Additional information to bug #399573.
Knoppix 5 (as reported) detects the sata devices as /dev/hda and /dev/hdc.
By booting the debian installer with
install libata.xxx
(or any other option libata does not understand, I found this by accident)
the ata_piix module does not work (throws errors), and now the kernel
detects the sata devices as /dev/hda and /dev/hdc (as knoppix).
They are working, but slow.
Then I tried ubuntu, and here the sata devices are detected without
problems (but I still don't know why).
