girlfriend is an intensive iPod user, I had to make it at least accessible from Debian; but Rythmbox was already there, doing the job: great ! Hence kudos to Rythmbox and libgpod maintainers ! (Please forward to others if needed !) All-in-all, I am very disappointed by such a success: I had almost nothing to fix nor tweak to get Debian on her machine: almost everything went smooth. Keep up the good job ! Cheers, OdyX -- Didier Raboud, proud Debian Maintainer (DM). CH-1020 Renens did...@raboud.com signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.
Re: Squeeze
Thanks for testing, Tom. Now we know that snd-powermac is currently the best choice for a PowerMac G4 (digital audio). Next question is: how to make it load on boot, and not snd-aoa? I installed Squeeze (2010-11-29) on my PowerMac G3 (BW), and the installer forced loading of snd-powermac by adding it to /etc/modules. Could the same be done for G4 DA? So either console-setup-udeb needs to preseed console-data's debconf stuff, or (better) we need to fix console-tools and kbd to not recommend console-data so it's not installed. Or some other solution I can't think of right now. cc:ing the relevant maintainers, and attaching bits of the installer's syslog (starting right after debootstrap). How about: - console-tools recommend console-data | console-setup - acpi-support-base depends console-tools | console-setup One of each, of even both How would that help? console-setup is not yet installed in /target when acpi-support-base gets installed afaict. Or maybe console-setup Provides: console-utilities. That seems wrong. console-setup doesn't provide these utilities, console-tools and kbd do. Warning about the use of ZFS on kfreebsd-i386 (was: Re: r65817 - in trunk/packages/partman/partman-zfs: check.d debian)
Quoting Robert Millan (r...@alioth.debian.org): Author: rmh Date: Tue Nov 30 18:34:05 2010 New Revision: 65817 Log: Add partman-zfs/i386 template to warn users who want to use ZFS on i386. Added: trunk/packages/partman/partman-zfs/check.d/zfs_i386 (contents, props changed) Modified: trunk/packages/partman/partman-zfs/check.d/_numbers trunk/packages/partman/partman-zfs/debian/changelog trunk/packages/partman/partman-zfs/debian/partman-zfs.templates I unmarked this for translation. My opinion, indeed, is that if ZFS is unsafe on kfreebsd-i386, then partman-zfs should no tbe kfreebsd-any but only kfreebsd-amd64 As suggested by Robert, I bring this to -bsd as well. My main point was that adding a new debconf template to a D-I package is, at this moment of the release process, not an option. Particularly if that template is about warning users for potential problems. -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Re: Warning about the use of ZFS on kfreebsd-i386 (was: Re: r65817 - in trunk/packages/partman/partman-zfs: check.d debian)
Christian PERRIER bubu...@debian.org (04/12/2010): I unmarked this for translation. If yes, then either the order of the recommendations in kbd has to be changed, or the d-i software has to detect that console-setup is already installed so there is no need of console-data. In my opinion console-data has the right to ask its own questions and console-setup may not interfere with this. Bug#537502: missing ethernet firmware is forgotten about
With my latest PXE installation testing on a laptop, I ran into a problem I suspect is related to this fix: [ Joey Hess ] * check-missing-firmware: When called from ethdetect, take interfaces up and down each time through the loop. Previously this was only done once, which caused a bug, as the first pass through does not prompt for missing firmware, and on subsequent passes, the firmware was not requested. Closes: #537502 (Thanks, Asbjørn Sloth Tønnesen) When testing PXE on a HP Mini laptop, the PXE installer starts normally, is able to download udebs and continue to the point where partman try to download more packages. At this point 'route' report there is no longer any routes set up, and connections to the mirror fails. I looked in the syslog, and hw-detect was running just before partman started, making me suspect it is the cause of this problem. I have two IDE disks (pata_cmd64x) and one SCSI disk (the one used here) (aic7xxx). This is a known problem with a known solution. Fixed Yaboot, which will be uploaded within next few days, will recognize persistent device naming symlinks and UUID/LABEL syntax. Bug#605938: discover-pkginstall cancels d-i pkgsel progress bar
Package: discover Version: 2.1.2-4 Severity: normal Tag: patch Tag: d-i Since discover-pkginstall uses debconf-apt-progress, it starts up, and then takes down a progress bar. This messes up the main pkgsel progress bar used in d-i, in cases where discover detects it should install something. (This is known to happen in eg, virtualbox-ose.) The attached untested patch adds an environment variable that can be used to avoid it messing with the progress bar. I have made hw-detect (1.83) set the variable when running discover-pkginstall. -- see shy jo diff -ur old/discover-2.1.2/scripts/discover-pkginstall discover-2.1.2/scripts/discover-pkginstall --- old/discover-2.1.2/scripts/discover-pkginstall 2010-12-04 16:03:36.0 -0400 +++ discover-2.1.2/scripts/discover-pkginstall 2010-12-04 16:08:34.050134457 -0400 @@ -171,7 +171,12 @@ if [ $packages ] ; then if [ -x /usr/bin/debconf-apt-progress ] ; then -$nop debconf-apt-progress -- aptitude install -q -y $packages + if [ $DI_PROGRESS_BAR_VISIBLE ]; then + debconf_apt_progress_opts=--no-progress + else + debconf_apt_progress_opts= + fi +$nop debconf-apt-progress $debconf_apt_progress_opts -- aptitude install -q -y $packages else $nop aptitude install -y $packages fi signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#537502: missing ethernet firmware is forgotten about
Petter Reinholdtsen wrote: With my latest PXE installation testing on a laptop, I ran into a problem I suspect is related to this fix: [ Joey Hess ] * check-missing-firmware: When called from ethdetect, take interfaces up and down each time through the loop. Except that code path can only be activated if check-missing-firmware is run with a list of ethernet interfaces to up/down, which hw-detect does not pass. Only ethdetect does. -- see shy jo signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Some bugfixes for LILO to go into Squeeze [new DM]
Hello Release Team, the CTTE disposed some days before, that I am allowed to be the new DM for the package LILO: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=587886#158 Now it would be possible to update the LILO package (based on lilo 22.8-8.3) with some bugfixes to work better within Squeeze. My question: If I create an updated LILO package for testing/squeeze, would the release team accept this new package and let it go into squeeze? I know we are in the deep freeze, but I had no possibility in the last months (see bug link above). On the other hand kbd has only the following recommendation: Recommends: console-data (= 1999.08.29-13) | console-setup Is it this that caused the installation of console-data? If not, then what? I realised the bug is in acpi-support-base: Depends: acpid (= 1.0.4), console-tools | console-utilities No package should do this! Console-tools must be replaced by kbd. (Yes, console-tools depends on console-data). Yeah, I think that's what happens, but it's not enough. acpi-support-base Depends: console-tools | console-utilities console-tools Recommends: console-data, console-common console-common Depends: console-data, kbd kbd Recommends: console-data | console-setup So all of console-common, console-data, kbd, and later console-setup get installed. I think we need to switch acpi-support-base to depend on kbd instead of console-tools, and kbd to prefer console-setup over console-data. Cheers, Julien signature.asc Description: Digital signature
