And that's an issue for the regular .debs. That means that the
console-setup deb would have to pre-depend on the deb containing the
translations. (No, we can not just use usual templates, as we want to
be able to shuffle keyboard proposals at will). Or we decide to not
care about having a 1MB console-setup.config (maybe we can manage to
ship it compressed and extract it on the fly)

A Pre-Depends doesn't win you anything there either, since by the time
apt runs dpkg-preconfigure your pre-dependencies aren't unpacked afaik.

troubles install debian on nslu2

2009-05-18 Thread Andrew Nelson
I'm having troubles installing debian on the NSLU2.

I've tried both the automatic and manual instalation methods.

http://www.cyrius.com/debian/nslu2/install.html
http://www.cyrius.com/debian/nslu2/unpack.html

When using the automatic mode I configured dhcp in the web interface
before flashing the NSLU2.

For the automatic mode I wasn't sure when to plug the usb drive in and
should it be formatted. Generally I just tried plugging the usb drive
in after the upslug2 finished. It was probably formatted with 1 FAT
partition.

For the manual mode I formatted the drive as specified and inserted it
right after the upslug2 finished.

I'm using a 1G flash device as the storage medium.

In both cases after flashing and plugin in the usb the leds flash
green for a while (sort of a 1,11,111,,,1,1 pattern) and
finally they stay (2,1,1,1,1) for well over 15 minutes.

2=orange
1=green
0=off

Has anyone else seen similar issues or have any idea how I can fix this?

Thanks,

andy

First tests with console-setup replacing kbd-config

2009-05-18 Thread Christian Perrier
I've finally been able to test D-I with consoel-setup replacing
kbd-config.

That was a crude test:

- build c-s

- put udebs in installer/build/localudebs

- installer/build/pkg-lists/netboot/i386.cfg:
  - comment kbd-config
  - add console-setup-udeb, console-setup-pc-ekmap, console-setup-fonts-udeb

- rebuilt D-I netboot

- boot D-I (expert mode)

- choose French

Then, I was prompted for many keyboard/font related things, in
French. Keymap names *were translated* (at least partly), so Samuel
changes are appareently working as expected.

However, even though nothing apparently failed in c-s, the keymap in
D-I remained unchanged

Then, later trying to come back in Keyboard configuration just did
nothing...

Still, that gives good hope that we can manage to solve these issues
and move on and switch from kbd-config to console-setup. I really
encourage D-I contributors to test all this and report problems...or
send patches..:-)

Bug#528489: tasksel: kde-desktop neeeds adjusting for KDE4

2009-05-18 Thread Christian Perrier
Quoting Ana Guerrero (a...@debian.org):

Will the kde-standard meta package fit that requirement?

Yes, I think it will do. Currently kde-standard is exactly the same than
kde-minimal. The goal in the very close future is that kde-standard become
something between kde-minimal and kde-full; this a similar to what the old
task does, it contains kde-core and some modules. (Actually I think the
current list of key packages is too big, but that does not matter anymore)

.../...

I think that Ana's answer is well suited to answer Frans'
concerns. So, applying the patcjh *and uploading tasksel* would be OK,
IMHO.

Any objections to this ?

(please note that I'm OK to apply the patch but, while I could
certainly upload tasksel as well, I'd prefer the regular maintainers
to do so (looking for the recent past, that would mean Joey or
Otavio).

Problem: Not found last installers initrds and kernels.

2009-05-18 Thread Jon Ander Ortiz
Hi everyone!

I've working on an custom installer. Now, we're using the lenny installer,
but due to some problems, we want to change the d-i to sid or squeed for
uuid supoort.

I got the installer udebs from the daily build (sid), but i don't find the
initrd and kernels for net or cdrom installation (wich are the methods that
we use).

I usually downloaded them from:
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/sid/main/installer-i386/current/, but
there is not updated with the last kernel version (2.6.29), and it fails.

¿Where can i found those components without compile the entire debian
installer?

Thanks:

Bug#528351: similar bug

2009-05-18 Thread Andrew Robert Nicols
I believe this may be the same bug experienced in bug #526525 which I'm
also seeing on a Dell R610.

If this helps, the R610 I'm seeing this on sees it's disk under Lenny
running an i686 kernel, but I'm unable to either change to the amd64 kernel
or complete the amd64 lenny installer as the disks aren't detected.

I'm in the proceess of diagnosing the problem and have five R610s at my
disposal for testing if that's any help.

Are there any particularly useful diagnostics to aid this bug?

Cheers,

Andrew

I think the last of these packages is unnecessary because d-i doesn't
work directly on the linux console. This udeb exists to allow localized
installs without framebuffer (I am not sure when this can be useful).

 - boot D-I (expert mode)

 - choose French

Then, I was prompted for many keyboard/font related things, in
 French.

In expert mode (i.e. low debconf priority) it is normal for
console-setup to ask many such questions.

However, even though nothing apparently failed in c-s, the keymap in
 D-I remained unchanged

Some things to check:

1. Do you have loadkeys and kbd_mode utilities? I think they are from
kbd-udeb.

2. What does output the command setupcon -v

3. Is UTF-8 the value of CHARMAP in /etc/default/console-setup?

BTW, the last commands in the postinst of console-setup are these:

if [ -f /usr/share/console-setup-mini/console-setup.config ]; then
setupcon --force --save
fi

Then, later trying to come back in Keyboard configuration just did
 nothing...

Maybe the questions are not shown because they are marked by Debconf as
'seen'?

Yes, I expected that. In standard mode, only one question was asked
(keyboard layout, just like kbd-config).

Yes, both of them are here

Hmmm, I don't remember how we do this but questions are asked again

The ESSID is the name given to the wireless network you plan to use.

I'm surprised that, with Knoppix, using 802.11b is working. This is
a fairly uncommon name for a wireless network. Knoppix might be using
any found network if the mentioned one is not responding.

As you have apparently a working Knoppix boot, could you try:

iwlist eth1 scan

(replace eth1 by the name of your wireless interface)

It will show you wireless networks in the neighbourhood: pick the
ESSID from yours.

Bug#529307: installation report

2009-05-18 Thread Steven Sciame
Hello,

Thank you for the response.  When using knoppix, I can see several
wireless networks available in the area. I just chose the one that says
wireless (it is the free one in our building)

The reason I used 802.11b as a ESSID is because I read it off the wireless
network card.  (I just took a shot in the dark)

More background info:  I did a HD install of knoppix

When I went to install debian, I could see the lights on my wireless network
card were lit during the Detect Network part, then one of the lights goes out
during the Configure Network part.

Where do I type in the  iwlist eth1 scan  ?

I am a beginner.  I just want a nice stable GUI OS that I can use for basic
home office tasks.

Can Debian give me that?

The ESSID is the name given to the wireless network you plan to use.

I'm surprised that, with Knoppix, using 802.11b is working. This is
a fairly uncommon name for a wireless network. Knoppix might be using
any found network if the mentioned one is not responding.

As you have apparently a working Knoppix boot, could you try:

iwlist eth1 scan

(replace eth1 by the name of your wireless interface)

It will show you wireless networks in the neighbourhood: pick the
ESSID from yours.

Hello,

while trying to get an initial view of migrating KDE4 to testing with
britney, I noticed that our taskel-meta-faux package [1] was rendered
uninstallable because the kde-core metapackage is no longer provided. It
seems the KDE meta-packages have been re-organized for KDE4, and now
kde-full, kde-minimal and kde-standard are provided.

It'd be nice if you could be looking into updating tasksel to these new
metapackages, so that there's a version ready to migrate together with
KDE4.

Thanks,

The package gnome-accessibility provides accessibility features for the
gnome desktop. Consider adding gnome-orca to the tasksel selection for
gnome. This will allow users with some disabilities to more easily start to
use Debian, as it will reduce one step in the installation and configuration
process. This may also lead to the ability to create a Live CD with an
accessible graphical installer.

Hello,

It has been suggested that tasksel could have an accessibility tasks,
which would automatically install e.g. the gnome-orca package and other
accessibility-related packages.

That task could be automatically selected when installation detects a
braille device for instance, hence providing a very smooth installation
experience for blind people.

An administrator who prepares a machine for a disabled person could also
select it by hand.

The question is then: what should be put in such a task? Brltty
Gnome-orca of course comes to mind, what else should be installed?
Speech synthesis, dasher, gok, ...?

Samuel

Hello team,

it would be nice to provide near the other offers inside the tasksel menu an
entry that you may call
Desktop Screen Reader
or
Desktop Assistive Technology
who will mark the gnome-orca to be installed to during the install process.

Since this would be optional, even as mysql or webserver etc are optional
too (not installed / marked by every user) this may not cause dammage to
sighted persons for now, while it may be useful for blind persons to know
that Orca+Espeak is there as well as Gnome itself.

This may also help sighted persons from LUGs, teachers, friends aso who need
to help a sighted person while they don't know what exactly must be added
herefore.

This will also complete a little bit the brltty support who is already
present now on the D-I.

Please do provide this entry if posible.

The Debian Installer of Debian 5.0.0 don't install chinese fonts and
input engine
when people choose Traditional Chinese and Hong Kong as the language and
region (locale zh_HK). This make the installed Debian system fail to display
Chinese but only square symbol.

The installer should install ttf-arphic-uming, scim-tables-zh im-switch or
any packages required in zh_TW in order to provide a function-able zh_HK
environment.

I had tested it with Debian 5.0.0 businesscard i386 installation CD several
times. Choosing taiwan produce correct Chinese environment but choosing
hong kong produce messing environment.

Thanks in adv. :)

Bug#529343: debian-installer: physical volume for encryption: doesnt care if already encrypted and kills data

2009-05-18 Thread Tobias Winter
Package: debian-installer
Version: testing Netinstall CD AMD64 2009-03
Severity: critical
Justification: causes serious data loss

When having to reinstall a system with an encrypted root-partition, the
installer gives no means to
reuse a physical colume for encryption which has already been set up in a
previous install.

The user isn't warned and the data contained in the encrypted volume will be
killed without notice,
even if the same password is supplied.

I suggest to give the user the option of reusing the encrypted device or at
least give a big fat warning
that his data will be killed, if he proceeds one step further.

Bug#529363: grub-installer: make sure grub-pc gets used when ext4 is chosen

2009-05-18 Thread Max Vozeler
tags 529363 - wontfix
thanks

Hi all,

this is a proposed patch to make grub-installer use
grub-pc if bootfstype is ext4.

For grub-of and grub-efi, I assume they can handle
ext4 just as well as grub-pc since they are also
built from grub2?

This change just covers cases in which we would use
GRUB Legacy but found ext4.

Bug#529363: grub-installer: make sure grub-pc gets used when ext4 is chosen

For grub-of and grub-efi, I assume they can handle

 built from grub2?

Yes. But those aren't yet supported by D-I AFAIK.

  There is no such file..:)

:) Ok, this must be caused by your bug #439633. There is no need for
the dot in the following lines of postinst:

 # In d-i the config script is not executed automatically
 if [ -f /usr/share/console-setup-mini/console-setup.config ]; then
 . /usr/share/console-setup-mini/console-setup.config
 fi

 I commited the required change.

Mmm, I guess you missed my mails reporting that some time ago.
Another issue is then that the `which` tool is not available in d-i,
while postinst used to provide it as a function before sourcing
console-setup.config. I've replaced it with `type` to make it work.

Hello. This problem appears to be the result of a bug in QEMU that

target-i386: Fix jmp im on x86_64 when executing 32-bit code

When running grub-install (32-bit) on an x86_64 Linux system in qemu, it
hangs on a pagefault forever, because an integer overflow occurs on the
IP on jmp im. This patch masks overflows for 32 bit IPs on a 64 bit
system, just like it is done for 16 bit IPs already.

Using this patch, x86_64 openSUSE installation works again.

Could this fix be applied for a Lenny update?

Bug#529343: debian-installer: physical volume for encryption: doesnt care if already encrypted and kills data

2009-05-18 Thread Christian Perrier
reassign 529343 partman-crypto
forcemerge 451535 529343
thanks

Quoting Tobias Winter (tob...@linuxdingsda.de):

When having to reinstall a system with an encrypted root-partition, the
 installer gives no means to
reuse a physical colume for encryption which has already been set up in a
 previous install.

Already reported as #451535. given the current lack of manpower
working on partman-crypto, I doubt this is fixed unless someone comes
up with a patch.

Please note that #451535 points to
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/Rescue/Crypto that documents a
method to reuse existing encrypted filesystems. Please also note that
I have absolutely no clue about all this..:)
