[Debian] Successful installation report: congrats and thanks !

2010-12-04 Thread Didier 'OdyX' Raboud
Hi all,

I know this might sound as spam, but it ain't ! I would like to send kudos for
a
new success of Debian I enjoyed yesterday, when I got the duty to save my
girlfriend's old laptop from the evils of MS XP.

So I first did a backup of her files and then decided to try the latest Debian
Live on a USB key: it worked perfectly; although I had to know if her laptop
was
i386 or amd64: I would have loved a bi-arch live hd image. But it worked !
Hence
kudos to debian-l...@l.d.o !

Then, after enjoying that everything was working out-of-the-box (X, wifi, …) I
downloaded the debian-installer-launcher, which also worked perfectly (beside
one useability bug: #605401). And the installation felt _very_ fast: it took
something like 15 minutes to complete the install. Hence kudos to the debian-
installer-launcher maintainers !

Then I rebooted and wanted to make sure the box was uptodate, which failed as
the /etc/apt/sources.list only contained lines for the CD. Other than that,
everything fine.

Then, as my girlfriend is an intensive iPod user, I had to make it at least
accessible from Debian; but Rythmbox was already there, doing the job: great !
Hence kudos to Rythmbox and libgpod maintainers ! (Please forward to others if
needed !)

All-in-all, I am very disappointed by such a success: I had almost nothing to
fix nor tweak to get Debian on her machine: almost everything went smooth.

Keep up the good job !

Cheers,

OdyX

Re: Squeeze

2010-12-04 Thread Risto Suominen
Thanks for testing, Tom.

Now we know that snd-powermac is currently the best choice for a
PowerMac G4 (digital audio).

Next question is: how to make it load on boot, and not snd-aoa?

I installed Squeeze (2010-11-29) on my PowerMac G3 (BW), and the
installer forced loading of snd-powermac by adding it to /etc/modules.
Could the same be done for G4 DA?

Risto

Bug#605401: debian-installer-launcher: d-i window does not account for GNOME pannels and window decoration

2010-12-04 Thread Daniel Baumann

reassign 605401 debian-installer
thanks

this is not a bug in the launcher, the launcher just launches d-i. d-i
itself doesn't behave as it should in that use case, thus reassigning to
d-i.

Daniel

acpi-support-base (depends on console-tools, which recommends

console-data's debconf stuff, or (better) we need to fix console-tools

other solution I can't think of right now. cc:ing the relevant
maintainers, and attaching bits of the installer's syslog (starting
right after debootstrap).

Comments/Problems:

boot loader: mkofboot couldn't find /proc/scsi (existing Bug #572869).

After manually editing /etc/yaboot.conf, I was facing another problem
on boot: the disk drives seem to be detected in undefined order, and
this makes it difficult to guess correct /dev/sd letter (and yaboot
doesn't accept LABEL= syntax). I have two IDE disks (pata_cmd64x) and
one SCSI disk (the one used here) (aic7xxx).

Third problem was with X. It was running wild and filling the disk
with its log file. The salvation came with package
firmware-linux-nonfree containing the file r128_cce.bin. Still, I'm
unable to log out and in again, as this makes X hang.

From the different release dates, I'd say that beta1 CDs do not have
this version of os-prober, so that might explain. Can you confirm?

Partially fixed in 1.40:

/dev/sda2:Windows 7 (loader):Windows1:chain

Ok, the problem with sda3 turns out to be the order os-prober
greps for strings.

This patch fixes that, is there a reason it tested for windows 7

It seems that neither order will work 100% reliably; some Windows 7

Bug#605857: clarification

2010-12-04 Thread Joey Hess
This bug is only regarding the following except of the installation
report from which it was cloned:

Also, the syslog has some interesting messages during the grub-pc install:

 version

(I saw no debconf questions from grub at all, IIRC.)

This could be a debconf bug underneath but well, Colin maintains both. ;)

Bug#605128: installation-reports: install from usb key on dell latitude e4200 (squeeze beta1)

2010-12-04 Thread Christian PERRIER
Quoting Julien Cristau (jcris...@debian.org):

 Still seems to happen with
 rsync://cdimage.debian.org::cdimage/.squeeze_beta2/amd64/iso-cd/debian-squeeze-di-beta2-amd64-CD-1.iso
 (sha1sum 98366a49f6d80a10e37e07031e484b0ab0199710) when installing
acpi-support-base (depends on console-tools, which recommends
console-data). So either console-setup-udeb needs to preseed
console-data's debconf stuff, or (better) we need to fix console-tools
and kbd to not recommend console-data so it's not installed. Or some
other solution I can't think of right now. cc:ing the relevant
maintainers, and attaching bits of the installer's syslog (starting
 right after debootstrap).

How about:

- console-tools recommend console-data | console-setup
- acpi-support-base depends console-tools | console-setup

One of each, of even both

Or maybe console-setup Provides: console-utilities.

The latter seems the most logiciel to me.

How would that help? console-setup is not yet installed in /target when

That seems wrong. console-setup doesn't provide these utilities,
console-tools and kbd do.

Comments/Problems:
Installer promped for installation of USB memory stick with the Broadcom
bnx2 firmware set, but wouldn't find the files after I inserted the memory
stick. I had done it this way while trying load Lenny, which worked properly.
(Couldn't use Lenny though, because the PERC H200 isn't supported).

After going to a shell and examining the log, the mount was failing, and
it looked like the mount device for the USB memory was wrong. Was able
to mount manually (mount /dev/sdc1 /media) and verify the USB was readable.
Before trying other options, I rebooted and restarted the
install, this time with the USB stick already inserted. The memory stick
mounted properly this way, and the installation continued normally.

The PERC H200 appears to be functioning correctly.

Installation went fine except for these issues:

* No wireless WPA2 support. I understand this won't be supported until
squeeze+1
* DHCP configuration did not work, I had to supply IP address manually
* My Windows 7 partitions were not available in the grub boot menu, even though
it recognized that win7 was installed. Running 'update-grub' manually resolved
this.

Warning about the use of ZFS on kfreebsd-i386 (was: Re: r65817 - in trunk/packages/partman/partman-zfs: check.d debian)

2010-12-04 Thread Christian PERRIER
 Quoting Robert Millan (r...@alioth.debian.org):
  Author: rmh
  Date: Tue Nov 30 18:34:05 2010
  New Revision: 65817

  Log:
Add partman-zfs/i386 template to warn users who want to use ZFS on i386.

  Added:
 trunk/packages/partman/partman-zfs/check.d/zfs_i386 (contents, props
  changed)
  Modified:
 trunk/packages/partman/partman-zfs/check.d/_numbers
 trunk/packages/partman/partman-zfs/debian/changelog
 trunk/packages/partman/partman-zfs/debian/partman-zfs.templates

 I unmarked this for translation.

My opinion, indeed, is that if ZFS is unsafe on kfreebsd-i386, then
partman-zfs should no tbe kfreebsd-any but only kfreebsd-amd64

As suggested by Robert, I bring this to -bsd as well.

My main point was that adding a new debconf template to a D-I package
is, at this moment of the release process, not an option. Particularly
if that template is about warning users for potential problems.

Comments/Problems:

I used the graphical installer with desktop=xfce on the command line (that is I
selected graphical installer from the cd boot menu and then added desktop=xfce
to the command line by using the tab key to get the default line) and had
success except for two minor issues.
I am using a small RAID1 boot partition (ext3) because GRUB can't boot from the
encrypted root
(on four disks)
The rest of the each disk (almost 500GB) is used for a single RAID5 disk, which
is encrypted and has LVM on top

I did all that manually as I don't think there is an automatic way to do it.

The first issue is that the console-setup(?) asked what do do with the keymap
(keep, set, leave as it, etc) which was confusing since I had set the language
an keyboard earlier
The second issue was that SAMBA requested a WORKGROUP name.

Overall a very smooth install and only a couple of minor tweaks needed, which
I'm sure you were planning on doing anyway (basically the questions that aren't
supposed to be asked during install)

Re: Warning about the use of ZFS on kfreebsd-i386 (was: Re: r65817 - in trunk/packages/partman/partman-zfs: check.d debian)

2010-12-04 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Christian PERRIER bubu...@debian.org (04/12/2010):
  I unmarked this for translation.

My opinion, indeed, is that if ZFS is unsafe on kfreebsd-i386,
then partman-zfs should no tbe kfreebsd-any but only
  kfreebsd-amd64

As suggested by Robert, I bring this to -bsd as well.

My main point was that adding a new debconf template to a D-I
package is, at this moment of the release process, not an
option. Particularly if that template is about warning users for
 potential problems.

Alternative way: keep it available on kfreebsd-i386, but do not make
use/propose it from d-i (for a while)?

(I didn't check how the integration in d-i is done, so I don't know
what it takes to disable it for one architecture, or if that's
required as well if kfreebsd-i386 is dropped from partman-zfs'
architectures.)

Mraw,
KiBi.

2010-12-04 Thread Christian PERRIER
Quoting Cyril Brulebois (k...@debian.org):

Well, if partman-zfs is Arch: kfreebsd-amd64, this is exactly what
will happen. It doesn't prevent using ZFS on kfreebsd-i386 but the
filesystem won't be offered *in D-I* as an option for i386 installs.

Bug#605128: installation-reports: install from usb key on dell latitude e4200 (squeeze beta1)

 - acpi-support-base depends console-tools | console-setup

I suppose it has to be considered a bug for a package to depend on
console-tools and not on kbd.

On the other hand kbd has only the following recommendation:

 Recommends: console-data (= 1999.08.29-13) | console-setup

Is it this that caused the installation of console-data? If not, then
what? If yes, then either the order of the recommendations in kbd has
to be changed, or the d-i software has to detect that console-setup is
already installed so there is no need of console-data.

In my opinion console-data has the right to ask its own questions and
console-setup may not interfere with this. The right solution of the
problem must be to leave console-data uninstalled by default.

I realised the bug is in acpi-support-base:

 Depends: acpid (= 1.0.4), console-tools | console-utilities

No package should do this! Console-tools must be replaced by kbd.
(Yes, console-tools depends on console-data).

Bug#537502: missing ethernet firmware is forgotten about

2010-12-04 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
With my latest PXE installation testing on a laptop, I ran into a
problem I suspect is related to this fix:

   [ Joey Hess ]
   * check-missing-firmware: When called from ethdetect, take interfaces
up and down each time through the loop. Previously this was only done
once, which caused a bug, as the first pass through does not prompt
for missing firmware, and on subsequent passes, the firmware was not
 requested. Closes: #537502
 (Thanks, Asbjørn Sloth Tønnesen)

When testing PXE on a HP Mini laptop, the PXE installer starts
normally, is able to download udebs and continue to the point where
partman try to download more packages. At this point 'route' report
there is no longer any routes set up, and connections to the mirror
fails. I looked in the syslog, and hw-detect was running just before
partman started, making me suspect it is the cause of this problem.

Happy hacking,

Comments/Problems:

1. Kubuntu 10.10 was detected by the installation of Grub, but upon reboot
it turned out that it was not added to grub.conf. Rerunning update-grub
added Kubuntu properly.

2. The disk had already been partitioned. Still the partitioner required
me to go through each partition and confirm it. Only the mount point
is needed.

3. The graphical desktop turned out to be the Gnome desktop. This should
be made apparent in the name.

4. Gnome reported that network (wired, eth0) was not connected. This was
due to the fact that eth0 was unmanaged. Ideally the installer should
configure this as managed, since various networking utilities (e.g.
Pidgin) do not work when networking is not managed.

Bug#605938: discover-pkginstall cancels d-i pkgsel progress bar

2010-12-04 Thread Joey Hess
Package: discover
Version: 2.1.2-4
Severity: normal
Tag: patch
Tag: d-i

Since discover-pkginstall uses debconf-apt-progress, it starts
up, and then takes down a progress bar. This messes up the
main pkgsel progress bar used in d-i, in cases where
discover detects it should install something. (This is known
to happen in eg, virtualbox-ose.)

The attached untested patch adds an environment variable that can be
used to avoid it messing with the progress bar. I have made hw-detect
(1.83) set the variable when running discover-pkginstall.

Bug#537502: missing ethernet firmware is forgotten about

2010-12-04 Thread Joey Hess
Petter Reinholdtsen wrote:

Except that code path can only be activated if check-missing-firmware is
run with a list of ethernet interfaces to up/down, which hw-detect does
not pass. Only ethdetect does.

Comments/Problems:

Description of the install, in prose, and any thoughts, comments
and ideas you had during the initial install.

Another computer was used to install GRUB, linux, and initrd.gz to the 8GB
CF flash card.
The CF card was plugged into an ide connnector on target machine, no cdrom,
no
hardrive. Install was to the 8G CF flash card. The network install proceeded
without incident.

Choose software to install:
web server, Print, server, File server, SSH server, Standard system
utilities

Automatic partitioning was selected. Debian auto sized / , /home, swap
partitions within the
8GB CF flash card. The initial GRUB, linux, initrd.gz for network intall
were sacrificed.
First boot was sucessfull.

Some bugfixes for LILO to go into Squeeze [new DM]

2010-12-04 Thread Joachim Wiedorn
Hello Release Team,

the CTTE disposed some days before, that I am allowed to be the new DM
for the package LILO:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=587886#158

Now it would be possible to update the LILO package (based on lilo
22.8-8.3) with some bugfixes to work better within Squeeze.

My question: If I create an updated LILO package for testing/squeeze,
would the release team accept this new package and let it go into squeeze?

I know we are in the deep freeze, but I had no possibility in the last
months (see bug link above).

Have a nice day,

Joachim (Germany)

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Call for testing Debian Installer 6.0 Beta2 images - soon to release

2010-12-04 Thread Holger Wansing
Hello,

Otavio Salvador ota...@ossystems.com.br wrote:
We've managed to get the images available at
 http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/.squeeze_beta2/ so please take some
time during this weekend and test it.

I tested the lxde-xfce-cd image from the url above and it worked
without problems.
Expecially the already installed Windows XP is now properly
integrated in the grub menu (see #596762 for example).

Bug#605943: delete this duplicate

2010-12-04 Thread Dennis Crunkilton
You should delete this (#605943) because the first line is not
Package: . It slipped through somehow.

This is a duplicate of #605944, which properly has Package: on the first line..

Sorry for the inconvenience,

Dennis

Comments/Problems:

Description of the install, in prose, and any thoughts, comments

I suppose it has to be considered a bug for a package to depend on
  console-tools and not on kbd.

On the other hand kbd has only the following recommendation:

   Recommends: console-data (= 1999.08.29-13) | console-setup

Is it this that caused the installation of console-data? If not, then
  what?

I realised the bug is in acpi-support-base:

  Depends: acpid (= 1.0.4), console-tools | console-utilities

No package should do this! Console-tools must be replaced by kbd.
 (Yes, console-tools depends on console-data).

Yeah, I think that's what happens, but it's not enough.

acpi-support-base Depends: console-tools | console-utilities
console-tools Recommends: console-data, console-common
console-common Depends: console-data, kbd
kbd Recommends: console-data | console-setup

So all of console-common, console-data, kbd, and later console-setup get
installed. I think we need to switch acpi-support-base to depend on kbd
instead of console-tools, and kbd to prefer console-setup over
console-data.

Julien
