Bug#610116: grub incorrectly installed when specifying empty grub-installer/bootdev
Package: installation-reports Severity: important Tags: d-i Hello, While installing Debian using d-i 6.0rc1, on the grub-installer/bootdev, I answered by an empty value. The installation seems to go well but in fact grub was not installed on any disk or partition. And so the reboot failed with a blinking underscore. I solved this issue by booting the CD in recovery mode and running grub- install /dev/sda. This is not an easy fix for a newbie, and I suggest to forbid empty value for this question. Re: suggestion for reliable boot: disk-by-id
Hi, On Saturday, January 15, 2011 12:50:14 am Andre Felipe Machado wrote: Given the recent d-i RC announcemen snippet use of unique filesystem identifiers and labels for more reliable booting. I disagree with using disk-by-id. - It can prevent your system from booting on when you replace your disk controller/mainboard. - Causes problems when converting physical servers to virtual machines. - And is incompatible with the virtual KVM rescue systems dedicated server providers offer to their customers to diagnose boot problems. -- Yours sincerely, Floris Bos -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#610133: Boot parameters (d-i preseeding) not passed to launched installer
Package: debian-installer-launcher Version: 5 Severity: normal I want to do a live install from the media without disrupting my existing network connection in the live system, so I am using preseeding from the boot prompt to attempt to accomplish this. When performed from the launcher, it fails. When performed from one of the Install boot options, it succeeds. I pass netcfg/enable=false as a boot parameter via Live boot target using the i386 iso-hybrid gnome flavour of Squeeze Debian Live rc1 at: http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/squeeze_live_rc1/i386/iso-hybrid/ Then, once I am booted to the live system, the parameter is visible in /proc/cmdline. When I launch the installer, answer the initial dialog, and then open a shell from the installer menu, I can see that /proc/cmdline also contains the parameter here. However, the installer does not skip network configuration. When I compare this with passing netcfg/enable=false via the GUI Install boot option, network configuration is skipped as desired. So it would appear that the launcher is not passing boot parameters to d-i somehow. When I discussed this with Otavio on irc, he was unable to quickly determine the cause, and requested I file this bug. Bug#605401: d-i window does not account for GNOME pannels and window decoration
Package: debian-installer Severity: normal There is a workaround for this (GNOME-specific, but may have counterparts for other flavours). Bring up the GNOME keyboard shortcuts configuration: System - Preferences - Keyboard Shortcuts Scroll down and under Window Management, select Toggle fullscreen mode which is disabled by default. Press F11, which is the usual shortcut. Now start the launcher and press F11. The decorations will be removed and the window will cover the panels, so the disappearing buttons problem is solved. It would be better if d-i run in GTK mode would force fullscreen instead of just assuming it is set. Bug#608201: analysis and patches
The bail out on !iso9660 was added in r60433, Don't try and run apt-cdrom for vfat CD-ROMs. That may have made sense at the time? Now it seems to make more sense to treat those disks the same as hd-media, or possibly isohybrid, are treated. But, while looking at this, bailing out when the filesystem is not iso9660 seems to have other problems too. kFreeBSD calls the filesystem cd9660, and so while I have not been able to check, this seems like it would prevent apt-setup using kFreeBSD CDs too! It seems likely to me that either nobody has tested fullsize kFreeBSD CDs yet, or nobody noticed that d-i ignored the CD after apt-setup, and downloaded everything from the mirror. I've attached two patches. In cdrom-detect, I set cdrom-detect/usb-hdd when a FAT filesystem CD is found. Clearly safe and apparently correct. In apt-setup, the hardcoded iso9660 check is removed, and usb-hdd is treated the same as hd-media and isohybrid. I am not able to test this, but the end result should be the same as the earlier 40cdrom.usb.patch sent to this bug, which has been reported to work on usb-hdd. And my patch should not be able to affect any other image type. -- see shy jo Index: generators/40cdrom === --- generators/40cdrom (revision 66241) +++ generators/40cdrom (working copy) @@ -41,19 +41,19 @@ db_get cdrom-detect/hybrid || true if [ $RET = true ] || [ -d /hd-media ]; then cd_mountable= +else + db-get cdrom-detect/usb-hdd || true + if [ $RET = true ]; then + cd_mountable= + fi fi -fs=iso9660 -if db_get cdrom-detect/cdrom_fs [ $RET ]; then - fs=$RET -fi - -if [ $fs != iso9660 ]; then - exit 0 -fi - remount_cd() { if [ $ROOT ] [ $cd_mountable ]; then + fs=iso9660 + if db_get cdrom-detect/cdrom_fs [ $RET ]; then + fs=$RET + fi db_get cdrom-detect/cdrom_device $logoutput mount -t $fs -o ro,exec $RET /cdrom || true fi Index: debian/cdrom-detect.templates === --- debian/cdrom-detect.templates (revision 66241) +++ debian/cdrom-detect.templates (working copy) @@ -71,6 +71,12 @@ Description: for internal use only Set if the CD appears to be on a USB stick. +Template: cdrom-detect/usb-hdd +Type: boolean +Default: false +Description: for internal use only + Set if the CD appears to be a live USB-HDD image. + Template: cdrom-detect/scanning_progress_title Type: text # :sl1: Index: debian/changelog === --- debian/changelog (revision 66241) +++ debian/changelog (working copy) @@ -1,3 +1,10 @@ +cdrom-detect (1.38) UNRELEASED; urgency=low + + * Set cdrom-detect/usb-hdd when the CD is really a live USB-HDD +filesystem. + + -- Joey Hess jo...@debian.org Sat, 15 Jan 2011 14:32:29 -0400 + cdrom-detect (1.37) unstable; urgency=low [ Colin Watson ] Index: debian/cdrom-detect.postinst === --- debian/cdrom-detect.postinst (revision 66241) +++ debian/cdrom-detect.postinst (working copy) @@ -122,6 +122,7 @@ break 2 fi if try_mount $device $FATFS; then + db_set cdrom-detect/usb-hdd true break 2 fi done signature.asc Description: Digital signature

It attempts to install grub2 on the USB drive -- this can be overridden during the install process by answering no when asked if you want to install to the MBR, and then selecting (hd1) as the device on which to install grub2. Once this is done, you must edit /boot/grub/device.map to remove the USB drive and set the hard drive to (hd0), and then run update-grub. I placed the iso together with wmlinuz and initrdgz from http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dists/squeeze/main/installer-amd64/current/images/hd-media/ in a directory on the existing debian install and added them to grub so that I could boot the installer. I booted the installer without problem. I used guided partitioning of full disk to partition the new SSD. Everything looked good and the install finished aparently without problems. After rebooting I changed BIOS to boot from the new drive. The system would not boot. I rebooted into the old Debian install only to discover that booting from one of the disks in the raid-1 set presented me with the grub setup from the old install, while booting from the other presented me with the grub setup that was supposed to be on the new disk. As a side effect the raid set was out of sync. After booting into the new disk and running grub-install the new system works as expected. Re: suggestion for reliable boot: disk-by-id
Hello, The cited problems could have solutions / workarounds documented. In our data center, the problem nr 1 was not heard of for years. It was alerted at the article [0] that changing hw changes the id. Regarding problem nr. 2, we already decided to not directly convert linux physical machines to vm. Instead, redeploy them from scratch using documentation and internal custom apps repos, eventually updating them. A good oportunity to test docs. Regarding problem nr 3, we decided to use XenServer, that also uses disk by id, afaik. But for who uses kvm it could be an issue. Maybe, a solution for all cases could exist, but until now I guess that disk by id solves more relevant problems at data centers than causing new ones. Is there a complete solution? Is there a way to choose methods at expert mode? Is there at least a way to alert at d-i screens those who stuck at the boot problems? Regards. Re: [RFH] Test of RC1 images prior to announce

This has happened before on and off and AFAIK is simply due to the overall size of the stuff on the CD so I'm not sure what to suggest. debian-sq-di-rc1-i386-amd64-source-DVD-1.iso works fine under Xen. Re: suggestion for reliable boot: disk-by-id
Hi, On Sunday, January 16, 2011 01:24:15 am Andre Felipe Machado wrote: Regarding problem nr 3, we decided to use XenServer, that also uses disk by id, afaik. But for who uses kvm it could be an issue. With virtual KVM rescue systems I mean setups like: Hetzner's vKVM: http://wiki.hetzner.de/index.php/VKVM_en OVH's vKVM: http://www.ovh.co.uk/items/virtual_kvm.xml And our own software: http://www.noc-ps.com/index.php/documentation/virtual_kvm/ In which a regular dedicated server that normally does not use any virtualization, is network booted into a virtual environement temporarily, to repair boot and firewall problems, or manually install an operating system remotely. Works fine with Linux systems that mount by uuid, since that is a file system attribute, and is the same in both the virtual and real environement. Does not work with Linux distro's that use disk-by-id because in the virtual environement the disk-by-id will be /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-0QEMU_QEMU_HARDDISK_scsi0-hd0 instead of the hard disk name/serial that is used in the real enviroment. Bug#610206: partman-auto: please make larger newworld bootblock by default (maybe 5MiB?)
Package: partman-auto Severity: wishlist I recently did an install of the squeeze beta2 d-i on powerpc. partman-auto set up a New World Bootloader partition with something around 800KiB of space. While this is fine for yaboot, grub-ieee1275 seems to prefer a larger partition. If i'm understanding grub-ieee1275 correctly, i think it wants the newworld bootloader partition to be mounted explicitly at /boot/grub, and it seems to want to keep around 2MiB of data in there. I figure a 5MiB newworld bootblock partition wouldn't be unreasonable -- i have never seens a powerpc machine that would fail with such a setup, and 5MiB would easily fit both the yaboot files and the grub files, in case someone wanted to try to transition their machine's bootloader. I'm not advocating d-i switching from yaboot to grub for powerpc right now, but it would be nice to leave the user with space to make such a transition when they're ready. --dkg -- System Information: Debian Release: 6.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: powerpc (ppc) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-powerpc Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-boot-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
