It's probably better like this (and the rc1 netinst works the same),
especially for compatibility with various displays.

It worked for me with the daily from today (didn't check the one from
yesterday), both the text and GTK versions.

The GTK version now starts in a much lower (apparent) resolution, while
previously it was using the full native resolution of the display (a
Full HD TV).

Is this intended? Not that I mind, the lower resolution does help with
readability ;)

Arguably that bug should be severity important.

Basically users end up with an unusable 'rescue' boot menu option if
they chose not to set a root password during install.

See #977358 for a thorough explanation and workarounds (one being
editing the kernel command line, which kind of defeats the purpose of
having the menu entry in the first place).

Bug#977358: release-notes: document how to make the rescue mode usable if no
root password is set (buster)

("rescue mode" should probably have been "rescue boot entry", to avoid
confusion with D-Is rescue mode)

The Release Notes editor is asking whether this is still an issue for

It will be a while until I get to check that. If someone can confirm

it's worth restarting all that at this point for these issues.

At the moment I'm inclined to leave this until either Stretch or if
there is some other critical freeze-exception-worthy change to be made.
 Anyone disagree?

My opinion as a translator:

1. the s/removable path/removable media path/ change is certainly worth
at least warning the translators about, otherwise the translations might
say something about a path that is removable.

2. Justin's other tweaks don't change the meaning significantly, you
could apply them and just unfuzzy all translations you already received.

Kind regards,
Andrei

Yes, but if you netinst you can *pick* your desktop, it's not like you
have to pick the default. Do a minimal install, then use tasksel
to select XFCE (or just x + a window manager + the application you
 actually need).

Even the netinst has a default. Besides your method below it's also
possible to change it using the boot menu, which many will miss or be
afraid to try (it's under Advanced options), so will end up with
whatever Debian chooses as default.

So the default matters also for the netinst, unless it's made easier to
change from the installation process itself.

Probably easiest would be to just get rid of Mail server, Web
server, Print server (CUPS will get pulled anyway as dependency of
most if not all major DEs), etc. and instead display a list of Desktop
Environments to choose from.

Kind regards,
Andrei

When you install a fresh Debian Wheezy using xfs as your file system type
you wont be able to boot because fsck.xfs never got installed so when
trying to check xfs file system on first boot the system wont boot.

When booting Debian Wheezy, the last parameters at /etc/fstab for the /
file system are set (by default) to something like 1 1 or 0 1 so it
will try to perform a file system check at boot time using fsck. But,
because fsck.xfs to check xfs file systems is not present (it was never
installed), it will never be able to perform the check and the system wont
boot. If the screen will be black. Pressing esc at boot time you realize
about messages and finally the error.

The solution or workaround until a fsck.xfs is provided at install time
is to boot again with the live usb or cdrom you used to install from, mount
the / partition of the hard disk you recently installed Wheezy and set last
options at /etc/fstab for the / file system to 0 0 The system will boot
normally without performing any check on your / file system.

 After booting you can perform

 # apt-get install xfsprogs

 so fsck.xfs is installed

then vi /etc/fstab and restore 1 1 or 0 1 as your / file system options

and the problem will be workarounded.

I dont know exactly on which packages or where exactly belongs this bug

 I wrote the mini.iso to a usb-stick using unetbootin.

During the partitioning phase of the installation i got the following error:

Error informing the kernel about modifications to partition /dev/sda1

changes you made to /dev/sda1 until you reboot --

There is an option to ignore, but this doesn't alleviate the problem.

As a usb-stick is an increasingly popular installation medium, I would
 categorize this bug as important.

 Work around:

+ Remove the usb-stick with the netinstaller before entering the
 partioning phase of the installation.

 Greetings,

Hi,

Eddy Petrișor for Romanian hasn't been active for quite some time.

Do you have some stats for Romanian handy? If it's just a few strings I
could do it, otherwise I'd rather conserve my energy to keep d-i in
shape and update the Release Notes (when the time will come).

Kind regards,
Andrei
P.S. you might want to CC the relevant -l10n-language as well for such
inquiries, translators are not required to follow -i18n and coordinators
may be MIA.

 bookinfo.po 7t
 preface.po4t
 using-d-i.po 168t53f233u
 welcome.po60t8f4u

That's a bit too much for me at the moment.

If they follow their l10n-language list, I would assume that they also
follow their private mail addresses, right?
Of course, it could be good for finding new translators for the d-i manual.
Therefore, I will resent that mail to the respective l10n lists.

That's what I meant (finding potential new translators).

Kind regards,
Andrei

Strange. Can you provide the URL of image you tested?

The latest one does it as well, also the non-gtk version
http://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/amd64/20110306-00:20/netboot/gtk/mini.iso

FYI, I created the VirtualBox machine with the default for Debian. I get
as far as the boot menu, but if I press enter on 'Install' it just
freezes, but it still reacts to Ctrl+Alt+Del.

$ dpkg -l virtualbox* | grep ^ii

ii virtualbox-ose-dkms 4.0.4-dfsg-1
x86 virtualization solution - kernel module sources for dkms
ii virtualbox-ose-qt 4.0.4-dfsg-1+b1
x86 virtualization solution - Qt based user interface

(this is on amd64)

On the real hardware I don't even get to the boot menu. The laptop is a
HP ElitBook 8540p.

The latest testing business card image worked fine though, but I didn't
get as far as grub because sdhci-pci is still missing.

This is going to be fixed for 6.0.1.

Great :)

ttf-liberation would also be a good choice, but it's already recommended
by openoffice.org. Does it make sense to add it to the task?

Not really. As you mention, it is more the job of big desktop packages
to recommend this or that font.

In language-desktop tasks, we should only need to have at least one
known good font that supports the said language (to avoid depending on
other packages recommends|depdendencies) and ttf-dejavu is fine for this.

Makes sense and that's why I asked first and didn't just file a bug.

  romanian-kde-desktop:

  kde-i18n-ro should now be kde-l10n-ro

Correct. That's true for all kde-i18n packages indeed. I never noticed
 that KDE maintainers changed this.

 I just fixed that.

Thanks for all you work on this Christian :)

Romanian tasks

2010-05-21 Thread Andrei Popescu
[no need to CC me if you you keep debian-l10n-romanian in the loop]

Hello,

I just had a look at the Romanian task and would have some questions and
suggestions.

romanian-desktop:

xfonts-terminus is mentioned twice
ttf-liberation would also be a good choice, but it's already recommended
by openoffice.org. Does it make sense to add it to the task?

romanian-kde-desktop:

kde-i18n-ro should now be kde-l10n-ro

Regards,
Andrei

you have mirage as an alternative, Im the maintainer, if you have
 questions..

interesting

  - pdf viewer: epdfview or maybe even evince-gtk
  - IM client: pidgin
  - openoffice.org - for most uses Abiword + Gnumeric are enough
  - gimp - gpaint
I think keeping gimp is better since gpaint misses a lot of functionalities..

Yes, you can also view images with it, no need for mirage or gpicview ;)

In our POV, the content of the desktop tasks themselves is more up to
 the respective maintenance teams...

I didn't know that...

Good point, but the change need to be made in tasksel, so it's not
irrelevant to discuss that in tasksel lists. But maybe it'd be even
better to discuss that on a bug reported against tasksel? What do you
   think Andrei?

A bug seemed a bit annoying for this, especially since I wasn't sure
about the package.

I belive the right place to discuss it is in xfce mailing list and after
a conclusion has been made, report a bug against tasksel (with a patch
if possible) for us to update it.

Obviously if we think something is wrong we'll ask and discuss it in the
bug report but a lot of noise could be avoided if doing this way. And it
will also speedup things for you all.

Ok, if it's fine with you :)

Andrei, could you please post a summary to pkg-xfce mailing list, with
what you think would be nice to have or nice to not have on the xfce
task? I'll provide my input (maybe in beginning of april because I'm
going to not be around until end of march) and then we'll provide
tasksel a patch with the all the data, when 4.6 have ended in unstable
 etc.

Ok, will repost in pkg-xfce list after I've tested ristretto ;)

Andrei

Suggestions for improving the (Xfce) Desktop install

2009-03-17 Thread Andrei Popescu
[please CC me, I'm not subscribed]

Hello,

I recently installed sid with desktop=xfce and some things I consider
should definitely be there were *completely missing*. Since we are
talking about Xfce all my suggestions will be about lightweight gtk
apps:

- infrastructure: hal (without hal no icon will show up for plugged in
  removable media)
- GUI package manager: synaptic
- image viewer: gpicview
- pdf viewer: epdfview or maybe even evince-gtk
- IM client: pidgin

Some other apps are pulled in via the generic Desktop task (AFAICT from
aptitude), but a bit too heavy for a lightweight desktop:

- openoffice.org - for most uses Abiword + Gnumeric are enough
- gimp - gpaint

Regards,
Andrei
P.S. I guess these suggestions are valid also for LXDE

Isn't it more likely there are issues in your local network setup?

This problem seems unrelated to this bug, but might be due to the
behaviour of the new resolver, sending both A and dns queries
simultaneously, using the same source port, which confuses some routers.
(ubuntu and fedora disabled this, afaik)

Thanks for the tip, will investigate it.

About the segfault, if you want me to test some images (i386 or amd64) I
could do it.

Andrei

Bug#517231: Similar issues with daily-builds from yesterday

2009-03-12 Thread Andrei Popescu
Package: debian-installer
Followup-For: Bug #517231

Hello,

Not 100% sure if this is related, but wget was segfaulting on the
choose-mirror step. I managed to complete the install by providing
the IP of my mirror.

After the install I see another issue:

$ host asus
asus has address 192.168.0.1

$ ping asus
ping: unknown host asus

(asus is my wireless router)

Maybe there are some issues in libresolv.so.2 ?

I used the daily-build from yesterday of the business-card
image and installed sid directly.

Regards,
Andrei
